I hope they find a good embedded market that enables them to get the price down. The more Amiga users, the better.

Some photos of someone else's booth at a trade show. One picture showing an LCD monitor with a picture of a SAM board on it and the supplier name missing.

It's hardly impressive, is it ?

Well, if you could do better why not build your own hardware, make all the advertising and go to the trade shows yourself

So it looks like SAM440ep has a logo now. I like the check mark (tick).

YUCK!
Who the hell screwed up the photo of the board that much!
It looks as it has a custom formfactor. :(

The other photos and the cabinet looked OK.

@Legion

Jens Schoenfeld vistited the show and made a report the SAM440 here.

There are a few areas he identifies where the board could be made cheaper and he suggests a few possible applications for the FPGA and its I/O connector.

Yeah, the tick is nice. It reminds of the old amiga tick, and it's modern without looking like corporate kitsch. I definitely wouldn't mind having to look at that on a computer's case - it looks better to me than the boing ball.

@Codesmith

Fully agree. I'm not a fan of boing-ball logos either, the old Amiga tick has much more style. I basically got really sick of boing-balls because of the "Amiga"-named companies that kept using it after Commodore went bancrupt.

True. A rolling stone may not pick up any moss, but a boing ball sure can pick up lots of crap!

The Sam440ep looks nice, but I would like to see some pictures of it actually working.
I'm also concerned about the available CPU power and lack of l2 cache.

Can the Sam440ep run games like Quake? If so, how fast is it (using the software renderer)?

Kind regards,

Dennis

@Rob

Thanks for the link Rob, interesting stuff. I still like the fact that the CPU only uses 3 Watts, i mean 3! Watts - thats pretty cool. Considering the original Pentium running at 75Mhz used up 6... and it's only gone up since.

is this board going to be around the $500 mark (US$) ? The specs look good..just hope its available for the regular user at a cheaper rate.

@Dennis

The Efika runs Wipeout 2097 and Tuxracer well enough and the MPC5200B it uses has no L2 cache either.

Well everyone *hopes* for a cheaper version. It would be nice if they would consider a "stripped-down version", e.g. without FPGA and some other stuff. Although, one of the main reasons for the price might be the fact that it's a 10-layer board.
I am still hoping for an entry-level board (from a price-point) that runs OS4.

According to Jens Scoenfeld's report it will be targetted in the 500 to 700 EUR area, that is about $668-$934 USD at current exchange rates, presumably before OS4.

It looks promising, but price and more so time seems to be an issue to me. If it's not being demonstrated booting Linux yet, how close could it be?

Same thing I was thinking. I really dislike the boing ball as an Amiga logo.

Wow, this sounds just like the µA1. It was originally announced at $500 USD and then before you knew it dealers were charging almost $1000USD for it. If the SAM goes that high, I'm deleting my account and forgetting Amiga for good. That's just ridiculous.
