Very nice !!!

But.... I always wondered what the difference is between a spreadsheet and a database. Anyone willing to explain for me ?

I'm using Turbocalc. Is that a database or a spreadsheet ?

Thanks,

@Metalheart

Turbocalc is a spreadsheet.
spreadsheet are used for calculations, graphs and simple lists.

SQL server is a database.
SQL databases are used for store large amount of data,
whit cross references between tables.

historic archives
costumer databases
product databases
sales order databases

from the data you have collected you generate, reports and logs.

Turbocalc is a spreadsheet.

A database is like an address book, while a spreadsheet is like a ledger.

Also have a look at the wikipedia spreadsheet and database pages.

Ok...

I always thought Turbocalc was a database, and Gnumeric looked the same type so I thought this was also a database.

What is an example of a typical Amiga and Windows database ?

And ofcourse I could have looked for explaination on Wiki but this gives you guys also something to do on your day of

Thanks !

Mart

I installed and ran gnumeric this morning, it works well. Thank you so much for your impressive work, Edgar. You does a professionnal work : complete installer, comprehensive and detailed readme, ...

Metalheart : A database is a software to store data and access it with requests (SQL is the standard language). On Amiga, you can find SQLite.
MySQL, Postgresql, Oracle, ... are other examples of databases.

You can use a spreadsheet to keep a simple database.

Spreadsheets are generally easier for perfoming calculations using formulas. You can then test various hypotetical situations by altering the values of the spreadsheet and seeing what happens in the cells which hold the forumlas.

Databases, on the other had, are good for storing, searching and sorting large amounts of data. While you can perform serched with spreadsheets, a database has far superior abilities. For instance Amazon stores massive amounts of data and provides a search option which queries the database. The user can query the whole store, or just a particular section. On the other side of the website, the owners could run all kinds of different queries on the database to help pick out items for a specific promotion. For instance, if they were running a promotion on the works of Leonard Choen in the 1990s, they could run a query for anything which was created published between 1990 and 2000 with the phrase "Leaonard Choen" in title or author, against their cd, mp3, dvd and book sections.

Databases are the backbone of almost every web site. When I was a spotty teenager I dropped out of college studying IT because all we ever did was databases and I only thought that they were used for storing names and addresses. If only they'd given some examples of WHY databases were so important and WHERE they were used, I'd have probably stayed on!

Great! And yes, it was a lot of work to finish the package

Have you tried the print function? Someone had problems to print (If you don't have a printer, you could print into a file).

@CygnusEd

Great stuff as always :) Although I've been betatesting this so it's not new to me I was really amazed at the number of features this thing has, and it handled all the xls files I had perfectly. All we need now is a rootless X server :P

@Metalheart
Unfortunately people rarely use databases, because they don't understand what they are. But they are VERY useful - you can keep (searchable) lists of:
* your collection of DVDs or books (perhaps storing the author or other information).
* customers (names, addresses, phone numbers, etc).
* customer orders (order number, details, date, etc).
* user names & passwords for web sites you use.
etc.

It does not help that traditional database programs are aimed at businesses, and so tend to be complex & overly technical. But there are some user-friendly databases out there, and the old Psion PDAs came with an awesome database program (called Data).

Man that is awesome! Has anyone tried to run this under MorphOS yet? I have a PegII running MOS 1.4.5 since I can't buy Amiga hardware or OS4.

Somebody please post some screen shots!

Yes, but it does not work. There is a bit hope, that Cygnix will be ported to MorphOS, but I can't promise anything.

Here are some screenshots:

Seems a great porting of a must-have program!

I tried to installl it on my system (I've read the documentation , there is a never-ending list of program versions/dependencies (all I got is the latest X11R6.3-Pre3 , running gimp-2.2.13-alpha with no problems). When it arrives at the 30% of the installation, it pops up the well-known DSI error for the GetSysInfo task .
Am I missing a certain program/utility, or is there a complete .lha including all the necessary file?
