In case you wondered what Spot/Up Rough has been up to lately, here's your answer:
I have been busy learning PHP/SQL/HTML. Five months later, here's the result...

Up Rough and Divine Stylers presents:

aSCIIaRENa Graphic

aSCIIaRENa Home Page link - the new home for the ASCII Scene is now officially launched!

aSCIIaRENa aims to be THE resource for Scene ASCII, as well as a database of artists and crews.
But not only that, you can vote and comment on collys.
Users can and are encouraged to submit ASCII Collections, ASCII Mags and ASCII related apps.

The site has the usual features, a tag wall, a forum, private messages etc.
The main feature is that it displays ASCII 100% accurate, just like in CED on your old 1084 monitor
on you Amiga thanks to the use of Ansilove that has been improved to fill the needs of aSCIIaRENA.

Main Coding: Spot / Up Rough^diViNe sTYLERs
Add Coding: Cleaner (Ansilove), Yonx / Up Rough

Thanks to:
Yonx, for being my SQL/Coding tutor through many long nights!
dMG, for being the main beta tester, and for asciiarena.com!
Ziphoid for hosting the site and for endless help/love/support, and for providing chill music via SceneSat!

Now, head over to aSCIIaRENa and have fun!

Just when I thought I'd seen the last of illegible scene logos.... I wish I still had all my old PETSCII (with animation and sound even), ANSI, and AVATAR logos. They were crap, but they were mine.

Breh - the site kicked me out with my Mac:

Error
You are using Safari. Get a decent browser boy!
Bugs in Safari prevents it from working properly with aSCIIaRENa,
use recent versions of FF, IE or Opera.

Then I have tried with OWB on AmigaOS 4, but with the same message...

I'm happy for you to learn stuff but what has this got to do with the Amiga? Your site tells me it is useless on an Amiga! I also think this is on the wrong forum, how does it relate to my AmigaOne please? It works on Linux? Again there is Linux forum here.

You are using Safari. Get a decent browser boy! I prefer this to that other one, it's a normal browser.

Bugs in aSCIIaRENa prevents it from working properly with AmigaOS4, where it doesn't even know what browser I am using (OWB) nor is there any mention of Amiga browsers. Even NetSurf, an apparently Amiga browser aSCIIaRENa has not heard of, works!

You are using AWeb. Amiga rulez!
aSCIIaRENa utilises functions not present in AWeb.
Please Upgrade to FF 3.5+, IE 8, Opera 10 or later.
Download Firefox 3.5 here!

Please remove this crap from your website. It's bad enough when windoze lusers do such things but to get from an amiga coder such as your self do it is disgusting.

If you want to add a note to a pages mentioning that I may not get the full experinec with AWeb that's one thing, completely blocking the site is another entirely!

[edit]
Your even blocking spoofing!

Hey Spot,

found some bugs:

1. I uploaded my colly but don't know that the file_id.diz must be within the txt-file. There's no option to reupload the fixed file or upload separate the missing .diz.

2. I created a comment with copy'n'paste the multiline text. Then in the result I see it's broken (with spaces and returns and so on). The EDIT-function don't let me fix the problem by deleting some lines.

3. Some artists are in unknown or indy groups which isn't correct. Unfortunately I can't find a EDIT-function to refer the names to the right groups (e.g. Yop is in Shrimps Design).

Nevertheless it's a great project (as I mentioned on the site too)!
=)

gtx, DaF.

Nice site, but, spotup, which fucntions are so necessary on site, which can't be handled by OWB ? (just in interest). From what i see on site, there is nothink so "heavy" for droping out OWB (i not talk about ibrowse, but OWB ..)

And indeed, strange that you write these messages about "amiga rulez, so upgrate to FF", in means that amiga suck with all that browsers. For me it looks strange then for what need post that news on amiga sites .. I can agree with ####ing up the bloody ibrowse (well, imho of course, some can say that ibrowse are good enough), but OWB ? What wrong with support that to make Amiga users happy for which you post these newses here ?:)

haha.... i knew this would come up. as long as amiga browser don't support embedded fonts, asciiarena is of no use to you as it's designed with and depending on a truetype version of the classic amiga font Topaz. Without it the site loose everything as it's designed to look like a BBS.

What has this got to do with amiga? The ascii scene, and ascii collys as a phenomena started and thrived on the amiga. If you never was involved in the scene and called 'elite' boards, then this might not make much sense no.

i would allow amiga browsers if they would display the site as intended.
I bet OWB will get support for embedded fonts soon, as OWB itself seems to support it, but not the amiga port.

When Firefox gets ported it will work.

As for Safari, it has some serious bugs in it's embedded font engine that makes the site unusable.
I bet apple will address this soon.

@kasie

yeah, OWB being the exception, it handles the site fine minus the lack of support for embedded fonts,
can you honestly say amiga doesn't suck hard in the browser area? Come on...

@spot
Of course it suck if compared with all modern browsers like FF/Opera/IE, etc, but, i just about making it comatibly with OWB .. In generall you are right, if Firefox will be ported there is no problems at all , but that "if", "when" and "maybe" and so on :)

Btw, maybe it possible to add some kind of the same version of site but with not embedded fonts (like when user come on index.php /html , then he have "version with blalbal, version without blabla".

But i agree, support somethink which are works rare and unsuported somethink are suck. I always hate that bloated ibrowse back in the times, when all the stuff works correctly on I.E/Opera/FF, but on ibrowse bugs start to happenes .. Good that we have OWB and FF soon (i hope).

ps. Browse more site for now - good job !

Sigh. I remember the days of being kicked from boards because I didn't have a modem supporting HST. Why not just suggest users change their fixed width font to one that supports the charactet set you want? If that's ASCII, I don't think it will be too difficult. (I never used Topaz in my terminal emulator, so I don't get the significance.)

It sounds strange it doesn't work on webkit and i'm sure they will fix this if it is the case but suggesting to use IE?? use FF.

this is just embarrasing.

btw, there is an other way of actually making the site work in every broswer out there, with the font..
Would take some work, but its not hard to do.

What is embarrassing? That the site doesn't work in Amiga browsers or that Amiga browsers can't display the website correctly?

I'm all for coding web pages to standards. That gives more motivation to have Amiga browsers support more of standards. Hence we end up with better browsers.

Same could be said on the browser end. It can be made to support embedded fonts, it would take some work, but it's not hard to do.

If you change the website you end up with +1 sites that works on Amiga. I think there is more benefit to advancing the Amiga browsers out there.
