hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : A-EON Technology secures graphic card support for AmigaOS 4
   posted by TrevorDick on 24-Jun-2012 12:24:28 (14987 reads)
Over the Rainbow

Cardiff, 25th June 2012

A-EON Technology is pleased to announce that it has signed a new development agreement with premier AmigaOS graphics specialist Hans de Ruiter which ensures the future compatibility of AmigaOS 4 with the latest RadeonHD graphics cards. In addition to the HD4000 (R700) graphics drivers released with the AmigaONE X1000 “First Contact” system, we have now contracted Hans to create a series of drivers for the RadeonHD family. This also includes support for Evergreen, Northern Islands and the recently released Southern Islands HD7000 series. These new drivers, which are exclusively licensed to A-EON Technology, will support the X1300-1950, 5000, 6000 & 7000 series RadeonHD graphics cards and provide AmigaOS 4 with access to the latest in graphic card technology.

Trevor Dickinson commented, “This is a major boost for the AmigaOS and is the first time that these modern graphics cards have been supported on non x86 systems. Hans has already released several updates to his RadeonHD driver and support for Evergreen and Northern Islands cards is already up to the standard of the R700 drivers released with the AmigaONE X1000. He has also made excellent progress with drivers for AMD's Southern Islands cards. Hans de Ruiter replied, "I was initially disappointed when supply of Radeon HD 4000 series became scarce but now I'm proud of what has been achieved. The RadeonHD driver once again supports some of the latest cards available." His comments were echoed by a long time AmigaOS 4 developer and A1-X1000 beta tester who stated, "Looks like OS4 won't have to worry about availability of compatible graphics cards anytime soon". We can only agree.

The AMD RadeonHD series to be supported include:-

X1300-1950 - R520 chipset
HD4000 - R700 series
HD5000 - Evergreen series – first released in September 2009
HD6000 - Northern Island series – first released in October 2010
HD7000 - Southern Island series – latest RadeonHD cards released in January 2012

Although the RadeonHD driver is exclusively licensed to A-EON Technology for AmigaOS 4, owners of ACube's "Next Generation Amiga" systems need not despair. They will be able to purchase RadeonHD driver updates via the A-EON Technology website for their Sam460 and AmigaOne 500 systems. AmigaKit will also be offering RadeonHD graphics cards and driver bundles. Please visit the AmigaKit website for more details. Customers who purchase the new driver will qualify for free upgrades, up to and including version 1.0 of the RadeonHD driver. Registered AmigaONE X1000 "First Contact" customers will be able download driver updates free of charge from the A-EON Technology website.

About Hans de Ruiter & HDRLab: Hans de Ruiter is an electrical & electronic engineer and leading AmigaOS developer and Amiga enthusiast. His website - HDRLab - details various projects, many of which are AmigaOS related. The biggest of these is the RadeonHD driver for AmigaOS, an ambitious project that aims to deliver modern graphics capabilities for the AmigaOS platform.

About AmigaOS: The AmigaOS dates back to 1985 with the introduction of the landmark Amiga 1000. Today, under the guidance and control of Hyperion Entertainment, AmigaOS has evolved into a modern operating system without losing that intrinsic "Amiga" look and feel.

About the AmigaONE X1000: The AmigaONE X1000 is not like other computers. It is a culmination of efforts by real Amiga enthusiasts and developers to create powerful, modern desktop hardware for the AmigaOS. It is the natural evolution of the Amiga's PowerPC lineage and is based on the PA-Semi Dual-core PA6T-1682M CPU and includes Xena, a "Software Defined Silicon" co-processor. Above all it runs the latest version of the AmigaOS.

AboutAmigaKit: AmigaKit is a trading division of Leaman Computing Ltd based in Cardiff, UK. It acquired the stock of Eyetech Group Ltd in 2006 and quickly established itself as a world-wide market leader in the retail and distribution of Amiga hardware and software. A-EON Technology appointed AmigaKit as its primary distributor for all its AmigaONE products.

how well is this driver working with the best avaible gfx card in an amiga one micro..i am thinking about getting an gfx card to my amiga one micro and some more memory..

A gfx card WILL NOT WORK in a micro, period & will only work with 512MB max, if you're lucky enough to find a memory card that works. Forget the new drivers until you have a new system that works with a gfx card.

I am so surprised at how many negative comments there are in this thread! This is great news for Amiga OS and the subsidised price for non-X1000 customers is more than fair. It's a reflection of the inclusive efforts of Trevor and the community that the new drivers will be made available to users of other hardware despite the high cost of development.

