Earlier today the SimpleMail development team released version 0.39 of the IMAP4 Amiga mailer. Supporting AmigaOS 3.x and AmigaOS 4.x systems the new version includes the following changes:

* Enhancement: Filter rules may be created now from attributes common in multiple mails
* Enhancement: Supports ATTACHMENT/K/M argument for both the command line and the MAILWRITE ARexx command
* Enhancement: Included more translations
* Bug fix: Fixed memory leak.
* Bug fix: Various multi selection problems

Additionally the YAM team has released version 2.8 of the venerable POP3-only mail client. A new identity system, performance improvements, and bug fixes are only some of the changes in this major release.

Thanks for Simple Mail update! All my accounts are IMAPs since I use them on 2 Macs and iPad!
I would love to have IMAP support on YAM too.

So which is better these days? YAM or SimpleMail?

I used YAM for a few years (around late 1990s or early 2000s) but eventually I had 10,000 Amiga emails and YAM would take about 30 minutes to load and completely fraggle my memory into 100,000 useless fragments and make the whole computer go in slow motion like Windoze XP. So I had to abandon YAM. This all happened many years before Chris Hodges saved the Amiga with TLSFmem util.

Did YAM ever fix their "spam the memory pool" coding technique?

Or would I be forced to try SimpleMail?

Or just stick with using Chrome or Firefox + Yahoomail on a bgcpc?

Hard to say for me what is better, Simple Mail I only test in first relase Yam using all the time from 1998 and is my favorite.Some things is missing but for me is number one for all OS! On AmigaOne and Mini + MOS Yam is very fast and that is what I need ..speed and simplicity...

Thanx for both SW!

In Yam would it be possible to don't have duplicate mails (avoid duplicates) in the lister when i don't delete them from the server?? Example Thunderbird checks if an email has already been downloaded or not, otherwise i get a lot of duplicate emails. I usually check my emails on several devices and i leave them on the server for about seven days before i delete them. Obviously the protocol that i use is POP because i don't have IMAP on my domain and i don't want to pay extras for it and above all Yam don't support it. Thanks in advance for reply.

Thanks =)

Did you use standard default mail settings or did you follow a guide on how to configure GMail for an imap client?

I have to use GMail for work and use Thunderbird to do so as I find the web interface is completly crap for work. From memory, GMail imap does not use the standard imap port of 143 but something like 933. Also, if you want to use their SMTP server, you will need to use SMTP auth.

And no, I do not currently use GMail with SimpleMail, I remember playing with it once in the past (a year or so back) but don't any more since I have setup my own mail server and use that instead now.

Simplemail is great but the Version-Number is a real "understatement"

Although I'm using YAM all these years, it's good to see SimpleMail progressing.

I do the same as you do by leaving my emails on the server for some time. Yam does check for duplicates so I don't get more than one downloaded. Obviously, set up your preferences the way you want.

@thread

Ouch! Yam 2.8 install crashes on my X1000. I'll have to investigate.

@Everblue

gmail and simplemail go together quite nicely. you don't need anything extra. here is how you can configure things to work:

1. log in to gmail with your web browser
2. click on 'settings' and then the 'forwarding and pop/imap' tab
3. make certain 'enable IMAP' is selected; click on 'save changes'
4. launch simplemail and select the 'configuration' menu item in the 'settings' menu
5. click on the 'accounts' pane and click the 'add account' button
6. fill in the details as follows:

Quote:
-> type is IMAP4
-> server is imap.gmail.com
-> the port should be 993
-> login is your complete email address, e.g., everblue@gmail.com
-> password is your normal gmail password
-> active should be enabled; secure should be enabled; with STLS should be enabled

-> SMTP server is smtp.gmail.com
-> the port should be 587
-> login is your complete email address, e.g., everblue@gmail.com
-> password is your normal gmail password
-> use SMTP AUTH should be enabled; secure should be enabled

7. click the 'save' button
8. click the 'fetch' button in the main window to start the account sync

let me know if this doesn't work for you. you should also require openSSL on your system, but that should have been installed already for you if you're using a web browser. have fun!

Thanks a lot, will check it out :) - I managed to do it with YAM using POP3 though, not Imap.
