Hardware News   Hardware News : EFIKA Available - 199 USD - 160 EUR
posted by ironfist on 4-Nov-2006 9:32:55 (13894 reads)
The EFIKA is available for purchase in the Genesi Online Store.

The price is set to 199 USD. Bill initially told us the price would be 299 USD and slowly go down to the target price of 99 USD.

Maybe we can see that target price alot sooner.

Price is nice. But there is no Amiga (or even Amiga-like ) system to run on it.

Is it just me, or it really there's no mention of what is on the board other than the processor itself? Does it come with memory preinstalled? If yes, how much of it? Does it have a built-in gfx chip? If yes, which one, and with how much memory, if it's not shared with the main memory? Etc...

Efika runs Linux. AROS runs on Linux, hence AROS runs on Efika.

@falemagn

Where do you download Linux for Efika then?

Which distrobutions are supported?

Also, does Efika fit in a Mini-ITX case?

Then with that logic efika also run MacOSX (maconlinux) and AmigaOS3.x (E-uae)

Nice board.
I can think of a few places that I have used embedded Amigas
where this would do nicely..
Just add a flash to IDE drive, a GFX card and a small LCD
display. Very cool.

No idea. I didn't even have an idea of the configuration of the thing, go figure.

Quite odd they don't list anything other than the processor, on the page.

Any idea why they didn't use an on-board GFX-chip? Having a huge XGI-board somewhat thwarts the idea of small dimensions and form factor.
Without an official release of Morphos for Efika, this board -although quite neat- doesn't interest me that much.

hatschi:
I think Genesi wanted to first offer a very cheap development
platform for the MPC5200B CPU. Many embedded uses doesn't
need any graphics adapter and they provide the PCI-AGP-riser
for free if you need a Radeon card. With a Radeon card you are
up to about around 50 mm including the heatsink. If that's too
big, well. Wait for the upgraded (and probably; more expensive)
EFIKA-version with onboard graphics.

The PowerPC industry needs cheap platforms that are possible
to customize for you needs. Not multiple times more costly with
everything possible onboard.

The PCI-ports are available for a reason.

If I were to build 10.000 network appliances, I sure as hell wouldn't
want to pay an extra dime for graphics.

He probably want to point out that running 'something' on top on linux does not make this 'something' a native or native-like system, refer to the first post (logical deduction level from a 8-10-years-old normally developped & educated brain).

By which logic? AROS isn't comparable to E-UAE and only to a little extent to MacOnLinux.

I agree that running something on top of Linux doesn't imply this something is running natively. On the other hand, running something on top of Linux doesn't imply this something is not running natively either.

The first post stated that there's no Amiga-like system running on this board: AROS is an Amiga-like system and does run on this board.

Well, yes, I agree, that does sound like a 8 years old boy reasoning. Is that your age?

Given there's no video on board, I kind of wonder why there's audio instead.

Does anyone know whether the ram is soldered and/or is it expandable? What form factor is that one (mini/micro itx/atx - sorry, I'm not that up-to-date about these things)? Does it allow booting off the net? Any links to a silent and cheap psu for this board?

I'm seriously considering to buy one: the price is low enough to make me put this board in the range of the "fun things to try out". I'm not that worried about the case, a shoes box will do it for the forseable future.

Well, audio is probably just a (relatively cheap) simple AC97 chip. Would you want to see another PCI slot instead?

Edit:
Yep, There is a Sigmatel STAC9766T chip near the audio plugs. It can be seen on this picture.

Well, yes, that was my guess as well. Hence the "kind of wonder".