It would be nice to see ACube getting involved too but personally I hope the drivers are appreciated and embraced so A-Eon/Trevor doesn't just haemorrhage money to a chorus of people complaining it's not free..

If you have bought OS4.1 this is what you can get now for no extra cost

(I have not included classic machines)

drivers for Radeon 7000, 9250 and equiv cards. 2D has overlay, 3D through Warp3D

Sam460 and X1000 owners also have drivers for RadeonHD 4xxx cards, 2D has no overlay, no 3D support.

the new driver will buy you access to Radeon cards from 1xxx to 7xxx as in the press release for 2D, again without overlay, but you dont need to buy it if you are a sam460 or X1000 owner with a RadeonHD 4xxx card.

X1000 owners do not pay extra for this new driver as they already paid for it in the cost of the X1000.

this new driver will *not work* on Peg2 or micro boards.

3D support for these newer cards is planned for OS4.2

what have i missed?

*edit*

Hans talks about overlay, and how not having it is not a big issue, in the comments here

please please please go to http://hdrlab.org.nz/ and look at the dev diary, the list of recommended cards, and what cards work on what machines. Hans has so much info there its just silly.

The driver should work on Sam440ep models using a PCI version of the Radeon HD Cards

One can only assume from that, is that, UBoot on the SAM is far more capable than the XE and the x86 emulator can initialise a card behind a bridge unlike my XE.
I don't own a SAM so can't comment for sure.

@whiners

What's wrong with you, people? Some four or five years ago there was no Amiga hardware to buy AT ALL. Now we have it, and on top of this somebody gives you the opportunity to use high-end gfx cards for, what, something like 30 pounds? And you go and whine in the forums, sounding like you've been ripped off? Well that's what I call being spoilt!

@all

I didn't mean to 'whinge' as some have put it, I was merely asking for clarity over questions that remained unanswered - no-one wants to spend money 'willy-nilly' especially during a world recession if they absolutely don't have to.

I've 'donated' to many AmigaOS 'projects' in the past, AmigaWorld (see my Avatar), VivaAmiga, AmigaFuture, Hollywood, Hollywood Designer (I barely use it), BitByBitSoftware, even AmigaKit - I bought an Amiga-branded keyboard and mouse I didn't really need.

And beyond money itself I've donated time and effort, Jack foreinstance, the old AmigaOS.net which I like to think kicked Steven Solie into first gear, I contribute to the AmigaOS Wiki amongst other things.

In summary:

Hearing it from the 'horse's mouth' (Hans) has cleared up any doubts in my mind and has offered reassurance. I agree with Hans, the situation is not ideal, I am happy to 'fund' future graphic driver development by buying this driver for the sake every past, present and future AmigaOS customer.

I would pay for overlay support for radeon 4xxx series! Overlay is a MUST for a modern OS imho.

@ JurassicC

Adjustments were made to the Sam 440ep Uboot to allow them to work with the bridge .

I simply don't understand ANY of the "complaints" made in this thread, they seem extremely poorly thought out:

If you have a Sam460 with a Radeon HD 4xxx card, it hasn't suddenly stopped working because of this. And the newer drivers do not add any new functions (as far as has been reported). So buying the new drivers for an existing OS4 machine seems almost entirely pointless (AFAICS).

I believe that 3D (when we get it) will work just fine with the existing Radeon HD drivers - just look at Hans' 3D demo. So no need to upgrade to newer drivers!

Sam460 users wishing to upgrade from a Radeon HD 4xxxx to a 5xxx or above card, could not do so before. So they have not lost anything, but they have now gained the chance to buy such drivers...

...except I see no big reason to upgrade from a 4xxx to a 5xxx or above card, because my understanding is that manufacturers stopped bothering about 2D performance years ago, so 2D performance should not be significantly different. Discussing 3D performance is mostly pointless when we don't even have it yet, but IMHO the 4xxx series should be good enough for most 3D stuff we are likely to want to do.

And Hans has to be paid for his driver work, whether A-Eon, ACube, Hyperion, or whoever pays him. Which means that ultimately *we* will pay for it, typically as part of the cost of a new OS4 machine. So in the end it doesn't make any real difference, hence no reason to complain.

I think that covers just about every possible angle. You will note that I am focused on *end results*, rather than on "I only want it done the way I'm familiar with".

@CrisH

Add to that, overlay support wasn't gonna happen and still doesn't seem to be happening (as it's not the currently preferred method of displaying video. Which really makes sense, as putting in a lot of work to support something that is becoming obsolete isn't the most inspiring thing you can do). So that takes care of all the whining.

If anyone STILL wants overlay support, set up a bounty or similar for that (if Hans is willing to do it for a bounty, that is. He might very well not be interested).
