@ Kicko

Am I confused? I thought AmiKit was a stand alone product.

@Moxee,

I think he means that AmiKit (WinUAE emulation running under Windows) is so good he would use it as his primary "Amiga" if he did not already use OS4.0.

@TrevorDick

I am not a user of emulation. Are you saying that AmiKit is another name for WinUAE? Or that AmiKit needs WinUAE? I thought they were two different emulators, but I have no idea.

I use OS4 on my AmigaOne also.

@Moxee

Amikit is basically a collection of programs, system enhancers, tools etc. that you can use to beef up a standard AmigaOS 3.9 install for use under WinUAE.

So it's basically WinUAE running AmigaOS with a lot of extras (the extras being Amikit). The good thing about Amikit is that it's a nice and easy to install bundle that makes it easier for those unversed in the black arts of Amiga emulation.

How can I update myself without an Internet connection?

I post by the office, but my AmiKit is installed at home, where I've no connection...

Like Trezzer pointed out, AmiKit requires WinUAE to run. Since WinUAE is included in the package (with a permission) AmiKit is a standalone product, actually.

Just make sure you download correct update files. If you have 1.3.0 installed, download the files with 131 and 132 suffix.

@Moxee

As Trezzer pointed out AmiKit is an enhanced Classic Amga WinUAE emulation package running under Windows. IMHO it is the best Classic Amiga windows emulation package available and is far superior to a standard OS3.9 emulation. It has many application programs and utilities bundled with it and has an auto update feature for installation of new updates (which are very frequent ).

It's well worth a look if you have access to a windows PC.

Sorry if I'm little dumb, but The only 1.3 related download I'm able to find is the full update from 1.2.x to 1.3.0. Cant't find any 1.3.1 or 1.3.2 download(s)...

If you have any of the 1.2.x version installed download the cumulative 1.2.x to 1.3.0 update which contains all the 1.2.x Live Update archives.

If you already have the 1.3.0 version installed and you want to download 1.3.1 and 1.3.2 manually, please follow these instructions http://www.amikit.amiga.sk/tips-tricks.htm#livemanual

Great work Jan!

Just curious about this point:

.

What other aspects of the OS will become more responsive other than icon loading?

Cheers,
James

@AmiKit

Thanx a lot!
I did not understand that I had to manually change the version number from the download link.

Now It's OK and I'm done with the download.

PS: Keep up the good work with AmiKit!

Bernd Roesch found out that LimpidClock steals lot of CPU time for its refreshing task. Decreasing the task priority of the program helps a lot. According to Bernd's measurements, it takes 59 seconds to load all the icons in Prefs drawer (when the JIT is turned off, otherwise it's lighting fast, of course). It takes only 38 sec when the priority is decreased to 0, and only 18 sec when it's set to -1! If the icon loading benefits, other programs should benefit too, more or less.

I have been playing around with AmiKit a bit now and I am rather impressed. In fact I am posting this from an AmiKit install right now while listening to some old tunes I found on a cd in AmigaAmp. Everything pretty much just works right out of the box :) I had to change to my actual screenmode post install (1920*1200), but it is still a smoother ride than your usual AmigaOS install (save OS4).

I do find some inclusions odd. Most notably StrICQ and Amster. While they were great apps back in the day, I do not think either one can actually connect to any current servers?

That said there is a LOT of nice software. Some of which I had never bothered to try out before, but I will be giving everything a spin :) One of the demos I had not seen before and was rather blown away by it.

I also found that using OpenGL and fullscreen for native screenmodes provided a much nicer experience, but that is on the WinUAE side of things of course.

I just wish I could find my Magellan CD. I know I have it somewhere, but it was not between my other Amiga cds. :/

I have no machine capable of running E-UAE. But I think everyone familiar with E-UAE should be able to run AmiKit under such an environment. Check the following threads please:

I have an old Sony Pentium 2 that sees very little use. Will it run fine enough on that?

Well, it will run (providing you have WinXP installed). Whether it will run fine, that's a question...

Hi @ Nickolas
I play with AmiKit in OS4. E-uae doesn't work like WinUAE.
1. Euae doesn't use JIT, so AmiKit won't work 'out-of-the-box'. So,
this means that icon drawing is the first problem of speed in NON-JIT
Euae.
2. OS4 working Philosophy: don't emulate; get real! I use IBrowse or AWeb
in OS4 not the emulation in AmiKit. Come on, the PC emulates the Amiga,
Amiga doesn't emulate itself--- it's all ready real!!!!
3. I found that the origninal EyeTech Workbench on the A1 linux CD is fastest
and best OS3.1 emulator. Amos stuff runs fantastic in this system.

Yes, XP is installed on it.

Hahaha, so it may be a little slow, eh? This machine is over the hump at the house where I grew up. I was hoping to use AmiKit there while on Holidays this summer.

I am retiring in September this year and moving back there. I will take all my Amiga computers with me including a Compaq Pentium 3. When I get all these computers in one location I would be able to use the Pentium 3 for AmiKit. I suppose the Pentium 3 will run AmiKit "fine".
