Miscellaneous News   Miscellaneous News : DiscreetFX Partners Makes an Urgent Appeal to the Amiga Community
   posted by DiscreetFX on 25-Sep-2007 0:39:19 (134160 reads)
Hello Fellow Amiga users

Like many of you I tuned to this weekends events at the Pianeta Amiga show hoping for good news and the availability of Amiga OS 4.0 hardware. And like many of you I was very disappointed to see that OS 4.0 is still not available and the stalemate continues. This deeply saddens me, in another life I was an Amiga owner and enjoyed it for many years before I became an investment banker and no longer had time for Amiga fun. Today I have no Amiga systems but still have hopes for a new beginning. When the CEO of DiscreetFX came to me in early October 2006 with an idea to raise capital and attempt a buyout of the company I got excited. We hashed out a plan to bring Amiga back on mobile devices. Not the now out of business DE stuff but instead with OS 4.0. Today's smart phones are like the early 1980's battle of different computer platforms fighting to gain market share and user-bases. In the mobile space there is no 90% Microsoft dominance and Amiga could have a chance. The desktop would not be ignored, each would feed the other.

It has been almost a year now and Amiga has not given us a formal response except for an outright insane amount to buy out the company. Since October of 2006 Apple has announced , shipped and sold over 1 million iPhones. Competition is good, choice is good, Amiga OS 4 should also be in that space. But why is it not? Imagine a price for Amiga that is so big you would not believe, then add some and you will know $$$. I worked hard and gathered up a group of investors with DiscreetFX to do an honest and fair buyout of the Amiga brand. Amiga would not be a lost leader to us or a tax write off, we want it to grow. I urge you the Amiga community, the sane ones to contact Amiga Inc. and demand that they sell the company for a fair price and let the Amiga brand return. Amiga OS 4.0 is done, the SAM board is done, please let the madness end.

We don't want Tao Intent, we don't want DE, we don't want Windows CE development in India. We only want what everyone else wants. The return of Amiga! The CEO of DiscreetFX and myself love the Amiga, it changed the entire computer industry. Please help me to help you. Urge Amiga Inc. sell to us for a fair price. We will end the lawsuit, we will end the fighting., we wil end the madness. If we were in charge Amiga OS 4. 0 would be available today on SAM. Software sells hardware but how can software be developed in the current atmosphere. What would a new and upcoming developer use to develop for Amiga OS 4.0? The CEO of DiscreetFX is very busy trying to finish a movie and does not have the heart to write this kind of letter but I do. The Amiga belongs in the hands of those that love it. Members of the community, people that believed in it from the beginning. People that don't own or love sheep.

I have written too much but I hope my message is clear. Help me help you Amiga community. If you need me or have any questions I can be reached on my private gmail account. It is my name @ gmail.com. Thanks for listening.

i agree PulsatingQuasar, Amiga OS 4.0 on Mac Mini PPC would be awesome. Too many broken promises and missed chances under current leadership, that's why DiscreetFX wants a shot!

I would so buy a Mac Mini PPC for that.

... or one of those 800MHz G4 Macs that are said to be left behind by Apple's latest OS upgrade. I bet we'll be seeing quite a few of them in eBay if the rumors are true.

@DiscreetFX... if you're still reading this thread

A thought struck me this evening.....
Freescale (makers of coldfire and 68K) can do custom versions of their CPU's. It could be possible to have a 68K or a much faster coldfire tooled to interface with a minimig. This imaginary device could make an awesome little platform classic Aos clones, Aros and maybe even Mos. I have no idea what freescale charges for such services, and what ever it may be might more than you're willing to invest. But I thought it was worth throwing out there for thought.

About the Amizilla bounty, we are back to the problem of no hardware to new users meaning no new coders meaning blahblahblah

If I had an A1 I will try for sure, I not have the coding skills but that $10000 are so tempting :)

It might be of some help reading the bounty conditions before applying, Amizilla isn't solely for AmigaOS 4...

Pixie's right- there has to be a native version for OS3.x, MorphOS and AROS, to get the bounty- finding devs to do a OS3 version is the problem (which would allow a relatively easy porting to MOS and AROS).

@ fairlanefastback

As Bill says- he's not managing the AmiZilla project- I am. DiscreetFX set up the Bounty and contributed most of the money to it, and then it was up to a dev team to complete it and claim the bounty!

I'm with you on this one. IBook, or MacBook. Preferably supporting a model with a G4 in it.

@ants
So, how is the Amizilla project progressing?

Hans

@Plaz

We could try and contact them to find out. I would like to know what is going on with Clone-A though before I would venture down such a path. One thing that we are doing soon to help the community is donating $1000 towards UAE integration for AROS.

Well we had a guy getting into the guts of getting the NSPR compiling, but he ran into some tricky problems, and haven't heard anything from him a long time. I haven't had any time free to have a go either (although it may be beyond my experience anyway...), so project is on hold for moment. We need to have a least one programmer experienced with OS3.x, to carry on. I may have some time free in a month or so, to put some time into it.

Andrea Palmatè (Afxgroup) is working on an OS4 version, I have attempted to contact him, but no reply, so I assume an OS3 version isn't wanted, as it's a threat (easy port to AROS and MOS)...

So did they raise the required $90 million that Amigainc want?

Sounds like a good plan. I've recently signed up to the AROS dev list and dragged out my ancient 68K reference manuals. I'm gong to see if I can help with kickstart which is probably the first step to UAE.

I work in the chip biz as a chip designer. That's certainly "possible". But it would also be impractically "expensive". Better they spend their $millions elsewhere.

No doubt, but with a bit of luck maybe some one over there has a soft spot for Amiga.

After giving things a bit more thought today, I'm having a change of opinion...... too many hardware projects have either meet with vapor, or disappeard with their technical data and expertise. A1's gone, Cyberstorms gone, Trokia never made it, Ack PPC.....

Some thing like minimig makes more and more sence to me. No single manufacture, no loosing the product when one proprietor decides to close shop, it's open to developers to make different versions and features.....yup, I'm off too read the AROS dev list.
