software OS4   software OS4 : New and updated plug-ins for ADRipper
   posted by Trixie on 8-Jul-2012 18:23:38 (3040 reads)
Daniel "Trixie" Jedlicka has released a collection of encoder plug-ins for ADRipper, OS4's prime audio-grabbing software written by CentaurZ.

Read more...

On top of the updated MP3 and Ogg Vorbis plug-ins, the pack now extends the range of supported formats to include FLAC, a lossless format that is quickly becoming the format of choice for many digital audiophiles. (Under AmigaOS 4.x, you can use AmigaAMP or TuneNet to play FLAC files.) Two other new plug-ins included in the pack bring support for the long-standing audio industry standards, AIFF and RIFF-WAVE.

Could be the new libmp3lame. Sadly I don't have the old version V1.2 was linked with so I cannot test and compare.

1.2 encoders do use Altivec. I don't think these news build use it, hence the 25% difference.

@Trixie
Well done!

@K-L
No, the previous version did not use AltiVec. The G4 build was never included in the archive because one of the betatesters had trouble with it (or it seemed). AFAIK, now with the latest port on OS4depot even Lame command line tool itself crashes with AltiVec patches, so it's even worse. So, unless someone adapt the patches to the latest version we are stucked with G3 build.

Strange: I've just tried both the previous (1.2) and the new (1.3) plugin version on my Sam Flex, encoding a couple of CDs into 192kbps variable-bitrate MP3 (with Engine Quality set to "Standard"). Version 1.2 is indeed a little faster but no way the difference makes 25 per cent - on my system, plugin version 1.3 is just about 5-6 per cent slower than the old version.

@centaurz

Mate as i told you some time ago (when i did the translation) there are some strange problem with the AISS buttons in the main ADRipper program, they happen mostly trying to open the prefs window clicking on the "prefs button" but sometimes even clicking other buttons can cause a system freeze .. instead there are no problem opening the prefs from menu (tools --> prefs)

So in short there are some little bug somewhere (that cause freeze) that need to be checked

@samo79

IIRC this is a long standing bug that CentaurZ already noted as being a problem with the toolbar gadget. I was experimenting the same on my XE, and eventually I ended using exclusively the menu.

Now you'll certainly be happy to know that on my X1000 with latest OS4 beta it's not the case anymore, so the problem surely was corrected (I'll check the bugtracker to see if there was an official report for it).

Thank you! You can also e-mail me privately, my address is in the readme file distributed with the plugins.

Indeed if then is a very good news !

Just as curiosity (after you finish your verification) would be interesting to know which specific gadget was involved into the freeze

button.gadget or speedbar.gadget ?

For my part, it's been a while since I had a freeze with ADRipper speedbar. On early versions there was a (buggy) feature built in the gadget that would change the window title to display the help text of a button being pressed, but it is no longer enabled now.

@centaurz

As a test did you try to insert a not rippable CD (for example a data disk with no music data) and then clicking on any button of the toolbar ?

It's not so scientific of course but i noted that freeze may (sometimes) happen using a "not correct CD" and then opening the prefs or clicking on somethings else on the toolbar

Also out of curiosity did you develop/use it on a Sam440 ?

I use your program on a Sam440ep Flex + OS 4.1 Update 4

At the end this is the only problem i have, all the other things/feature are working just fine, however as i use your program mostly everyday it's just a bit sad to avoid any time the toolbar with the big fear to loose my rip !

@ samo79

I confirm the bug, I have OS4.1.4 running on SamFlex, and tried any button which caused a total freeze.
