Software News   Software News : WxWidgets bounty opened.
   posted by Troels on 25-May-2009 19:52:10 (7793 reads)

amigabounty.net announces a bounty to get WxWidgets ported to AmigaOS4.1.

UPDATE - 27.05.2009: Alexandre Balaban has been assigned to the bounty and deadline has been changed as agreed with Alexandre. Please consider making a donation to the bounty if you haven't done so already.

Having WxWidgets available on AmigaOS4.1 will help give us easier access to a huge number of cross-platform applications and it will allow AmigaOS4 developers to reach a wider audience if they develop using WxWidgets. A few examples of applications using WxWidgets include: KiCAD, Audacity, Code::Blocks IDE and (originally from the Amiga) Audio Evolution 5.

I'm pleased to see this project being started! I'll see what I can do for that bounty this week. I'm currently adding/testing MIDI sequencing for Audio Evolution 5 and it would be great to have it on OS4.

the use of ReAction as GUI Toolkit to get a common look and feel.

Wouldn´t be better to use MUI so it could be easy to port to Morphos, AROS and AmigaOS 3.x? And as ReAction has less classes and features than MUI it will be more difficult to port and probably would be needed to write new RA classes to fill the gaps between WxWidgets functions and Amiga RA GUI (this part obviously will be beneficial if complete succesfully)

@Fransexy

Reaction is still the official GUI toolkit for Amiga OS 4. Besides, I think that it would be great if new RA classes were written, and existing classes were improved.

RA is the standard GUI toolkit for OS4 so we had better accept that and start using it finally, hadn't we? Instead of endlessly pointing out how inferior to MUI it is. If there's no use, there's no improvement.

Well, that's true about RA, but...
As the Poseidon USB bounty showed, making bouties cross platform (AOS/MOS/AROS) means more people interested in rising money, more people can profit from the final code, simply said more people care. (And as suggested before, RA is biggest limitation of this bounty)

@DaveAE

Will it be possible to have full MIDI support (and, in some ways, virtual instruments) in an AmigaOS4 DAW?
