Internet News   Internet News : New Amiga web site: AmigaWeb.Net
posted by alef on 27-Sep-2006 22:33:36 (4181 reads)
We are proud to announce first version of a new English web site dedicated to computing and Internet in general, and the Amiga in special.

The website is AmigaWeb.Net

Note: The AmigaWeb.Net website belongs to the community it serves, namely common people like us all, and especially to those having a curiousity towards the Amiga computing platform.

AmigaWeb.Net wants to embrace all hardware and software platforms being able to run AmigaOS and Amiga emulators as well, including:
AmigaOne
Pegasos
AROS
Amiga Forever
WinUAE
AmiKit

...but the web site also wants to target general internet related news, and also have some news about special events / happenings / products that are of common interest for computer interested people.

We also run an IRC channel #AmigaWeb @ EFnet. You are most welcome!

User registration and forum is functionable and it is possible to register at the moment.

Still, progress is done in coding towards the version 1 of the site code, as we still consider the existing code to be in a beta version.

I have the honour of wishing all of my Amiga companions a warm welcome to the new site.

It looks pretty. If it works on Amiga browsers as well as PC browsers it may be a good thing for everybody. I especially liked the fact that there was a picture for every news item.

Thank you for your comments.

Making the site compatible with Amiga browsers are on my todo list.
At the moment I want to make the site as complete and functional as possible, and then I will start working on making it 100% compatible with Amiga browsers.

Since my MicroA1 died I will have to use WinUAE for that until some new hardware turns up (I'm sure it will, eventually)

The site is still beta, and a lot of functionality is still waiting to be implemented. I use all my spare time working on it, so I hope we will see som rapid progress on it the next few weeks.

EDIT: Have made a slight bugfix to get rid of the JavaScript error when displaying the page. More bugfixes will follow later on.

Seems as nice in IB and AWeb. The loading was just "really slow" with a 4MB connection. It might be from my end too but the picture loading crawled.
Should I Thank You for this gratefully if it is'nt just for a few inspired weeks and not the same copies than here or a.org,aw...

Some of the looks are great and offcourse learning to use a new site is sometimes not so fun after You know where everything is but after that all becomes like a habbit.

So Thanks for this and let's see does it overrule aw like aw did to a.org at least;)

I might be forced to use a pc in work tomorr.. sorry today so could check if things look very different.

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

Sorry, seems the connection to the server has gone dead.

We might have to move the site to another ISP if this unstability continues.

I very like the idea behind it... uniting the different flavors. I hope people will understand it is not about trolling or whatever. And keep the people out that have always something to say in other people's topic.

When It's back up, i'll be there.

Seems to be back up now. At least for the time being.

Knock wood.

Being a site admin there, i hate the instability of the server...
Makes me wonder what they're running... (Maybe Windows? )

We're hoping to get this thing fixed ASAP.

Ok, got it now. (day later) I like the Logo/Font and the thumbnails that accompany the news items.

This is good!

I like the idea of a combined newsite for MOS/AROS/OS4/Classic and everything Amiga related. Maybe you could also put reviews up as well!

Good stuff!

I just would like to make a couple of suggestions.

Firstly, the 2 banners at the top are way too big. Take a look at the heights of the banners here at AW and also at Amiga.org. They are much shorter. The AmigaWeb and Norsk Amigaforening banners take up over a third of the height of the content area in a 1024x768 screenmode (yes people still use that). They need to be much smaller so that they don't push the important content off the bottom of the page.

Next up, I can see that you have quite a few features in the menu on the left, many of which haven't been implemented yet. I would be wary about implementing a few of them, for example, the forum, the gallery and the file archive. These areas are already very well catered for on other sites, and would just be duplicating effort. The content section seems to be redundant and would be better served by linking to to the excellent Amiga History Guide.

I think that you may have more success concentrating on one aspect, and making sure you do that very well. In this case, an all-round news site. There is a need for an actively maintained site that gathers the news from all over the place, much like Czech Amiga News did back in the old days. ANN is completely reliant on users posting (and sadly seems to be dying out), while A.org and AW never seem to have complete coverage, they always tend to miss one thing or another. AmigaWeb could fill this gap rather nicely.

One final thing. In the articles themselves more care is needed. Some articles don't cite sources of information, while also not indicating which text is from AmigaWeb, and which is quoted from elsewhere. This can be rather confusing, and is just plain bad practice.

Good work so far. Good luck with the site in the future.

I registered with the name AmigaHeretic, which went fine, got the registration and email and clicked the link. Problem is when I go to Login I can only type 'AmigaHer' and then run out of characters to type. I tried logging in with just the AmigaHer part, but that didn't work.
