News   News : IContain announces Amiga branded TVs, cell phones and computers

A company called IContain is about to offer various Amiga branded devices.

From amiganews.de

IContain announces Amiga branded TVs, cell phones and computers When a certain Todd Kleperis contacted the Aminet team two days ago to "discuss your library of Amiga titles" and ask for "guidance as to how to work with the existing fan base", the initial reaction over over at Aminet was confusion.

@g_kraszewski

"This is done already and is named MorphOS..."

Well MorphOS is a different OS but essentially, yeah. Going down the AROS/ MorphOS route of picking your own name might be better if the Amiga brand continues down the path to brand meaningless.

I'm not being a snob about the products - theirs or Commodore USA's - because there's nothing wrong with TVs or tablets, and I'm writing this on a Linux computer (Crunchbang Linux - distro of kings!).

But you can't really have brand loyalty and fandom for a brand once it can be licensed by any company for any product. Because by that point it is literally just a word.

@jas_mc
I don't see it that way, not in light of IContain nor in light of cusa.

Amiga was evolving better/faster on the plethora of EXPANSION CARDS AVAILABLE even before Commodore went bankrupt, so, simply put Amiga is what's left from "that" path it was walking (again, way before commodore went bankrupt), and people here might be curious (or not) to see where it goes.

Amiga name directly connected to that history, still means something, Amiga name on Android gear (or generic stuff in general) is far beyond meaningless, but people have the power to discern among things, even unsuspecting JoeAverage will raise an eyebrow in front of an Amiga branded TV don't worry.

NOW THAT THE SITUATION IS AS IT IS NOW, THIS IS WHAT SHOULD BE HAPPENING:

If hyperion were smart, they would already be porting OS4 for those devices (specially x86 and arm) to sell it to all those new potential buyers which would enjoy a better OS experience, which we would then buy and happily publicite, and that way they would win again against Amiga.

BUT SADLY, THIS IS WHAT WILL HAPPEN FOR REAL:

Hyperion will castle around the x1000, and if everything goes with good luck to them, it will get finished and lauched, but sell around 2.000 units (at best) and it will be the end of the Trevor D. adventure.

While AROS will continue to expand its support and cover the majority of those devices, to become the new and real amiga experience which will be the only one we'll have to keep the dream alive.

We will be missing the crucial custom chips and innovative hardware, but it will be the best we can get until better times come back, and a real innovative company get's interested in the platform again and build some "ahead of its time" hardware.

I actually doubt many follow Amiga purely for the name (the very idea may even be an invention of some trolls).

If that had been true noone would have ever cared bout Amino and there intent/DE/AA crap even when they claimed that they would magiclly make it Amiga-compatible.

Many did see that as the holy path, and those allmost all ended in the red camp later on.

There are even some NotC=USA-name-followers a company that by virtue of design has nothing else to offer than those old names.....

"intent/DE/AA crap" was the last real opportunity for Amiga to become once again important on the market. Sadly, it never fulfilled its promises.

The news passed also on OSNEWS site

http://www.osnews.com/story/24464/Amiga_Brand_Not_Dirty_Enough_Dragged_Through_Mud_Some_More

There are plenty of trollish comments about the fact Amiga is dead...

Is no one Amiga Represntative (Hyperion, Acube, or even Trevor Dickinson) who will register OSNEws and stating officially:

Amiga are US!

The AmigaOS 4.x team and the actual platforms supporting it, SAM 440EP and SAM 460, and in the nearby future even AmigaONE X-1000!

We care only the brand Amiga regarding the Operating System.

Any other Amiga brand, without "real" hardware to sell and a "real" functioning Operating System makes us laughing.

Any other Amiga brand it is worth only for completely different purposes than actual Computer Market and/or enjoying with actual Hobby OS Amiga Niche or any future development to a more wide market niche.

An official statement will end the silly blatant comments, and will shut-up all the trolling comments about Amiga is dead or Amiga brand is rubbish...

Please, if any of you reafers have direct contact with Trevor Dickinson, or with Hyperion or with Acube (in the sense that you have an active mail discussion actually, and they answer to you on regular basis), please inform them to go to OSNEws and make any official statement to proof that Amiga is still alive.

I hope that someone of these firms will read my post, so it will be no necessity to try to mail and spam them until they will notice my heartfelt appeal.

