Announcement   Announcement : So Long Fred, and thanks for all the Fish disks!
   posted by T_Bone on 28-Apr-2007 2:20:57 (6359 reads)
Last friday, Fred Fish died in his home on April 20, 2007 at the age of 54.

He began offering Fish disks by mail order from his home in 1986 at a time years before we had Aminet or internet access, and BBS's mostly ran from floppy drives. What he started evolved into probably the biggest sneakernet distribution system ever. User group meetings at the time flourished largely due to the fact that they offered Fish disks for their users to copy. He initiated Geek Gadgets as well, a Unix environment for AmigaOS and BeOS. He's done extensive work on GDB and binutils. He worked briefly at Be Inc, makers of BeOS, and Cygnus, makers of Cygwin.

His contributions to free software in general, and especialy the Amiga have shaped most of our experiences with the platform, and have earned him a place among the platform's pioneers.

So long Fred, and thanks for all the Fish disks!

The Amiga will outlive us all.

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

Condolences to his family, may he rest in peace.

Those that remember Fred & what he did for us in the early Amiga days are showing our age here. Fred pioneered the concept that is now Aminet, a shame it can't be changed to FredNet to honor him.

It's sad to see yet another guiding light of the community that built the spirit that was, is and will be "Amiga" has left us. I can still remember the first Fish Disk I ever got. I can't remember what was on it (other than a cute Workbench hack called DK) but I do remember how thrilled I was to get legal software for $3.00 per disk to copy at my local Commodore retailer.

Rest in piece Fred, you were Aminet to me before they built it. Respect.

Doug

You need another one to play when the computer is actually ready to use.
Maybe add more for malfunctions and then we'll have music all day.

RIP Fred, I had some of your disks and wish I had known you personally as they were a great source.
Judging by the responses I have seen to news of your passing, you were a much loved individual, one of the good guys.

A shame to loose another legendary Amigan.

My kids got Fish disks with games at the AUGKC meetings. I bought utilities and such.

And later FF pioneered CD distribution of free software...

Thanks for the memories, Fred. And the leg up into better computing.

Best wishes for his family and friends.

Such sad sad news.

When there was no Internet, there was Fred.

The man who pioneered, may his legacy live on....and on.
