A company called IContain is about to offer various Amiga branded devices.

From amiganews.de

IContain announces Amiga branded TVs, cell phones and computers When a certain Todd Kleperis contacted the Aminet team two days ago to "discuss your library of Amiga titles" and ask for "guidance as to how to work with the existing fan base", the initial reaction over over at Aminet was confusion.

Funny, it seems to be lacking in completion of his thought especially with those trailing periods afterwards.

he hopes that "Aros-inspired OS" wasn't meant to be a reference to Commodore USA's still-not-available product (presumably Workbench 5, since AFAIK that's all CUSA has proposed in OS space... but an Aros-inspired OS on Amiga-branded hardware is reported to be untenable).

No, I am not referring to WB5 at all. WB5 is mostly a YALD.

Ellipsis can mean a number of things, but either way, I'm purely being the messenger there - I'm aware that Workbench 5 will be Linux with a Gnome desktop

Yes, and no. I still feel that Hyperion's OS is sufficiently buttery to hold my interest. And ACube are close enough to the real thing that I can't believe their product isn't butter, if you'll forgive the reference.

These PCs, well. Even before being spread out across multiple vendors, they already lacked the ethos of the original product, so they were already into cheap margarine territory from the start in my opinion...

Too right mate. This strategy from Amiga Inc reeks of Acorns' PC licensing strategy and Commodore branded gaming PCs. Where are they now? How long will the PC rubbish last. Not long. Hopefully these are the death throws and in 5 years time Amiga Inc will finally be finished. Viva the AmigaOne and AmigaOS brand names. Let's hope this rubbish doesn't confuse the already small potential market!!!

Commodore Gaming made some cool cases though

I'm really bored about all this ridicolous rembranding scene, being it C=USA, IContain or Next-Amiga-Exclusive-Licensee...
I would suggest to exclude this kind of ads from the news, since they're becoming really boring...

Really, who cares?

I see what you mean, and it makes sense, but huston we have a problem.
The original girl won't change its legitimate name no matter how many girls with the same name you meet.
AmigaOS is rightfully called so, and must not change its name because a bunch of morons license a sticker to products that Amiga history consider 100% unrelated.
It is the other way around if any.

Otherwise all keep the names they have and it will be us, that will explain to people what is what, I have no problem with that, I'm sure many amigans won't either...

@thread

I'm still confused.

Todd Kleperis posted:

Quote:
IContain and Amiga have partnered to launch a full line of consumer electronics with M2M and security devices in them

source

Amiga.com, which I thought was the mouthpiece for Amiga Inc., only has mention of a C=USA announcement. Even that is not the usual style. It used to be "Amiga announces", "Amiga launches", "Amiga Introduces", etc. This is basically saying "C=USA says".

In the case of the C=USA announcement, maybe because of Amiga Inc's divestiture, they can't do anything but quote C=USA. Maybe a legal eagle here could shed some light on that.

But then why not the same from Icontain, since they are on record with stating the partnership? Maybe it's just me, but I would have expected both partners to have acknowledged the partnership. *shrug*

OK, new avatar it is.

Regarding the I-Contain announcement - Bill is quoted in that article as being in on this. The article cannot be found at the moment, of course, which is problematic. But Barry on commodore-amiga.org has commented on this as well:

Quote:
Although I am not personally familiar with the principals of iContain, I did speak with Bill McEwen earlier this week, and feel confidant that this new licensee will bring much to the table...

Also, on Amiga.org, user 'iggy' seems to have some contact with Barry (he did interview him, so we can probably assume he's telling the truth), and says this:

Quote:
Yeah guys, Barry confirmed to me that this is Mr. Bill's doing. Or as he put it "wild Bill strikes again…". I don't know that he's real happy with this, but i don't think he's taking it too seriously. "pipe dreams at best…let's see…."

Which is interesting, because Barry is all sunshine, light and well-wishing positivity on c-a.org.

I can't say anything about the legal situation here, but this doesn't seem too far out of character for Amiga Inc. Their 'about Amiga Inc' sections on Barry's press releases have been entirely consistent with their past duckspeak and their lateness on I-Contain would not be a surprise. Regardless, Barry seems to believe in them. How much legitimacy that grants them, though, is open for debate.

Yes, both the news and the briefer news summary in the panel right of that are still missing.

