Amigaworld.net News   Amigaworld.net News : X500 PLUS - A500 inspired case ready for pre-orders (UPDATED)
posted by vox on 3-May-2012 22:55:34 (6863 reads)
Hi everyone,

Presenting the X500 PLUS, a tribute to the computers of the '80s and 90s and the legendary A500.

Supports powerful x86 boards (mini-itx and flex-atx boards).
Build and customise your own retro but powerful and modern wedge shaped machine running AROS, Windows, Linux, WinUAE, build your Natami machine.

Supports the SAM boards by ACube running OS4. SAM 440, 440 flex and 460.

Some limitations: being only 58mm high you’ll need to use processors heatsinks that fit (my Intel i3 came with the right low profile heatsink for example).

There is no need to do anything with the SAMs obviously, maybe just file the I/O panel a bit.

You’ll be using a picoPSU (of your choice and they come in 80, 90, 120, 150 and 160W) so power is at a premium and also you need to consider heat generated.

The X500 PLUS shown in the video has:
Intel i3 cpu running at 2.5GHz
8GB DDR3 RAM (16GB supported
USB3.0
HDMI ports
x16 PCI-Express slot
, here I have connected an ATI Radeon HD 6570 2GB graphics card. This is one of the most powerful low profile cards you can get and it does get hot but it runs games such as Mass Effect 3 really well. My set up also has a 150W picoPSU with external 150W brick. See video.
The X500 PLUS has one low profile expansion slot. Length and thickness (no dual slot) limit of the card applies, the ATI HD 6570 2GB above is 170mm long for example and it fits nicely.

Full size, easy to find, standard keyboard.

It’s quite a good one, chiclet keyboard and it comes in white or black.
Model: Emprex 6310U keyboard and I can only find them with the U.K. layout so if you want you can buy the case without the keyboard and get your localised version yourself.

The adhesives for the Amiga keys “A” are available from ACube, amigakit and others. They should fit nicely over the rounded Windows logos.

Space for a slim DVD-RW/Blu-Ray
3.5” multi card reader
Two to three 2.5” Hard Disk or Solid State Drives
(I recommend the SSDs as they have no moving parts, they are faster, silent and don’t generate heat).

Fractal Design silent 40mm fan, like the one in the video or Scythe silent 40mm.

A black version will be available.

A minimum of 50 orders is necessary to go ahead, the case is made of lots of parts so I will be assembling them one by one…so please be patient.

You will have to use your best pc building skills to make it nice and tidy inside, routing cables the proper way and allow good airflow, I’ll see if I can provide cable ties.

Crank the volume right up and select HD...

@TheDaddy

Case looks like an A500, without being too retro, very smart!

Like the Emprex keyboard, have one myself in black, perfect fit I would imagine as very thin. You can program the volume controls with AllKeys too.

Hehe thank you...you know exactly what I mean now. Those extra volume keys are very handy and of all the keyboards I bought for the project...18 I think...these were the perfect fit. White or black. Quite good typing experience, I liked them instantly.

For the perfect Amiga retro feel it should have a slot load CD drive on the right hand side.

....and the LEDs should be on the right too rather than in the middle.

But REALLY nice work none the less :)

The Emprex 6310U keyboards I have are REVISION V1.2

Damn! That's probably why I got mine real cheap off (IIRC) Play.com . They were getting rid of buggy Rev 1.0 ones.

Oh well, at least I know what to look for if I want a cheap alternative to my Apple keyboard (which I thought was extortionatly expensive until I saw the price of microswitched keyboards...).

Chris,

I have got both the Rev 1.0 and 1.2 and I have to say they behave identically under Linux, Windows 7, XP and I didn't notice that problem with OS4.1.4.

I have also got an incredibly expensive Apple aluminium keyboard (I usually don't get ripped off that easily by Apple but I bought it as a present), my heart bled when I paid £46.35 for it. FORTY SIX POUNDS and THIRTY FIVE PENCE!

I am happy with the Emprex... on my Windows box and using it on the X500 PLUS feels right but of course it's all down to taste, this is why technology moved away from keyboard-cases...

Amazing, a real step up on your previous products but with the same eye for detail! I wish you every success with it.

Thank you very much.

I have quickly updated my page, sorry about the quality of the photographs, taken with a crappy mobile...

www.loriano.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk

I have also taken a couple of photos with the Apple aluminium keyboard as I was asked to check if it fits.

It does but it might need a bit of adjustment.

@ The Daddy

Do you have to include the DVD-RW as part of the case? Someone who wishes to use it for an FPGA Aracade or Minimig might not want an optical drive. Such a drive could be easily installed by the user based on their needs. Someone might prefer a BluRay+DVD-RW for example.

It should reduce your out-of-pocket expenses.

It will also end the debate on slot loading or tray loading.

This is a friendly request from Commodore USA, LLC, the licensee of the trademark, to remove the AMIGA branding from the advertising of this unit.

This CUSA just saying dam you done something we were not able to do, not only build a great case on such a small budget compared to us, but properly interact with the community.

LoL

The case is not being sold with Amiga branding, the vid just show how to customise the case with your own Amiga stickers. Plus I seem to remember before you gain license to the Amiga brand you had your own case up clearly marketed toward the Amiga community by calling it Amigo you can't now complain about community effort doing the same thing.

They probably don't have any call if it used in conjunction with AmigaOS since that's Hyperion's right. I doubt Hyperion will complain because just for illustration purposes and the X500 Plus may actually beneficial to OS4 sales anyway.

Amiga + Boing Ball or Tick marks a probably all they can stop him from using so no big deal as long as Loriano cut a few picks out and re-edit the youtube vid.

While CUSA have every right to complain now that they've licensed the Commodore and Amiga brands it is quite ironic considering their beginnings and the Baron's attitude that everything is their for the taking even if don't want to pay for it.

@BigBenTheAussie

Removed the tick and renamed the Amiga to Amica (Italian for female friend)...

Also added another disclaimer:

I hope it's ok, all this Photoshopping is tiring.

@everyone

Thanks
