Announcement   Announcement : Icaros Desktop 1.3.2 available for download
posted by paolone on 15-Oct-2011 21:25:20 (2797 reads)
Version 1.3.2 of the popular AROS distribution has been released. This update introduces support for the newest and fastest GeForce cards currently available on the market (the models based on the "Fermi" architecture: GT, GTS/GTX 400 and 500), and turns on wi-fi communications on RTL8187B based USB wireless adapters. Drivers for SB128 and CMI8738 sound cards have been integrated in the distribution, enabling audio on VMware and on a wider range of physical computers.

Great work Paolo and all of the developers that put so much time into this worthwhile project. Aros is a great piece of development that not only allows non ppc owning people to have access to the nicest fast OS around but also give the PPC owning Amiga fans some great code to work with to improve their great experience.

Cannot say how much I love you guys for working so hard on this and helping to keep the Amiga dream alive for those with intel hardware.

enabling audio on VMware

This is good news, as it hopefully means I will no-longer need a second (not so good) emulator to get sound on AROS.

CIAO! BRAVO BRAVO.

Where do you folks find the time to create such a great "out of the box" system? Downloaded it with no problem, ran it Live with no problem...looks great. rock on!

Nice update, Thanks.

But it would be nice to see OWB for AROS updated. Maybe port OWB-MUI to AROS...

Cool!!!

As a matter of fact, I await an USB Pendrive bootable version, coming to me via a post in order to try it on my CD-drive-less netbook. That's the only of my three PC machines that supports WiFi vendor-tailored stack (Atheros), just couldn't install the damn thing via USB-plugged CD drive (though a friend of mine told, it is possible but needs some hacking...). Anyway I'd be happy to have it dual boot soon.

Just a question since it's coming soon, I'd like to be kept up-dated as it comes to major and minor AROS builds when they're released. Is it suggested or at least safe to do an upgrade from within a system? Until now, I have a serious mental problems in doing an in-system upgrade in Ubuntu, I think I might do such with Windows (Vista and upwards). Can AROS handle that?

Thx for suggestions. One more - is my then-other-installed-system safe, too, while doing an AROS upgrade?

Icaros has already been installable and bootable from pendrives for a (long) while, the fixed issue is with updating only. It's strange you couldn't install it using a USB CD drive (I hope you meant DVD DRIVE, CDs are not enough), Poseidon can easily handle this kind of hardware. If it may help, I noticed that the port where you connect your peripherals matter. For instance, on my netbook I couldn't even boot the Icaros DVD if I plugged the drive in a port Poseidon disliked. Try changing port and be sure it's a DVD drive.

You can easily update any AROS installation by replacing older files with newer from any nighlty build. I have chosen to limit this feature on Icaros, though, because I had people complaining that after an update this or that thing stopped working. So I decided you can update Icaros with official update packs only. Individual files may always be replaced by hand, though, if you konow what you're doing. Please also notice that the "Extras" directory structure of Icaros Desktop is quite different from the one in the nightlies, and that icons are completely different.
