Software News   Software News : AmiKit 1.3.0 - Now with PNG, dual PNG and OS4 icon support!
   posted by AmiKit on 21-Feb-2007 15:43:39 (4993 reads)
We are very proud to announce the AmiKit now supports modern icon formats. This is the first time the OS3.x based environment is able to show and use PNG, dual PNG and OS4 icons. Moreover, Directory Opus Magellan II (included in AmiKit) is able to use them too, finally! Look at the screenshots!

This is a significant accomplishment since Magellan users haven't even been able to display PNG icons to this point. All this would not be possible without the magic work of Bernd Roesch and his excellent AfA_OS project. Also big thanks to Ken Lester, a devoted AfA & AmiKit beta tester, who painted dual PNG icons for AmiKit and gave it a more modern look.

NOTE: A separate AfA_OS archive providing the same new features for non AmiKit users will be available on Bernd’s website shortly.

AmiKit is a free compilation of more than 300 of the finest Amiga programs (free/shareware). In short, AmiKit is a way to experience a high-end Classic AmigaOS on your Windows system. Now, thanks to AmiKit Live Update feature, the content is updated automatically!

AmiKit is available as a Windows executable installer and only requires a source of copyright AmigaOS files (eg. AmigaOS3.9 CD) and a kickstart ROM v3.1. The installation process is fully automated. Simply download and install AmiKit 1.2.0 and enjoy the high-end classic Amiga system on your computer. With the Live Update feature you always stay up-to-date.

Now that looks amazing.. impressive work, and should be standard on all classic pre OS4 systems.

Nice. One question though: what's dual PNG? I've never heard of it.

@Hans

They are AROS icons, they can be used on OS4 too...
install the PNG plug-in for OS4, (Do NOT use PowerIcon patch)

Just join tow PNG files to one.

@NutsAboutAmiga

Thanks for the info. I already have the PNG plugin installed, I just had never heard of the dual-png format. When AROS has a good working installer, I might experiment with it a bit more.

Remember to restart the emulation completely. It means to quit WinUAE and start the AmiKit again. This is required to enable the PNG support. Once you shut down the emulation completely and start it again, the AmiKit desktop appears in PNG.

Beautiful work Jan - my hearty congratulations to yourself, Ken and of course Bernd.

I'll have to take a look at the AfA icon.library - I wonder if a full AfA and Zune archive update will be released shortly?

Every so often the thought crosses my mind that I too should put out an AIAB update, but looking at your screenshots, I'm so far behind it's probably not worth the effort! ;(

Keep up the great work chaps,
James

ps. Good job writing the AfA icon.library readme too! ;)

@mbattle:

Please do!

Some of us like the (relative) simplicity of AIAB...

I like AmiKit but I dont have a use for all the softwrare and add ons that slow the system down... for example theres no easy way to change the way that window contents can be shown when dragging... AmiKit allways just feels a little bloated too me... If I could ask for anything I would ask for an AmiKit Lite version! With just the software and a few little add-ons to the system (Perhaps just Scalos and MagicMenu installed for instance)

I really like AmiKit but I often just end up cutting back to a stock Amiga Forever install out of sheer fustration!

Please still keep up the good work though! I have a lot of respect for people that put so much work into projects such as these.

@DBAlex

Thank you for the words of encouragement! ;)

I do not know why AmiKit should feel bloated or sluggish in comparison to AIAB, if indeed this is what you were suggesting. They both use similar visual/system patches, although AmiKit is based on Workbench 3.9 + DOPUS Magellan while AIAB sticks with Workbench 3.0/3.1 and Scalos.

Actually, the current AIAB system that I occasionally tinker around with, has been using AfA + Zune for a while also. The visual eye-candy is lovely, and It does not feel any slower that the older AIAB releases, yet it's possible that other users may notice a little sluggishness.

Cheers,
James

The bootime can in amikt reduce if use happyenv. or envhandler.

I can implement that in AFA OS, but problem is that boot should work without AFA OS so it is easy to test if a program failure is because of AFA OS.

also with new iconlib it is possible to store default Icons in sys:prefs/presets/deficons

This avoid the copy of deficons to ram, and save ram and time, because all in env-archive is copy on OS3.x to ram.

Boot time could probably be lessened by having a version stripped of dopus as thats the slowest component of the whole thing. In fact being a demo version of dopus, it was a pin to install amikitt first time as the registration window pops up and gets overridden by the p96 screen. took a while to work around this i couldnt flip screen (keys wernt recognsed).

Unless the operator has a key, the installer should ask if dopus is to be installed at all .

Do you mean the DOpus reg window was hidden behind the picture? It should not happen as the boot picture software is designed to disappear when DOpus reg window shows up.

yes the workbench opens, its loads all the stuff, you see what i assume is a loading bar in top right but no control over anything. took a little while to work out there was another screen there waiting for input. I had to drop the workbench screen to a native mode to be able to flick to the dopus reg screen . this had to be done by messing with the screen prefs files.

hmmm... no idea what's wrong. Nobody ever reported such a behavior. Like I said, the boot picture is designed to work as described here.

Well i just reinstalled it from scratch and the same effect has occured. there is no boot screen. it loads streight to the desktop, but doesnt get as far as loading icons and no mouse pointer. i know its trapped on the native screen, but theres no way to get to it. keys dont respond so no screen flipping.

An oddity that occured durring install. when it was aksing for the os cd, the screen went blank as though it was continuing to load its stuff in the background. i was able to click out of it to continue install, but it was still odd.

at the end of the install it was aksing for my WinXP drive !! . i deliberatly made sure pc drives were dissabled in winuae and rightfully so as theres no reason the installer should be trying to get to my windows drive. windows is far to delicate to let an emu and even aos loose on it . 1 changed file and its reinstal ! .

Please try to re-install and select different screenmode during the installation process, eg. 800x600 or 1024x768 as there might be an incompatibility problems with other modes on certain systems.

Blank? When it asked for the OS CD or when you inserted the CD? BTW. what is your HW config?

So you changed the default AmiKit/WinUAE configuration before the installation? The installation scripts copies several TrueType fonts from your WinXP:Windows/Fonts/ folder to AmiKit:Fonts/TRUETYPE/ folder as they cannot be the part of AmiKit package itself due to copyright reasons.

Please reply to AmiKit Support Forum so anyone else experiencing similar troubles can find the information quickly. Thanks.
