I got the email from Ebay myself yesterday, born free taxed till death.

Stupid EU wasters, now you can pay VAT on a product umpteem times.

Shame as Ebay is (was) quite a useful place to source cheap second user hardware.

Your not paying VAT on the item your bidding on.

VAT is being added to the sellers fees ONLY

EG: your listing fee + final value fee will now be subject to VAT.

The fees will only affect sellers.
However I can see sellers passing these on to buyers with higher starting prices and higher reserves.

My thought as well, what rate of VAT will be charged?

I mean here in the UK it is 17.5% in another country it is high/lower, so whos do they use?

Well thats what happens when you don't read your mail properly!

Yes you are indeed correct, I can also see it being passed onto users, all in it's a bad day for Ebay & sellers.

The VAT rate depends on which country the seller is in.

This part of the law is actually to close a loophole which gave non-EU service providers selling to people in the EU an (unfair) advantage, as they could sell the same service as local companies, but without charging VAT - thereby undercutting the locals.

In other words, AOL isn't going to be so cheap after all.

From: 192.168.0.02 ..Pederburgh .. Iceni

But second hand goods are not generally subject to VAT.

AOL as a company are not selling old, used goods...and as such are required to pay "their fair share"

Sorry anarchaic ... British truckers have been through this with "Cabotage"

We, here in UK, Have highest road tax and fuel costs than practically (if not all) of ~Europe.

In the past this didn't matter so much because foreign hauliers were only allowed to deliver into UK and/or collect and deliver onto continent... NOT pick up & deliver in UK same as British Hauliers.....

This was because of the considerably lower running costs you "continentals" enjoy over us meant you could easily undercut ANY price a UK haulier quoted to a customer.

Of course ... The "Brussels Brigade" got wind of this and after considerable pressure was brought to bear, the UK government was forced to give in.

Now ( for quite a while) we had "Willie Betz" drivers all over UK paying their Romanian drivers about £15 per week wages !!

That situation has now been legislated against, but...

correct me if I'm wrong (I've never driven on the continent) But you "Euro's" don't pay road tax...You have toll booths instead, Which we (generally) dont.... Meaning you get untaxed road travel in UK.

Your fuel charges are considerably cheaper too
(Check out the size of continental fuel tanks... NO WAY they will be refuelling over here) So even your Per Kilometre charges are cheaper............

All this has caused considerable aggrovation amongst UK hauliers, But you don't hear Brits dragging continental drivers from their cabs and kicking the crap out of them...

or... Setting fire to their loads.

So much for undercutting the "locals"

( this wasn't really aimed at you personally, Anarchic. Just your comment about undercutting the locals)
