Nice one!

180? Yikes! I know I have over 100 but nowhere near that many!

Guess I need to work on the newer models instead

Well done Trevor, great read/information and cheers to those involved!

I've been to his house and I've seen them all. They occupy two (or is it three?) rooms, all arranged in steel-framed shelving. He can't turn on more than a few at a time, or else it blows the main fuse for the whole street

Seriously though, knowing what is coming through or planned on the hardware front the emphasis now needs to shift focus to software and content.

Now this remark should satisfy certain "eggheads" here (to borrow a phrase from ssolie)

Looking forward to new software projects announcements...especially concerning AOS 4.2

As far as we are aware the project has not been officially cancelled. However, we are now leaning in another direction altogether.

What does this bit of non-information mean anyway?

End user price much under £500 (VAT inclusive).

I think there are some red-faces around the old school negative town right about now... The pricing calculations have been accurate all along.

Fluffffffff that to that last Fluffffffff nay-sayer.

It means the netbook project is solely in the hands of Hyperion. It also means A-Eon doesn't want to do the netbook project and is instead looking at starting something else.

I just used more words.

Am I the only one who was a bit taken aback by this section:

Quote:
Also it did not help that Apple purchased P.A. Semi and closed down production and the prices of the CPU almost doubled. The initial costings were based on a CPU price of $500 each. Since Apple ceased production the CPU prices have varied between ~$600 and $1000 per unit.

Considering that Apple purchased P.A. Semi in early 2008, and in mid 2008 clearly stated that the CPU was EOL and that they bought the company for the talent, not the products --- how did this come as a surprise to a project started a year later?

@umisef:

Back in that period of Apple buying PA I did not follow the subject too closely as it did not concern me too much. However, I seem to remember that Apple did close down production sooner as expected / anticipated.

Also, while A-Eon was funded in 2009 I can imagine that at that point some work had been done already. Although mister Dickinson has done a lot for the Amiga-community, he clearly is not a fool so I guess that something must have been there already to convince him to join (or buy) the boat. This is pure speculation.

What I do know from my own experience is that large companies can act 'impulsive'. I've worked at a large healthcare company. A few years ago Intel announced that they would stop production of their 386 processor. That processor was used on a custom made motherboard which was at the heart of their product. As developing a new motherboard and implementing it would take a lot of time and money they decided to buy as much available 386 processors as possible. You can imagine some company or government using the PA processors acted in the same way leaving A-Eon without affordable processors.
