software OS4   software OS4 : AmigaOS4 skins released for free as .PSD file by Nykk Deetronic
   posted by djnick on 1-Jan-2014 22:41:28 (3816 reads)
Hello Amiga World.

I've decided to release Adobe Photoshop [.PSD] file with 6 groupped layers of AmigaOS4+ skins for free so one day programmers with free will and with lots of free time might implement my idea into AmigaOS4+ that failed in past 2 [or more] years. As you all know - I am not programmer and I was asking for help numerous times from AOS core programmers to help me implement those skins into the system - but all I received was response from few developers that AmigaOS is a very complicated system for skinning and any modification will require over a month of tweaking to get desired result based on my graphic suggestions. Colors pens are the biggest problem and they are working on it to find a solution.

Read more ---->

As I don`t have that [much] free time, I am donating my work in Adobe Photoshop .PSD format to Amiga community and hope that some day somebody will implement those skins the way I wanted during installation: [Let's imagine that my theme is named "Crystal":]

- Use Crystal theme settings for your MUI?
- Use Crystal theme for your AmiDock? [user's Amidock settings should be replaced to SYS: instead AmigaOS: [my setup] so other Amiga users will have the same graphics settings and icon sets like me - this is limit of Amidock program, and it works this way]
- Use Crystal theme for Filer program? [use colors or full Filer settings with matched colors from my theme sets palette]
- Use Crystal theme pointer graphics? [use my PNG pointers with dropshadow]. The same goes for Workbench TopBar - it must cast a dropshadow. For some reason I can't see / view it.
- Use Crystal's Black Theme for your Shell? [or other themes, if they are possible to create, so instead Black, there will be Gray, Dark Green, Dark Blue etc, as Shell background, with transparency, only if it is possible]
- Add MUI prefs to your MUI: directory? Prefs file will be called "Crystal.prefs".
- Add BootSound samples

During [let's say Crystal theme set] installation, programmed script should rename ALL users prefs to .old and copy Crystal's prefs instead.

I've included free fonts from www.dafont.com but HelveticaNeue isn't free [I was using for headers and text] so I couldn`t include them.

You are free to use my themes into AmigaOS implementation if you like them but you will need to credit me somewhere in documentation:

A news item, seriously? There's already a thread for this. I suggest to at least tone done the language somewhat, and remove some of the obvious bullshit from the text.

The "for free" remark is an insult to everybody who donated for this guy's SAM. So is putting the blame for not releasing anything worthwhile on the community ("everybody knew I'm not a programmer", "asked for help numerous times").

I know AW is short on moderators, but this is getting ridiculous. I volunteer for taking care of further djnick issues - this guy needs to be dealt with.

Please suggest a 'relevant phrase' to replace 'for free' which applies to everyone that did not donate.

So nice to see you chose to release this in as non amiga format as you could find. really helpful for those of us who only use amigas.

to be honest i had similar problem with aros, i did a simple skin for, just to discover that skinning system wasnt working consistently except for the genuine skin that has been bent to work, and insisting on fixing the issue led finally to a flame war;).

on the other hand djnick has asked for and been proposed help numerous times in several months intervals. even i proposed help and been answered that he was just about to solve it and he therefore doesnt need assistance.

now judge for yourself, but in my book the insanity of the wannabe "amiga" community has broke through all barriers. hard even to witness it.

You're absolutely right, this is bullshit and djnick(ed) has been taking people for a ride for what, a year now?

Are these the same individuals that insist all Amiga websites run in iBrowse? Cmon without feeling the need to poll the entire Amiuniverse I am fairly certain that 99.99% of Amiga users also own a PC or Mac.

Besides GIMP which is also available for Amiga via AmiCygnix is capable of opening most Photoshop files.

Even if loaded It does not look correct in Gimp For windows, you will need Photoshop.

Djnick art work looks nice, but I'm afraid this want do, converting this into a theme will not be a easy job.

Yes, because there are lots of layers with non-destructive effects. Thats why I can`t use Gimp - it just won`t display PSDs with effects.

Anyway, here is other download link than DropBox's one:

@Wawa

I know you had some "emotional" discussions with a certain developer. I had similar discussions too but I do not contribute because of or despite certain persons. I simply ignore it then. Dropping the platform and talking only negativ about all the people is not the best reaction. Search for the people who are kind and then work together and ignore the others and do not let you spoil the fun.

@thread

Just a general comment. The reaction because some bounties failed to deliver by some is not donating anymore. That is the wrong conclusion in my view. People should not donate because of "excitement" but think how realistic the bounty is, where it is hosted and who takes it (history to deliver something). So if you donate something to people that never contributed anything and do it without setting conditions you end like this. Donating hardware makes no much sense, instead people should think about buying 1-2 systems that are lent to developers for certain tasks and amount of time and then given back.

@rebraist

Sure. If you can do it for Aros then Amiga "core" developers must do their basic homework.

@olaf
im just telling how it is as always. since ive got a residency in italy i will not have much possibility to follow or help out the next few months. and i think it is convenient not because of anybody personally but because of general state of affairs.

@rebraist

if he had released it earlier, id definitely had take a look at that just for the sake of it, as i proposed. alas aros themeing parameters are currently probably just as broken as os4 ones, which makes themes that differ much from the default one hard to introduce (resizing the elements for example). and this is why the most themes look rather alike.

but then themeing as such is not that difficult. you have just to cut out the elements of the psd image trying to do that consistently and save them in a format that themeing system understands (preferably png) in the appropriate folders leaving out the file extension. almost everybody can do that after studying existing themes and their parameters a little. good luck.

I can´t really complain because I never got the point of this djnick-bounty (and therefore I didn´t make a donation), but in the meantime (in combination with the x1000-exhchange with vox) it has turned into a tragic comedy.

In the worst case people will stop to donate because of this, which isn´t good.

This bounty was a joke from the very start and it's horrible that so many put their cash in. For themes... Personaly I'm happy with the default theme and the options already available. I don't find MacOS X that appealing at all, grey and black... yeah... positive colours... or not.

The theme that was created looked like... well... I don't use it ;) . I got the idea and it was... kind of... well...... no it wasn't that good.

Give a computer to someone to create themes... I just can't believe that people contributed to it. It's easy to be a smart ass now but it did smell fishy even then. Kas1e got a big mouth and I don't really trust him to be honest. I do appreciate the work that's been done but there seems to be a bit too much talk about money all the time. I don't like that. I get the feeling that he's (and others) trying to squeeze the community on what money there are left. Horrible thing to say and I sure hope that I'm wrong.

Port Odyssey 1.9... give them a taste... 1.16... keep the trust... 1.2x... haha yeah right...
