News   News : APC&TCP: Project Guru Book Reprint Discontinued
   posted by AndreasM on 15-May-2008 7:25:42 (13352 reads)
It is already known that we try to reprint the English Amiga Guru Book by Ralph Babel.
Some additions were also planned to the original book.

The German Amiga Guru Book is available for some time now.

Nevertheless some Amiga users needed to put some pirated copies of the book online.

The print material is ready and actually we wanted to give it to the printing press.

But since several weeks there is a torrent with a pirated copy of the English Amiga Guru Book online.

Due to the fact that some Amiga users don't show up any support towards those who keep their platform up and try to supply them with information this project is hereby discontinued.

That's why the Amiga Future project AGG which should be financed through the reprint has also been discontinued.

Original statement by Ralph Babel:

Unfortunately, the release of the 800-page extended edition of the Amiga Guru Book (covering OS 3.x and beyond) scheduled for April was preempted by some fool seeding a scan of the older version into one of those pirate-to-pirate networks, eliminating all hopes of me ever being able to recover the cost of a reprint, so the project had to be stopped immediately to avoid further loss of time and money. Thank you, Keith.

lulu.com - seems a better idea than anything else ! I checked it out ... ! The guys behind the book should really put it out via that service if nothing else ... !

What about just using lulu.com for printing and selling e-books? You'd not incurr in any costs, for the books are printed on demand.

Edit: Oops, didn't notice someone had already suggested it.

But my point was: Even if you do see it as desperate begging, why would you want to sabotage it instead of just looking the other way and letting us soil ourselves, happy in the knowledge that you yourself at least didn't stoop so low?

Well I made my point.

I am cynical about these announcements now.

I guess I will only get excited when I see it for sale at Amigakit or Cafepress.
I hope your efforts are successful.

@Colin_Camper

See the other thread created recently. Turns out that he can't make it perfect (ie offset printed) so he's just not going to do it at all. Honestly, I can't think of anything else he could be doing to further promote the torrent - he's even got me seriously considering it.

Given the supposed high quality of the torrent, a paranoid person could be forgiven for thinking that he's the one who made it available. If he couldn't finish the new book and he couldn't just open source it for whatever reason, it presents a perfect exit strategy: the info in the book is "out there" now so his conscience is clear, and he's got a great excuse for not releasing the new one. It only starts to unravel when dozens of people pledge to buy the book and suggest ways he can still publish without risking a penny, and he starts coming up with bizarre reasons why it's impossible.

Wow! That is truly machiavellian!

Unfortunately I think this occurance will happen more and more frequently as the Amiga Community shrinks ever smaller the egos proportionately get bigger and are more easily able to peturb the whole community.

Big fish in a tiny pool syndrome!

Very sad news indeed.

I was quite looking forward to this book. If circumstances change then you still have a customer here.

Kind regards,

Francis.

It's very unlikely that he made it available because he has the original LaTeX source, but the bittorrent version is a scanned copy, weighing in at about 246 MB (700+ pages scanned at 300 dpi). I looked up the torrent out of curiosity and that's what its content was listed at. So, at least anyone that's downloaded it has it taking up a big hunk of their hard-drive unnecessarily.

Well, I'm number 208 on the petition, and I am willing to preorder a copy, even though I'm not a developer.

edit: You know, I just had an interesting thought: I wonder if some outfit like the makers of the Natami and/or the Minimig, or for that matter AmigaForever, might be willing to subsidize the printing of this book.

@NomadOfNorad

That makes a lot of sense.