IContain it's not to be taken too seriously and (if even that) a problem just for Cusa. No matter what old Barry and Leo state about it, they should realize ICOntain just gave true Amigans THE best example of the fact that cusa's crap it's just a PC+sticker.

Imagine a future conversation:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unsuspecting Customer: wow Amiga is back!

Amigan: Actually Amiga never ceased to exist, BUT, Cusas' stuff is unrelated to Amiga and just a standard PC with a sticker on it.

Unsuspecting customer: how come?

Amigan: Amiga inc. lost AmigaOS running on custom HW and the main guy there, Bill McEwen, is now dead-broke. Due to this fact, he is licensing the name even to Dishwashers makers.

Unsuspecting Customer: any proof?

Amigan: HERE

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And that's it, easy as cake.

At this point the more they are, the easier it gets, but make no mistake, the direct evolution of 25 years of history can only get more noble in light of this crap, and not lose value as someone here tries to imply.

Were there really that many people who bought into the idea that Amiga DE was the future for Amiga OS. I found it almost as underwhelming as Gateway's Linux plans and thought that OS4 only came into being because the majority shared this view.

I guess there were.

"Hyperion Entertainment is very pleased to announce that it has finalised an initial version of its “Warp3D” technology, a mature, small foot-print, feature-rich yet very fast 3D solution for Elate™/ Amiga DE™ based devices."

There were. At least for some time. I remember very well the Cologne fair, where the Next Gen Amiga Plans where revealed. I had mixed emotions about the fact that the OS I knew for years was about to be replaced by something different. So I talked to some people, e.g. to a well known jounalist of "AmigaOS". He was pretty clear about his opinion, that those NG plans are the only way forward for Amiga, and the classic OS according to him was, simply put, "just crap" There were also others who but real money into the DE effort (again, at least at the begining), the wildfire guys come to mind. Others went simply mad, when Amiga inc. finaly introduced their plans for a ppc based Amiga OS and left the scene (Not many, but still)
Oh and once I met a guy (totaly unrelated to Amiga, I thought), we had a nice talk and during our conversation we came to computers in general and the machines of our childhood. When I told him, that I was a huge Amiga Fan, he became upset, and told me, that he actually had his own small company , which did translation jobs for software companies. He was offered to do professional translations for Amiga DE and such, spent a lot of money, but well, as we are talking about AI, he never saw a single cent. In the end his business went down (Not only due AI, but they where for sure the nail in the coffin...)

So, to sum it up, in the very begining, jep, there where several people who where rather excited about the plans from AI. Until the world did know...

Amiga Inc always enjoyed overwhelming support with Amiga magazines. I remember reading quite lot about Amiga Inc and DE from British magazines.

I wasn't following back in those days, but I purchased several back issues of italian Magazine AmigaLife (last one sold at national newstands) and each and every issue starts with Daniele Franza's (editor in chief) pledges to the italian Amiga community, to actually start to "like" AmigaDE and what Ainc was doing as they were receiving only protest letters.
The magazine died with Franza's last pldege as he kept receiving complaints, so I guess that stuff wasn't that popular where I live at least...

I think Hyperion are realists, OS4 is not (from my experience as a user) ready to compete in a market space with heavy weights like Android and Apple's iOS, then there's the direction Canonical is steering Ubuntu in, with tablets expected soon sporting the new Unity interface.

What's with the "iContain protecting Amiga" line on iContain's website, what exactly are they protecting? Nice photoshop mock-ups, can't wait to get my Amiga branded smart-phone and plasma tele .

Do you have a breakdown of sales data? Can you give us the link? (just out of curiosity, we never cease to learn new things in Amigaland )

LOL, what about doing a microwave oven or vacuum cleaner with the Amiga name?

And make it look like the Walker. (Sorry I couldn't resist.)

Better to call the vacuumcleaner 'Sucker'! (I couldn't resist too...)

Remember the slogan of Electrolux when they planned to penetrate the Amirican market? 'Nothing sucks like an Electrolux!'

Quoting from this article from rtohq. Looks like this Todd Kleperis is using the Amiga's history of innovation to leverage his 'rent-to-own' sales and distribution model. Bill must have decided he can make enough cash to keep himself comfortable from simply licensing out the name.

The News link you posted still shows nothing today btw.

The original article by cgutjahr contains the same link under "update".

Oh, and the summation in the little news panel at right of the news section is still missing too.

Where is this announcement on amiga.com btw?
