Hardware News   Hardware News : New Sam440ep-flex at 733 Mhz
   posted by elwood on 24-Jun-2009 21:45:44 (9904 reads)
Bassano del Grappa, 24-Jun-2009

ACube Systems is pleased to announce a new change in its Sam440ep-Flex product line: the new Sam440ep-Flex board running at 733 Mhz that replaces the 800Mhz version (now out of production). This one has a RAM clock running at 147 Mhz, instead of 133 Mhz of the Flex 667.

The suggested price for this Flex 733 is 410 euros (excluding VAT and shipping).

@arnljot

The CPU is slightly slower, but the RAM is slightly faster... and since such board isn't oriented to CPU-intensive tasks anyway, I don't think you've got to worry too much

Maybe the (800Mhz wasnt so reliable? or no more components for overclocking at 800MHz found on market?

However I'm awaiting a sam running at least at 1,2GHz with L2 cache and PCI-e(not for performance but for compatibility) gfx slot...

Is this an admission that the 800MZ board is flawed?? Otherwise, why release a slower version?
How many of us are now left with orphaned hardware only a couple of months (or less) after release? I feel like I've been experimanted on and the experiment failed The Hyperion Quickfix might have fixed the WorkBench graphics corruption but now I have massive graphics corruption in the OS4 splash screen after I boot from the preboot screen (The one that appears if you hold down the Help (Scroll Lock) key during a reboot).

I would not make that assumption.
Granted, Max's posts are sometimes buried in other threads and missed, but...
he -did- state that not enough reliable 667 were available to overclock to 800.
Until he states otherwise, I think we should accept the possibility that he now feels the 667 is safe to operate at 733.

Again, please wait for a personal statement from Max. I sincerely doubt he intends to "orphan" your hardware.

@Xenic:

More likely that the supply of "CPUs that you can overclock to 800 MHz" has dried up. It's unlikely that ACube would have selected the candidates for overclocking themselves (too much work for little return), so they may have bought a batch from somewhere. Now that batch has run out IMO.

@tonyw
What are the odds that anyone will attempt to fix problems on hardware that only a handful of people own? You can apply any reason you want to the decision to switch to a slower CPU but it leaves the few of us who bought the 800MZ version "up a creek without a paddle." Is Hyperion going to buy an 800HZ version, a 733MZ version etc. to test OS 4.1 on? We've already seen that the OS seems to act a little differently on different hardware (A1, µA1, SAMep, SAM Flex, Classic Amiga, Pegasus etc.). It sort of seems like they're building a software tower of Babel to me. I'm just a little more than irritated at this turn of events.

No problems here with the update apart from with compositing turned on.
800MHz SAM Flex 1gig ram.
(And Yes I only have SFS0 partitions).

Don't make up lies people.

Acube already said many weeks ago that most CPUs won't clock to 800 Mhz and that the clocking method had to be changed because of a new alteration in the hardware.

@ Thread::

It is starting to sound like Acube is milking this shet for what its worth?

Why don't they just give us the medium hardware we would like instead?

So the memory is faster and CPU is slower? Hmmm, we're moving up in the world!

I can predict it now, it's going to be another five years before I have an AmigaOne replacemnent. Then it will ten years old, as old as my A1200 was when it was replaced by the A1. Everything is on schedule!
