   posted by Bean on 14-Dec-2006 7:36:15 (2964 reads)
Posted on behalf of Curty by Bean

Whilst Bean has been working hard on TuneNet, I have been working
hard adding support for more formats.

I have recently uploaded 5 new and 2 optimised plugins for TuneNet to
os4depot.net.

Updates:
AAC Plugin - Improved playback directly from IPod, faster detection, bux
fixes.
FLAC Plugin - Optimised, faster detection, bug fixes.

The New ones:
Sid Plugin - Plays C64 songs
YM Plugin - Plays Atari ST YM songs
VTX Plugin - Plays Spectrum ay/ym VTX files
HVL Plugin - Plays the newly released HivelyTracker songs
GME Plugin - Adds support for AY(Sinclair Spectrum),GBS(Gameboy),
GYM(Sega Megadrive/Genesis), HES(PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16),
KSS(MSX Home Computer), NSF(Nintendo 8-bit/Famicom),
NSFE(like NSF but supports track names and times), SAP(Atari XL),
SMS(Sega Master System), SPC(Super Nintendo), VGM(BBC Micro, Colecovision,
Sega 32X, Sega Game Gear, Sega Master System, Sega Mega CD , Sega
Megadrive, Sega SG-1000) and VGZ (Zip support for vgm files). Phew!!!

Thanks to SpotUP for all his hard work and supplying the libs (especially
libGME) that made most of these possible, also to Bean for the superb
TuneNet and for all his help and patience!!

Grab these plugins and the latest TuneNet here and enjoy all these
new formats.

Wow! Thanks for that, I'll be sure to check them out when I get back from work.

I'm amazed how TuneNet has evolved from a fairly simple music player with a few nifty features, into an awesome fully-functional music player. Please keep up the good work, guys, and many thanks for your efforts thus far!

Sid Plugin - Plays C64 songs

Does this use execve() interface or is GPL'd code incorporated into plugin?

@itix,

Curty should be back this evening so can answer himself, but before any license type discussions start up it is released under the GPL license (see OS4 depot license type). I'm sure Curty will meet the requirements and distribute the source code.

Cheers,
Bean.

Source code is not problem, I already implemented my own GPL clean (Execute() + PIPE) SID player for ANR. But binary distribution of this SID plugin might be against GPL. I don't really care, it is just against good coding practises.

By using a PIPE you are effectively achieving the same goal as a plugin with integrated GPL code, the only difference is that you have gone to lengths to comply with GPL without having to release the source for the plugin part (though even this is a grey area). There are many Sid plugins available for different systems (WinAmp, XMMS etc...) which are based on the SidPlay code base which have a source and binary distribution. See here. I'm pretty sure Curty is ok releasing a binary distribution as well as the source.

I'd really like to stear this conversation away from this news item. How about a good discussion on IRC in the AW developer forums? ..or as a seperate Topic in one of the forums here?

Cheers,
Bean.

@Tomppeli

On Aminet soonish... but it'll probably play at the wrong speed. Be grateful if you could give it a whirl though and see if there are any other problems - it's just a quickly knocked-up "proof of concept" so don't expect great things.

The next release might actually be useful though.

Oh, and you'll need a WAV datatype

@Curty

Good work!

Chris