But this still remains:

Quote:
We were told that the licensing deal was "cut just recently by the executor of an estate",

Whom, besides John Grzymala, is executor of an estate?

Quote:
Their 'about Amiga Inc' sections on Barry's press releases have been entirely consistent with their past duckspeak and their lateness on I-Contain would not be a surprise.

That too. This sounds like a Ruksun repeat in many ways. No hand knowing what the other hands are doing...

@Webba from 2006:

Quote:
Well it is not the first time Amiga reveals a deal and the other side says nothing.
Still waiting for the confirmation on Ruksun site

Although this time it's the other way around. *sigh*

I actually doubt many follow Amiga purely for the name (the very idea may even be an invention of some trolls).

If that had been true noone would have ever cared bout Amino and there intent/DE/AA crap even when they claimed that they would magiclly make it Amiga-compatible. (snip)

At the time they claimed it was Amiga-like in many ways, albiet more modern. For example they were going to have something like Datatypes (dunno if they ever actually did).

So you could argue an (alledgely) Amiga-like thing with the Amiga name might be sufficient for some to give them the benefit of the doubt, and try the SDK. That it never took-off with developers shows (I think) that just sticking the Amiga name on something is not sufficient...

P.S. Tis a pity you have to use such inflammatory words though (most of which I snipped) or I might actually take you seriously (and so be more likely to respond to what you say)...

After reading the article on OS News, I felt much the same way about iContain as the rest of you seem to.

So I sent 2 very nasty emails to them to tell them that they were wasting their time, and that no-one in the Amiga community would buy unbranded consumer electronics just because someone put an Amiga stcker on it.

2 very nasty emails indeed.

Todd replied almost immediately, and he's convinced me that he actually wants to supply us with hardware that runs Amiga OS 4.x. He told me that he's tried to contact Hyperion, but they won't reply.

I thought that a little strange, so I sent an email to the webmaster on Hyperion's site. I got a reply almost immediately from Rogue, who told me that to his knowledge, Todd has never tried to contact Hyperion.

So I gave Rogue's email to Todd and told him to email him, straight away. Todd tells me he did so, but got no reply.

I'm finding this very frustrating. Am I the only one here who wants an Amiga phone?

@LoneHaranguer

You posted this elsewhere:

Quote:
I told Todd about the other "flavours" of Amiga - MorphOs and AROS. He tells me that he's going to look at IcAROS, since Hyperion don't seem to be interested.

Is this ^^ from the initial mailing or an update, indicating a later reply?

Err, how is IContain protecting Amiga? The product I assume.

And what's with this Android OS? Will that be running Workbench too?

Since there indeed are some possibilities, and when considered they are using wordpress template, they might have got in to one of those possibilities, like their server running on same server as some other site that have got the whole server blacklisted by rogues emails server and hence Todds emails not getting through to Rogues at all.

Therefore i suggest you write to rogue, ask for a phone number Todd can call, and then email Todd that phone number.

And even better, ask Rogue three specific times in advance when he will be waiting for the call from Todd.

Then there wont be "Didnt answer me/Havent received anything" anymore, unlrdd one of them is BSing.

it would seem this is a deal controlled by McEwen

I was reading an issue of Amiga Format from 1998 the other day and there was a piece in there about Petro's Amiga Inc and a section about Mcewen, singing his praises on how he's a firm Amiga fan and looking forward to marketing the brand all over the world.

I think it's fair to see, he's been just as bad as Medhi Ali (if not worse) for killing the Amiga and dragging its name through the dirt over the years, I think I speak for the remaining community as a whole when I say I wish he would just **** off and get a proper job and leave us alone.

How he's still earning a living from "Amiga" these days is beyond me when they haven't done anything in 10 years.

This doesn't have any sense. Are real, accurate and, most important, precise LEGAL information about to who is the "REAL" proprietary of the Amiga brand and all of it's assets? Who retain all Amiga patents and logo etc???? Was the previous trial a fake or what?

From what I remember Amiga Inc had an exclusive licence from Gateway, Amiga Inc went bust and transferred their licence to Amino, who in turn rebranded themselves to Amiga Inc, Gateway was sold to Acer, and now Amiga Inc are re-licensing their "exclusive licence" to third parties 12 years down the line.

Acer are probably the "owners" though, but it's likely they don't even know it.
