software OS4   software OS4 : Sam460ex_setup released
   posted by m3x on 13-Jun-2012 14:48:53 (1735 reads)
A little utility to optimize performance on your Sam460ex board.

What it does:

* enables Store Gathering in CCR0 register.
This new setting doubles write speed to a PCI Express graphic card (up to 320 MB/s
on a Radeon X1950 and up to 300 MB/s on a Radeon HD 4650 PCI-E card) and
increase 50% write speed to a PCI card.
Ragemem and Gfxbench2D will show higher values for CPU (not DMA) initiated
data transfers.

How to use:

* add the utility to WBStartup with Prefs/WBStartup, or put it in S:user-startup
if you need to specify arguments

* if run from the shell, it accept the following arguments:
VERBOSE to show some informations

Notes:

* This utility may be obsolete with a future AOS4.1 kernel update.

History:

13-Jun-2012 - Version 1.0
first release.

You can download it from OS4Depot now!

Are these 320MB/sec values the highest ever reported for graphic card writes on Amiga PPC devices?
On any PowerPC HW ever? (fastest G5 PowerMacs might have been better than this)

(I imagine it's the same as RAM to VRAM copy thingly like on Hanz tests
http://hdrlab.org.nz/benchmark/gfxbench2d/OS/AmigaOS/Result/584
http://hdrlab.org.nz/benchmark/gfxbench2d/OS/AmigaOS/Result/656 )

Ran GFX2DBench and uploaded my results for a variety of 32-bit screen results.

Thanks for this release!

Someone got a link to 2D bench results made with this latest setup tool?

(after 1 minute search I did not find these new results there)

I thought a PCIe based machine would be faster.
AGPx2 = 533MB/s
AGPx4 = 1066MB/s
AGPx8 = 2133MB/s

G5 have fast memory controller so it should not be problem to reach that 320MB/s value with or without AGP/PCIe DMA.

Keep in mind that in addition to the cpu you can also use DMA to copy data to gfx mem, so even a G4 based mac could move data between memory and gfx mem reaching the maximum speed allowed by ram (that would be higher than cpu to ram writes). That's why DDR&DDR2 are useful on G4 based machines, the cpu can't take full advantage of DDR&DDR2 but all the rest of hardware can, so you can have textures in ram that are copied to gfx mem without cpu intervention at the maximum speed allowed by ram controller.

I have installed it, what happens next, somewhere I can test speeds?

My result

@Crumb

Well news items seams to suggest it depends on type of graphic card your using.
Big difference between theoretical values and measured / bench marked values.

Is not AGP GRANT sidebands hard to exploit fully.

PCIe has theorethical 250MB/s per lane speed.
SAM460 has 4 lanes, so 1GB/sec theorethical.
(IIRC, it does PCIe v1, not v2)

It might be impossible to get near 1GB/sec by PPC460 CPU?
But perhaps with RAM to VRAM DMA transfer.

(similarly x1000 should one day reach 4GB/sec when DMA is used)

Has anyone done before and after tests with ragemem to see what the video bus test reveals.
