Software News   Software News : New version of Annotate released by OnyxSoft
   posted by Deniil715 on 27-Aug-2012 21:10:17 (8342 reads)
OnyxSoft finally releases Annotate v3.0 after years of delay!

Annotate v3.0 - Text editor well suited for programming small or medium projects.

- Completely rewrote Ed Exchange so it can now be used along-side the editor windows as a quicklist of editors.

- Added the setting to have a scrollbar on the right side.

- Implemented different mark modes: Ann, Notepad, Quick where NotePad makes Annotate's selection of text behave like "normal" text editors.

- Annotate can now open on a custom screen with a chosen backdrop image, or on the frontmost public screen.

- Added find/replace history so you can use up/down arrow keys to navigate old searches.

Due to many reasons Ann v3 has been delayed at least a year. I lost the will to code, Stefan lost the time to make the MOS port work (and it still doesn't), other stuff got in the way (MUI-OWB) etc. etc., but here it is anyway!

NOTE: This is the same version as the auto-update that has been out for a while now. Nothing new.

If you see a bug or have a suggestion, please don't hesitate to drop me an e-mail!

thanks! os3 version works under aros68k from command line as expected but crashes via icon, which is evidently aros68k bug. i think this will be another good compatibility test case to have ironed out. thanks guys!

@Deniil715

outstanding! i've been running this on my OS4 machines for a few days now, and it has easily become my favorite amiga text editor. thank you so much for continuing development!

Thanks Daniel, this was one of the best text editor out there and 3.0 is even better now, i've use it already since you release it via autoupdate but a full archive is way better

I would like to add that any free developer (that don't lack the time I'm currently do) using MorphOS is more than welcome to help out here =)
The sources (GPL) are also on the homepage.

The work should be minimal for an experienced developer IMO.

Already updated via autoupdate some days ago, but let me remark that this is my editor of choice on AmigaOS4, thank you!

@serk118
Apart from mistaking AROS for OS4 (from a quick glance), it now seems that I'm going to mistake AROS for MOS. Doesn't that theme break some MOS copyright?

I would much rather AROS try to stand on it's own feet, rather than try to ape another OS that is (in many but not all ways) better than it.

@chrish, im not sure what you want to attempt, everybody is free to use a skin he likes if it is freely available. kas1e has also showed off a mos theme on his os4 screenshots, especially those of mui owb. i dont remember anyone did, but maybe YOU have called him on that as well "aping an os that is in many ways better"?

Even Amikit (68k) includes different skins like one emulating AmigaOS or MorphOS. Beginning with Windows XP it is possible there too. I have never heard that "Themes" break copyrights. Or does the MOS-Team have software-patents like Apple?

"rather than try to ape another OS that is (in many but not all ways) better than it"

that sounds really silly...

wtf? Serk uses a theme he likes and it's "aping an OS"? I think you're grasping at straws here.

Personally I think the default look for MorphOS and AOS 4 suck. I would prefer if the distros would use something along the lines of shufflpuck's retrofunk theme.

ps does this version of xoops not support the img resize tags?

Text on selected window title is barely readable (black on black), bad design I think. Other than that it looks nice.

@terminills: great, maybe i dont need to finish my theme after all. it looks a little linuxish and window borders are still too thick, but other than that exactly my taste, especially the icons! that should be the default skin.

You can suggest it if you want Kalamatee to chase after you with a tack hammer. :P

ahh, the default theme is from kalamatee?? oh then i understand why he is pissed off by me. an artist cant stand criticism and i voiced it sure a little too loud.. to tell the truth im slowly accustomed to it, and thanks that aros68k video ive posted before it earned even some special applause comments on a polish portal. i have to keep in mind not to bait about in anymore.

@wawa
I'm afraid that I don't read every thread on AW.net (although perhaps you do?), but FWIW, I am also against having a MOS theme on OS4 (or an OS4 theme on MOS). That's just asking for trouble. I would much rather each Amiga-like OS have the confidence to be itself.

But AROS seems to have a less well-defined image than OS4 or MOS, for whatever reason.

P.S. It is well known that AROS is less well developed than MOS or OS4 (in many areas). But in many ways it is also catching-up quite fast (and currently ahead in 3D). I don't see any reason to pretend that is not the case.

It's just that if someone wants AROS to look like MorphOS, it feels (to me) like they really want to be using MorphOS (but can't or won't, for whatever reason). It is certainly misleading as hell, and I can't see them being happy about that, anymore than I would be happy about someone using an OS4 theme.

@OlafS25 Quote:

Copyrights are NOT magically excluded from Themes, just because people like to copy the look of other OSes. Here's a hint: Apple will come down like a ton of bricks on anyone distributing an OS-X-like theme. There are some still out there, but mainly just because Apple's lawyers didn't notice them.

I mean, if the MorphOS guys don't mind their OS carefully designed look from being copied, then there is no problem, but legally they could object. I would rather be respectful of MorphOS team's work, rather than risk upsetting them, even if it *was* legal (and it isn't without their permission).

A lot of people get away with copying the look of another OS, but that doesn't mean it's legal, any more than downloading pirated software is legal. But unless you are Apple there isn;t much money in it, so companies tend not to bother.
