Well, I for one am confused. As an Amiga user, I would like to read Amiga news (or at most, "Amigaish" news). I couldn't be less interested in Linux nor Playstation 3. Please stick to what you are doing best, AmigaWorld.net - Amiga news.

Actually I would say this has a lot of potential importance to Amiga users, as this demonstrates that it will be possible to port to PS3 if Amiga Inc/Hyperion so desire.

I am an Amiga user and I am interested in this news, so thank you for sharing!

I am more looking forward to YDL5.0 for the PS3, within a week or so.

Here's a screenshot claimed to be WinXP running emulated on Fedora linux:
http://xs209.xs.to/xs209/06471/xp_ps3.png

I guess it's probably very sluggish. Gentoo should become available as well.

The hardare specs (way more CPU power, more RAM, easily upgradeable internal harddrive) are a huge step foward compared to the IMO not very intersting Linux kit for the PS2, whcih had to be bought seperately.

@Petah

This sort of news article has a lot of relevance on this website as Linux can be ran on AmigaOne machines, the 'Miscellaneous News' category is for these sort of news articles that many Amiga users in general will find interesting, I beleive that many people on this site also have an interest in linux, this news item also demostrates the possiblity to port AmigaOS to PS3.

@ Tomas

Maybe this will be addressed in the future. But you should be able to start Playstation games from within Linux, switch back to the OS and switch between different OSes.

do you know who you are talking about here? this is Sony! has the psp experience shown you nothing?

you will *never* get to use all the fancy features of the ps3 unless you are going to pay for it, and i dont mean a couple million either.

os4/morphos/aros will all be in the same boat. simple functions but with access to all 7 spe's, and those cant be used to the full extent simply by design of those desktop os'.

I agree completely, so if we must have, IMHO irrelevant, news like this posted on the main page, would it not be possible to allow registered users to set which news topics they'd like to ignore, or view?

From what i understand is that this is done by intention from sony side so that people wont be able to run pirated games and so on..

That sounds OK. then I don't want to read news about possible amiga hardware until Amiga Inc says it's licensed and OS4 is running on it.

Well, obviously there is a "Miscellaneous" news category (where news about pretty much everything on this planet could fit in I guess), which opens up for game consoles and Linux news.

But I agree with you regarding the lack of relevance to anything "Amiga" ...

Some people are comparing Amiga with the PS3:

Could the Ps3 become the new Amiga????
http://www.aceshardware.com/forums/read_post.jsp?id=120070500&forumid=1

Some people interested in the PS3 are aware of AmigaOS4 as well:
http://playsquad.commongate.com/post/Install_Other_OS_on_your_PS3

How dare they discuss Amiga on non-Amiga related message boards and websites!

Obviously, PS3 games running on the PS3 can use hardware acceleration through the embedded OS. Other OSes, similar to such games run on top of this host OS as well. I think we shouldn't underestimate what can be done potentially in such regards.

I'm undecided on the PS3 or Xbox 360 but if OS4 could be made to run on the PS3 I know which I would choose.

It would be my first Amiga purchase in nearly 8 years and there is no way I would shell out nearly a grand on any of the Power PC boards that have been mooted.

Heh. Windows running under QEMU, with a 'whopping' what, 180MB of RAM or so (deudcting from base 256MB for host OS/linux).

Gets a 'neat factor' because you can do it, but a 'who cares?' factor because it would be utterly useless to run Windows on PS3 under emu under Linux with the speed as well as memory restrictions. If the PS3 was able to be expanded in RAM, and nvidea were to say, provide binary drivers for gfx, it would be much more appealing as a 'real' desktop system. With the current limits, it's an interesting hacking platform for learning about Cell, or perhaps some kiosk type or STB applications, but not as a 'modern desktop,' let alone to run Windows.

With OS4's lower RAM requirements it could be a good 'easy access hardware' for OS4, and I'm all for that, but let's not make the PS3 out to be something it isn't, even if it now seems you'll be trying to sell PS3s as 'something special.'
