hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : AROS drops Amiga from its name!
   posted by Raffaele on 5-May-2007 15:11:51 (7174 reads)
Due to the recent legal turmoil between Amiga Inc. and Hyperion, the Amiga reference is going to be removed from the AROS' name.

Its new name is now "AROS Research OS", making it part of the long list of projects that, like GNU, have recursive acronyms as names.

The news was taken from Amiganews.de and originated from the AROS mailing list.

Quote:

AROS: Renaming project
According to Aaron Digulla, initiator of the open source code operating system AROS, the name "Amiga" will be deleted from the project name because of the legal steps of Amiga Inc. against Hyperion.

Because of these reasons the project simply is called "AROS", "AROS Research Operating System" or "AROS Research OS". Of course you can call the project just like you want but in eMails, articles and on websites it should be called "AROS - The AROS Research Operating System"

I understand their reasoning, but isn't this all getting a little stupid?

I agree. This is a little paranoid.

Amiga Inc still hasn't done anything yet but taken Hyperion/Friedens to court. Which is the only activity Amiga Inc mostly does anyway.

No, it should have been done a long time ago. I think this was a smart, calculated move.

Long live AROS Research OS!

@redrumloa

I agree. It's great to go recursive.

Also it's as well to drop Amiga. Everyone in the community knows what AROS is and where it came from. Anyone outside the community didn't have a clue anyway.

Last time I checked, the court papers said Amiga Inc. vs Hyperion VOF, and not the Amiga Inc Vs Core OS4 developers. Let's stick to the facts and stop embellishing bits shall we.

I know it is a recursive acronym, but for the vaste majority of people from worldwide, and barely speaking english, to speak about "recursive acronym" it is too diffcult for them..

But... Hum... Yes... it is better to indicate the things with their proper name. Maybe other readers will improve their english after all...

Wise move, I agree with Redrumloa.

Yes, I agree that it is a wise move to remove "Amiga" from the name, and not at all paranoid. After all, we live in the age of litigation, where you are likely to get sued for anything at all, *especially* in the US where Amiga is based!

This reminds me of a rumour that was going around many years ago when Commodore was in its death throws, that they were not going to allow Amiga magazines to use the word "Amiga" on their cover because it was a trademark violation, and that they were going to sue said magazines! I don't know whether it was true or not, but at those dying days, Commodore was acting so strangely that I wouldn't have been surprised!

@Hitman

This seems as ridiculous as game console manufacturers suing magazines that use the names of the consoles on the cover... if CBM really had made such a move, they had REALLY flipped...

It's hard to sue someone on such a common word. Besides, Amiga would need to explain why didn't they defend their trademark in the past, as they had contacted AROS before...

i would say, let them sue if wanted... AROS is what AROS stands for, Amiga Research Operating System

Can't say I blame AROS for their action. With *miga Inc not doing anything for years,
then deciding to litigate against the only Co. actually doing anything for the *miga by producing OS4.0, I would have done the same thing (CYA).
So now, one of the PCs I own is NOT an *migaOne, running an unofficial *miga OS4.0 operating system. Can *miga Inc. get any more crazy than that? Are they gonna pull an SCO and start suing their customers next? Time will tell.

Amiga has addressed AROS in the past because of AROS CVN access being public. Why haven't they protect their trademark back then?
