@authors of Icaros/AROS

It's idiotic people have to download 400 MB file to update a couple of files from 112 to 114 (f.ex.) ! Think about dialup users. You should ask the author of Amikit to help you. Amikit has the best auto-updater tool, which can update automaticly multiple versions (at once).

@Tomppeli

Why do you care? You don't even use Aros.
Btw. How many % use dial-up nowdays ? It's idiotic in 2009 to use dial up.

@Tomppeli

Install IcAROS into a harddisk and autoupdate process with download ~78MB files. I installed IcAROS 1.1.3 on VirtualBox's harddisk and I don't have to download 400MB file.

@Paolo
Thanks for the update.

Sorry but I think it's idiotic to presume that everyone has the money to spend on monthly broadband fees...

@The Daddy

And I think it's idiotic to mock Paolones effort just because of the tiny % that have dial-up and out of that tiny % there's another tiny % that actually cares about Aros. Is Tomppeli "defender of the dialu-up's" or did he just want to say something bad about Icaros.
Cheesus

All I really want to say is "idiotic" is not the word Tomppeli should have used in his post, he revealed his bias right there.

>>And I think it's idiotic to mock Paolones effor

I can't see any mocking...

>>just because of the tiny % that have dial-up

This doesn't mean they need to be forgotten.

>>and out of that tiny % there's another tiny % that actually cares about Aros.

I don't see Tomppeli attacking AROS...

>>Is Tomppeli "defender of the dialu-up's" or did he just want to say something bad about Icaros.

I think you AROS guys are too sensitive.

>>All I really want to say is "idiotic" as not the word Tomppeli should have used in his post, he revealed his bias right there.

I think you read too much into it.

Relax, AROS is good (but OS4.1 is better)

And in what parallel reality have you seen a 400 MB update for Icaros Desktop? The whole distribution is a 1.3 GB DVD (463 Mb compressed), the update CD is only 78 MB big, and includes most AROS system files, plus the updated development chain, plus the new libraries and software. Anyway, any help to keep the update files little, or to add a better update system is always very welcome.

@Manu

First of all) I don't have any bias.

2nd) Even if broadband is granted even in the middle of nowhere in Finland doesn't mean it's that way in all countries around the world. American's saying in this very forum that they live 100 miles away from the Silicon Valley and they can't get a broadband with any kind of money (maybe that's changed in the meanwhile, I don't know because I don't live there and haven't seen any further comments here either). Try to learn to respect other nations and countries too.

3rd) Like I said, if you'd ever used Amikit you'd know how it works, Amikit can install multiple versions (jump over multiple versions) at once.

4th) Quote:
You don't even use Aros.

You can't say what I use or doesn't because you've never visited my home ! (Well I don't use it actively anyway.)

@Hammer
Try to update to 1.1.4 directly from 1.1.2 or lower before commenting !

@all
Where can I get 7z unpacker for AROS from ?

Edit:

I have to download Quote:
463 MB
no matter if it's compressed or not.

If there's any chance to do a small update from 1.1.2 to 1.1.3 (or directly from 1.1.2 to 1.1.4) then show me where, please ?

Here in Italy, which practically is 3rd world in telecommunication competition (we've gone out from a monopoly to enter a trust of 'players' that apply the same prices, with same kind of offers...), there is the ability to pay broadband connections like dial-ups, counting the connection time or traffic. For spare downloads they can be a good solution.
But I always considered cheaper a monthly fee for a flat rate.
And now I pay for broadband connection much less than I did when I used dial ups.

Anyway, Tomppeli has hit the nail on a real issue. I'd personally like to waste less space and bandwith with my updates. The issue is that I don't know exactly how to filter a directory in order to keep ONLY updated files. What I'd need, is a linux shell script which compares two directory trees and deletes from the new one everything that perfectly matches the older one. The day I'll get it, just expect much littler update files!

@Tomppeli

You make me laugh, but please continue. I'm not going to be in your way.
So who are you going to say did something idiotic next ? Is that "respect" ??? Something you said I needed to learn ?

If this is soooo important to you then you put your finger on something YOU can contirbute to AROS (Icaros).So please go on help make "AmiKit" style updates for Icaros.

Tomppeli, 463 MB is the size of the *whole distribution*, not the update. The Live! distribution is intended for people who haven't installed anything yet, while the UPDATE (which is 78 MB big) is for people who already have.
Update disc from version 1.1.2 to 1.1.3 was 83 MB big.

(edit: added dl link for update cd 112-113)

Thanks ! I followed the hyperlink in this news ("version 1.1.4") and then another link from that page ("version 1.1.3"). Even from that page I can't find any direct link to that small 1.1.3 update. It would be nice if you could add links to the older (small) updates into that very first page. Can I use LiveUpdater to update from that downloaded ISO file ? And if so can I unpack that tgz file directly on Icaros/AROS ?

You should MANUALLY update from 1.1.2 to 1.1.3, and then use the LiveUpdater on the 1.1.3 for downloading and installing 1.1.4, providing that you have a working network in AROS.

Unluckily I don't remember when I introduced LiveUpdater exactly.

I suggest you to download both tgz files and extract the ISOs in different directories, then use the "from ISO" option in LiveUpdater to do both updates.

The best command for extracting files in a shell is

untgz filename.tgz

regards,

Note the IcAROS 1.1.3 i.e. my IcAROS hard disk installation started from 1.1.3.

I also downloaded 1.1.4 update ISO and unpacked it via WIn32 7-Zip. The auto-update was not working i.e. it stopped at mount the ISO image step.

PS: I'm typing this post via IcAROS 1.1.4's OWB (under Windows7 X64 RTM/VirtualBox i.e. for AC97, Wifi ). My laptop only has HDA and WiFi access (atm).
