Software News   Software News : RunInDOSBox r1 released for AmigaOS4, MorphOS & AROS

RunInDOSBox r1 released for AmigaOS4, MorphOS & AROS

RunInDOSBox allows double-clicked MS-DOS programs to be automatically redirected to run inside DOSBox. (This is not quite true for AROS users, who will need to either use eGame (or a shell script) to start MS-DOS programs.)

Click read more

Note that eGame is compatible with RunInDOSBox, and provides a quick way of starting your (MS-DOS) games, no matter which OS you use.

You can download RunInDOSBox from Aminet & OS4Depot.

How well does this work on an AmigaOne X1000, will it allow the PC versions of X-COM: Enemy Unknown and Terror From The Deep to run?

@Darrin
Both "UFO: Enemy Unknown" & "X-COM: Terror From The Deep" appear to be mostly 2D (isometric fake-3D) games, and so my guess is that they will be playable... but you would have to try them to know for sure!

There are some 2D games which are too processor intensive, while 3D games are almost always far too slow (Frontier: Elite 2 being an exception). Since our version of DOSBox only has interpreted CPU emulation (rather than JIT), the emulated machine effectively has a slow processor.

Sorry for being clueless as usual.

I am interested because there are some MS-DOS applications that it might be advantageous for me to run.

What kind of limits are there to what can be run? The particular application uses DMA on the parallel port. Is that supported?

@ggw
I am afraid that I don't know whether our port of DOSBox supports the parallel port, although I'd guess not.

Thanks to ChrisH for his work, other question, with this program we can play to classic MS-DOS games as Bball, and run DR-DOS?

Thanks Chris. I'll see if I can dig out my old PC DOS copies of those games.

I'm playing UFO Enemy unknown now on my PC via DOS Box (downloaded from Steam). I wonder how eay it would be to drag those files over to the Amiga...

@ChrisH

Thanks. Just curious though as to what the story with the AROS version is? What functionality does RunInDosBox have if a person needs to set up a script (which'd make the game/software launch under DosBox anyway).

Is it an Dosbox side problem for AROS as to why you cant double click an ms-dos executable with AROS, or something in AROS itself. Being that Im the AROS Dosbox maintainer Id be interested in that functionality for AROS too, so if I can help feel free to ask.

p.s. quick side note to anyone who uses AROS DOsbox:
dont use the version on aros-archives, its very out of date, and if Im not mistaken all distros come with at least official 0.74 anyway (apart from aspireOS which if memory serves me correctly uses a more current svn release build I did)).

I have not tried them, but I would guess that the answer is Yes...

RunInDOSBox removes the need for users to learn the intricasies of DOSBox's unix-style shell arguments, and avoids the need for them to mess with it's complex config file (as it comes with a fairly optimal one). So after installing RunInDOSBox the following command will launch almost any DOS program:

RunInDOSBox mygame.exe

It couldn't really be any simpler . Alternatively, you can make RunInDOSBox the tool of a project icon for the game, so no need to even create a shell script.

What AROS is missing is an easy way to add new "DefIcon" filetypes. At the moment one needs to compile a datatype descriptor for each new filetype, even if just matching filename patterns!

But I guess the simplest solution would be for someone to create an EXE/COM/BAT datatype descriptor for AROS, then RunInDOSBox would automagically work (since it already copies the required def_MSDOS.info file to EnvArc:Sys).

Perhaps someone should update that version then . I will try to remember to see where DOSBox might be installed on (IC)AROS, and see update my documentation.
