Software News   Software News : IT'S DONE!
posted by Rogue on 24-Dec-2006 15:59:13 (138051 reads)
Leuven, Belgium, 24 December 2006.

Hyperion-entertainment is very pleased to announce the immediate availability (for registered AmigaOne customers) of Amiga OS 4.0, The Final Update.

Originally released in May of 2004, Amiga OS 4.0 (www.amigaos4.com) is the most stable, modern and feature-rich incarnation to date of the multi-media centric operating system launched by Commodore Business Machines (CBM) in 1985 with which it still retains a high degree of compatibility.

Amiga OS 4.0, The Final Update is the culmination of 5 years of development and takes the form of a stand-alone ISO image which contains a full installation of all Amiga OS 4.0 components.

A list of new features can be found here .

Availability of PowerPC hardware suitable for operation with Amiga OS 4.0 will be announced by third parties early 2007.

The Hyperion Entertainment management would like to take this opportunity to wish all our customers and supporters a pleasant holiday season!

to qoute Rogue from another thread here on AW:

About AmigaInput, unfortunately a stable version didn't make it in time anymore; we could have put the old version on it, but felt it would be better to leave it out. It will make its return in the first patch/boingbag/whatever.

@falemagn

It's extremely logical really.

The OS4 developers needed to decide when OS4 should be classified as being "final". This fact, does not of course mean that there will be no further updates to fix problems etc. Simple huh?

Well I to thinks falemagn has a point.

This is the final update and called OS4.0 Final, and yet more will come in a later update/boingbag. Wouldnt it be a better choise to call Final ? as it will have things you wanted to have in OS4 final but didnt get into this update ?

That's not at all my point. I can't find any better words to express my questions than the ones I already used, therefore I cannot but point you to my original post.

Did they? To me this looks more and more like a words game... They said that AmigaOS4 was released in 2004, since then there have been 4 updates plus this "last" one. They could have chosen to name AmigaOS4.0 the first release and then 4.0.1, 4.0.2, 4.0.3, 4.0.4 and 4.0.5 the subsequent updates, like it's always been with AmigaOS in the past (remember 2.0.x?). What's more, I gather from other threads that this release still has known problems and bugs, so calling it final is as arbitrary, it seems, as calling it update5.

What makes me rather curious, though, is why if AmigaOS4 was "released" in 2004 the subsequent updates, including the first one, were labeled as "prerelease".

Perhaps most of you are too excited to care about these things, but they are way more interesting to me than the release itself.

Perhaps, and you're still boring as usual. Would you move to PM's if you really can't help going off topic? Thanks.

@falemagn

What final versions of OS's or softwares don't have bugs though?

As you know, there will always be problems remaining.

damn man, i think you are right. And being myself one of trolls, i give you my full support

ok, joking, but really; is there a difference between Final update and yet-another-update?
When it comes to h/w, will there be more than one manufactor? I hope so, signle company would rip us off by overblowing their prices (remember the prices between A1 and Peg1/2)?

I asked whether this was indeed an "official release" and Rogue said that AmigaOS4 was released in 2004, implying that this is no more of a "release" than the one in 2004 is.

I can't help but think of the words "contract" and "buyout" here, but I'll let the crowd do the brainstorming and speculations.

Even if it's in fact an update to the previous version, it is still a very important step in the AmigaOS timeline.

Sure, I don't negate that.

Quote:

Think of it in terms of "complete", while the previous version were "not complete". Hence all the cheers and excitement.

By reading other threads it appears that this version is still lacking things that were planned for it, therefore it doesn't look complete, in the truest sense of the word.

Someone dared to call this "update 5" to which Rogue felt compelled to reply that no, this is not update 5 (although it's the 5th update in a row...), it's AmigaOS4.0. So what were the previous ones?

Am I the only one who feels confused at all this throwing around of names and numbers?

Nope, now i am confused also. In order to avoid confusion, my suggestion it to let hyperion give both of us new, unused A1 machines, to put away all these confusion and stop trolls like me

After reading around this and other forums i have to confess I am abit confused.

If Hyperion doesn`t feel they have met their final feature goal for 4.0 then can this realy be THE final version ? wouldn´t the next update/boingbag be the final version ?

Anyhow it´s just pOtato or potAto. Same thing only diffrent callings.

I read it as a "release of a preliminary version"; the first prerelease version and the final are both releases, but of a different "version" of OS4.

If so, only time will tell.

It is natural, there will never be any perfect release of any OS with the 100% of all the planned features, there will always be something that didn't made it to the released version, or bugs that were not found before. But a line has to be drawn, and a version must be released (=this is how Hyperion have decided, and I agree to it) regardless if it's perfect or not.

Previews, betas, incomplete versions of AmigaOS 4.

I don't know, I can say for myself that I don't give much attention to this detail, it's what has been released that is much more interesting :)

er... yeah. right.
Huh?

We might have called it after Blibdulpulp the God of the Sahuagin, that would not have made a difference. Of course more updates and patches will come. Did Commodore stop with 1.0? I don't think so.

If you look at the original feature list, a lot of the things in there are not on that. Feature sets change, it was always preliminary. I don't think that the new memory system was on our original feature list either.

We called it Final update, because it is exactly that - the final update to OS 4.0. Everything else will be 4.01 and beyond, and eventually 4.1.

So I am sorry if I fail to see the point.
