Software News   Software News : Turrican-inspired "GunLord" crowdfunding [indiegogo, 3DS/WiiU]
   posted by Turrican3 on 9-Sep-2013 16:54:05 (5222 reads)
Straight from the campaign homepage:

The epic 16 bit Run N Gun action game for two legendary game consoles, the Sega Dreamcast™ and NEO·GEO™ is now heading up to 3DS and WiiU. But we need your support first to develop the game for Nintendo platforms.

We will use this campaign to fund the dev kits, the re-programming and for paying an artist to draw additional graphics. For example some of the backgrounds need to get added pixels on each side to get from 304x224 to 400x240 pixels.

Gunlord is a "eurostyle platformer" with emphasis on exploring huge worlds and blasting off enemies...

This game features 10 stages of exciting 2D game play with over 45 unique enemy types. Blast yourself through giant landscapes, explore caverns and reveal tons of secrets!!

@Canfod

I would imagine because it is based on Turrican (probably the most well known platformer on the Amiga as well as pretty much every other system out at the time).

That said, I'd probably have to agree with ruben though, in that Hurrican was nicer to look at (and still retained the feel from the original games). I should probably go back and complete Hurrican at some point assuming I haven't lost my save now.

GunLord seems to take elements from all 3 Turrican games though, but I can't say I was too keen on that "bendy" beam weapon.

Nintendo is extremely rude and evil.

If you use your camcorder to record your child playing your game on your Nintendo game system connected to your TV running on your electricity in your home then Nintendo claims that the resulting video is OWNED by Nintendo.

If you place your video which you own, on the net, then the Nintendo lawyers will file fake DMCA takedown notices against you for posting pirated videos. They will ruin your reputation. And possibly get your webspace/account terminated for being a dirty pirate.

I will never donate any money to anything that would benefit Nintendo in any way, shape, form or fashion.

Nintendo is rampaging out of control.

@canfod

I thought it would help spreading the word on Amiga communities since, in my opinion, this is the platform the game really shone the most (even if C64 owners probably won't agree with me) and besides that, it was definitely quite popular back then.

Who knows?
After all the developers are from Germany... I don't recall right now the exact numbers but I'm reasonably sure between that and the UK it was among the countries where the Amiga was most successful.

And by the way the game itself (Turrican I mean) came from there, too!

Good game and probably the best Turrican clone around (seriously, am I the only one who thought Hurrican was mediocre at best? Plays more like Abuse than Turrican. Seems to me to parallel the artificial inflation of amiga game scores that used to happen towards the end of the amigas commercial software life).

Two things struck me as odd here though. Firstly, why not just simply add a few extra tiles on either side to fill the screen? No new graphics required, just needs to use 26 16x16tiles across the screen rather than 19.
And more importantly, why is a NeoGeo and Dreamcast game getting ported to the NintendoDS even a news item on an amiga site? Sure, a forum thread makes sense, but news item?

First there were foreign operating systems. Now AmigaWorld.net covers Japanese gaming consoles. I can't wait to see what's next - my bet is on rainbow shooting unicorns.

Jesus, guys... I get it, I really do: it's not your typical Amigaworld news article. :-\

I'm sorry if this somewhat caused bother or whatever else.

As you probably have guessed from the nickname I'm a huge Turrican fan: since this porting is not going to be made if the funding is unsuccessful I tried to go for the maximum possible visibility (ie as a news item), and luckily my news submission was deemed acceptable.

And as I already said, I just thought that given the popularity of the original game on the Amiga it would have been nice to let fellow users know about this game... the same way I did with the Turrican Soundtrack Anthology Kickstarter campaign last year.

@Turrican3

Is there any possibility to consider a port on AmigaOS4? I could provide an OS4 machine to the developers for such a project! And you would have as well more donations although more work as well.
Or maybe the developer could give the source to one of the talented Amiga devs here to make the port, I'm especially thinking about Huno or Andrea Palmaté responsible for so many great ports.
And you will make every people happy here as you have seen that a Nintendo related news is not always appreciated here

Well, at the time of reading it, it seemed to be an inappropriate story to be in the "News" section(seemed more appropriate to be in the forum discussions, rather than News, since it's not "news" about Amiga), but TBH, I recall finding out about the Kickstarter campaign for a PC re-release of Wings here(don't recall if it was in the News section, tho), and I was glad it was posted here, because I likely never would have known about it otherwise, so I can see why you'd post something about an old Amiga fave on another platform. Hopefully this old fave has better luck than Wings did.....

That's extremely nice to say the least, but obviously I have no idea, I'm not involved in this project.

My own guess, though:

1. this team apparently is quite comfortable with extremely low shipping/production runs: for example they's just made slightly more than 500 copies of "Last Hope", a Neo-Geo shooter game, so I believe this would fit nicely with the current AOS4 install base - that is, assuming it is technically feasible

2. a Classic version (ie OCS/ECS, or at least AGA) would almost certainly increase in a very significant way the targetable audience, but I believe it would need its own funding campaign anyway (ie separate from the current console one)

Exactly!
That was the expected (average) reaction I was aiming/hoping for.
