Software News   Software News : BOH theme "castle" released
   posted by saimo on 18-Jun-2009 11:41:45 (2461 reads)
Another additional theme for BOH has been released: "castle" turns you into a knight who has to explore the dark recesses of infested castles and, with his magic glove, defeat the dreaded Evil Masters.
Get the theme from the DOWNLOADS page of BOH's website.

Read more...

BOH is an original, retro-flavoured game of exploration and action.
You move in claustrophobic, traps-packed, mind-boggling battlefields
searching for the Evil Masters, who throw countless enemies at you until you
discover and face them in the final battle. Although your quests are made
slightly less hard by the bonuses and power-ups scattered all around,
carrying out the missions demands lots of concentration and quick reflexes.

With BOH the fun never ends: new missions can be added anytime and you can
even create your own! And, as if that was not enough, you can also customize
entirely its audio-visual aspect!

BOH has been created with lots of passion and care to offer, with its old
school style, a fascinatingly different video gaming experience.

Features:
- immediate & addictive game play;
- immersive & thrilling action;
- mind-blowing puzzles;
- 25* challenging missions divided into 5 levels of difficulty;
- multi-phase missions;
- battlefields of any size and shape (also spread over multiple floors);
- AI-driven enemies;
- hand-pixelled 2D graphics;
- real-time lighting;
- atmospheric audio;
- 2* base themes;
- full expandability (themes, missions, translations);
- Deutsch, English, Español, Français and Italiano translations*.

*More translations are already available on the web site.

And I'm not done yet
There's an update3 coming up, and you can already see some of the improvements in the demo (some are not so easy to spot)

Wow, wonderful! That's absolutely very, very welcome!

Some members of our AmigaClub got a taste of the game last Monday at our monthly get together.

One request was this: Is their an "easy" mission where the monsters do not regenerate? One guy was disappointed (as he tried to learn the game in the midst of our eating and drinking) that he would battle the monsters in a dead-end tunnel, finally banish them, turn his back, and more monsters would materialize out of thin air.

I can understand the continual addition of monsters as the missions get harder and harder.

No. But on the DOWNLOADS page of the website there are very easy missions that focus on a particular aspect of the game at a time to gently introduce the game to the player (the same missions are also included in the demo).

Yes, it's meant to be so to pressure the player continuously. In BOH, you can never rest.
SPOILER WARNING!
BOH is not a shoot'em-up. Its focus is not the action. It's the exploration. Killing enemies leads nowhere. Don't waste time with enemies. Avoid them as much as possible. Fight them only when strictly needed. Focus on the map. There's only one enemy to kill, and it's the final boss.

Don't worry, it won't happen. The code has been written to take care of that - I can't say more

I have played again the DEMO of BOH and I have to admit that the game gets better and better with every update. The castle theme is plainly awesome and adds more thrill to the game (I liked the prince hero and the ghost as enemies VERY much!)

So, I will place my order at the begging of the next week!

But still I have to state two suggestions (the latter imho is very important):

a) In the "tougher and tougher" level the enemies not only they are much more but they are difficult to kill. Adding the very-very limited free space you have to move in the rooms makes me very frustated and I got hit by them almost always. So, perhaps it would be better if you keep the pace and quantity of enemies but lower their armor so they get killed with less shots?

b) Please, implement an "AUTOFIRE" mode! So, by pressing continuesly the fire button or pressing the key on the keyboard assigned to fire will cause firing in repeat mode. Or perhaps you could do that in a semi-autofire mode (e.g pressing the button continuesly will autofire for 5 second, then you have to manually fire for the next 3 seconds and the semi-autofire will return). Or implement them as power - ups (e.g autofire power-up).

What do you think of these?

Hmm.. the autofire works! So there is something wrong with my keyboard. Please exclude that from my propositions!

I'm glad you liked it
I personally prefer sci-fi stuff, but that's no excuse for ignoring fantasy lovers
Moreover, I hope that after I release the documentation, others will make more themes - just imagine how cool it would be to have forest, desert, Egypt, "classical" (Greek/Roman), prehistoric, etc. themes!

That's absolutely great

The AI that generates enemies works always in the same way, regardless of the mission.
The problem you have with "tougher and tougher" is that you are not given the most powerful weapon straight away. That's were the real game begins: you have to find the way and collect better pieces of equipment as you progress in the discovery of the map. As said above, BOH is not a blast-everything-that-moves game.
SPOILER WARNING!
Don't waste time with enemies. Focus on understanding the map and finding the boss (that's the only enemy you have to care about). For instance, consider that the first phase of "tougher and tougher" can be completed in some 27 seconds without firing a single shot (I know, I already said this somewhere else, but I can't stress enough that BOH is not about killing) - try it yourself, it works

Quote:

Yes, and it works differently according to the weapon (the more powerful, the less delay between shots - check the user's manual out for details).

Nice work.

Just my 2 cent: if you make the scene more visible, the game will look great!

Ciao

Sorry, but nothing could be wronger
A distinctive and characterizing feature of the game is precisely the view system, which depends on the field of vision and on the lighting (there are various light sources). To learn more about it, please have a look at the user's manual or, at least, play the mission "0. field of vision" included in the demo.
