Software News   Software News : Origyn for AROS nears completion, gains extra features
posted by Petah on 12-Jan-2009 18:18:30 (5915 reads)
In an update over at RootNode.net, AROS developer Stanisław Szymczyk recently suggested that the bounty for a modern web browswer for the open source AmigaOS-derived operating system nears completion as his ongoing work with the Origyn browser is starting to yield results.

Mr Szymczyk states that apart from several new additions to the AROS software suite - including a brand new build of the popular SDL application platform - Origyn will gain a few extra features, including browser tabs similar to what users of Internet Explorer 7 are used to.

Thanks to its open source nature, Mr Szymczyk's enhancements are expected to be available for backporting to AmigaOS in the near future.

Interested parties may want to know that the AROS browser bounty is still open for donations at Power2People.org. Current funds add up to ¤141 plus $989 USD.

About Origyn
Origyn is a free web browser originally designed for cell phones, set top boxes and other consumer electronic gadgets. It rests on an SDL-implemented version of Apple's WebKit rendering engine. The AmigaOS version is available exclusively for OS 4.0/4.1 and is to this date the only Amiga HTML browser with official support for Cascading Style Sheets. Since the its introduction in December 2007, Origyn for AmigaOS has enjoyed several updates stirring up quite some interest among Amiga users in the process.

Good to hear.

All though I have not yet found a reason to run AROS myself I always watch development with interest as important improvements to AROS have a tendency to find their way into use on 68K Amiga’s.

I have even donated to one or two bounties such as the one for the Poseidon USB Stack port to AROS as I feel they will benefit the whole community not just the AROS user.

When I yet my sam440 I plan to give the AROS port a go as well just for fun but due to its lack of support for running old 68K Amiga applications without UAE I don’t expect it to be as useful to me as OS4 or Linux, but a modern browser port will be one more reason to play with AROS in the future.

This is awesome news. I recently tried the latest VMWAROS distro and updated it to v1.0.1 flawlessly. I was very impressed. It flies even under VMWARE player. This will be a great alternative OS with better hardware support and an office suite. A mature web browser such as OWB makes AROS even more compelling.

There! I fixed all those broken links. I hope they point to where they are suppose to.

Someone speak up if there is still a problem.

First mplayer, now owb for aros! That's really great news! Imo, what Aros needs is a port of openoffice or similar software and uae integration to become a really usable platform. I would be really compelled to build a small, fanless x86 and have it run Aros for my basic needs, it'd be awesome! Sure, better hardware support would be great, but I firmly believe what is needed most at this point is the essentiall everyday software. Keep up the good work!

Fair play, I cannot get excited about AROS myself but it's good news none-the-less.

Excellent news!

But im sorry i just hade to question this: "including browser tabs similar to what users of Internet Explorer 7 are used to." ?!?

Why on earth would one choose to use IE7 as an example for browser tabs ? Maybe on an Windows page but in amiga news. Ibrowse, Opera, Firefox, and so on have had it for years and years before IE got it.

I take issue with this, given NetSurf.

@Chris_Y
I was a bit surprised he said that too. Not sure what he means by "official" support though.

BTW, what is the best place to download the most recent version of NetSurf for OS4? Someone said they got a new version via AmiUpdate, but I don't use that yet.

@ChrisH

This will always be the latest dev version:
http://aminet.net/package/comm/www/netsurf

It's still the same one as from just before Christmas.

Any "proper" release versions may end up elsewhere, the link will be on this page: http://www.netsurf-browser.org/downloads/amiga/

If this port is based on JorgS job, some part of this bounty should go to him.
Well, just a thought.

It has not been a free ride for Stanislaw if you think that. Anyway you are
alot more people that supports JorgS so I'm sure he gets more bounty
money in the end.

Shuure...

It's a well known fact you can just recompile reaction stuff and convert it to MUI automagically. *sigh*.

The only remotely reusable part from OS4 port would probably be the idcmp handling, which is really not rocket science. :)

When this is finished, and I really do hope it is soon, AROS would warrant a partition on my hard drive. OK it is short on an office suite - but Google will suffice on that score (temporarily at least).

This is fanatstic news.

@ elwood:
If he had take on the bounty he would. He had complied with the license as Stanisław surely will and release his source, that's his only dues...

Notice just on how the bounty is for an AROS port of an open source browser...

One could use AROS as an ASUS ExpressGate replacement...
