Software News   Software News : St. Nicholas day at Alinea Computer
   posted by Alinea_Simon on 5-Dec-2008 22:16:37 (2893 reads)
Wehrheim, Germany, December 06th, 2008.

We would like to wish all AmigaOS 4 users a very nice St. Nicholas day and we want to treat you this day with the freeware tool called AmiArc. This is a tool for packing and unpacking archives for AmigaOS 4.x. If you have suggestions for improvements then we'll hope that you send us a mail.

In the future we will also support the new AmigaOS 4.1 features. That means that it's possible that we will publish our programs in both an AmigaOS 4.0 and an AmigaOS 4.1 version with new 4.1 features.

Furthermore we will keep in touch with the Amiga community. Because of this, we will visit as many Amiga events as possible. On our event page you can find some impressions of past Amiga events.

We wish all amiga fans a great St. Nicholas day.

Thanks for that nice utility!

A few suggestions:

Add an option to disable showing the confirmation requester after the operation completed.

Add an option to automatically open the destination drawer once an archive has been extracted.

Add input fields for user-defined arguments to the pack/extract commands.
(I tried adding my own args by specifying the path like c:bzip2 -9 and it complained about not finding "bzip -9" and then AmiArc stopped responding.

Don't write to ENVARC: until the first time the user clicks "Save".
(When launching and quitting it tries to write the file AmiArc1.xml)
IMHO programs shouldn't write to SYS: unless the user specifically requested it.

Last, if you see Nick before I do, slap him! (using an english dictionary if possible)

While I appreciate Alinea Computer's 'giving' nature at this time of year, we are celebrating 'CHRISTMAS', i.e. the birth of our Lord and Saviour JESUS!

This is not primarily some sort of excuse for a suitably adorned Coca-Cola mascot to "shake their (my) belly like a bowl full of jelly" (quote: Chandler, Friends Episode 7.10)

See, it's a cross hiding behind the desert Christmas tree on my avatar. It's quite deep really; it depicts how the commercial aspects of Christmas cover up it's true significance! It would be even better shown if incorporated into the original 'Dune 2' animation showing first the cross being vapourised (see the annual 'Winterfest' arguments in the press to take the 'Christ' out of Christmas) and then father Christmas himself (depicted aptly by the Harkonnen trooper ) showing how politically correct politicians are deciding that the very celebration of Christmas itself is insulting to other faiths!!! Food for thought!

@ BigD

Jesus was NOT born on christmas day.
And he did not save us IMO. But thats another discussion.

What we are celebrating with christmas has nothing to do with the christian believe, but all with midwinter, and the winter solstice. Later the church gave this solstice celebration a christian meaning by adding jesus' birth to it.

Much later came the fatguy along with coca cola...

Martin

Let's keep on the topic of the AmiARC.

I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

am going to download this as well. Thank you Alinea!

I do have a question for Alinea on OS 4.1 support. You mentioned that in the future some software many be re-written for 4.1. As a SAM 440 owner, I have specific interests in updates to both your word processor AmigaWriter and text editor CygnusEd. (Think CED is at v 5.0 ?) Is it possible/likely that either of these fine programs may be updated now that more Amiga owners will be out there?

For anyone....in the past I bought AmigaWriter, Final Writer (97?), CygusEd, and Softwood's Final Writer/Copy and still have the disks and serial numbers. (I miss Softwood)

I am about to resume work on a novel. If I wanted to write this on a SAM with OS4.1...what word processor would YOU recommend? Any of what I have (would have to make a CD and install them tho) or something different...and how would I get it?
