software Classic   software Classic : A-EON Technology Acquires Personal Paint
posted by amigakit on 27-Nov-2014 15:33:19 (22966 reads)
A-EON Technology is pleased to announce that it has taken over the development of Personal Paint from Cloanto. The two companies had already started to cooperate in 2014 which resulted in the release of Personal Paint 7.2 and 7.3. These are the first new versions for several years, with the latest native versions available now on AMIStore for both AmigaOS 4.1 and AmigaOS 3.x.

As part of the agreement A-EON will exclusively develop and own all future AmigaOS versions of Personal Paint (including possible MorphOS and AROS ports). Additionally, A-EON and Cloanto will share joint ownership of Classic Amiga versions up to version 7.2, while Cloanto may continue to work on future non-Amiga versions.

Matthew Leaman, A-EON Managing Director, said, "A-EON Technology is proud to conclude this agreement with Cloanto. Personal Paint always had a strong following with Classic Amiga users and we are excited to drive it's future." Trevor Dickinson, A-EON’s co-founder added, "I've been an avid user of Personal Paint for many years. It became the leading easy-to-use Amiga program for bitmapped graphics and animation and was one of the first to support AGA and RTG graphics. These advanced features allowed Personal Paint to replace Deluxe Paint in Commodore's Amiga computer software bundles."

Personal Paint was the first commercial Amiga graphics program to break the 2Mb chip RAM barrier and to support PowerPC CPUs. However, it also included numerous other unique features which made it a favourite with many Classic Amiga owners. These included: professional colour reduction and merge, multiple brushes, filters, animation, file format plugins and stereograms together with PostScript and 24-bit printing. The constant reinvention of the possible applications of animated GIFs (also thanks to the expiration of related patents) helped drive continued demand for Personal Paint's exceptional support for palette based modes and optimised GIF code.

Cloanto's Michael C. Battilana commented on the transfer, "I am delighted to see future Amiga Personal Paint development efforts in the hands of an extremely motivated and talented team. I would also like to pay special thanks to Trevor. Without his generous commitment, the Amiga community wouldn't be as alive and kicking as it still is today."

ArtEffect is supposed to be coming in an OS4 native version. IIRC Stefan Robl was working on it initially, but I was told many years after he departed that a release was still planned. Don't know if that still holds, it's been a very long time especially since it was shown working. Pagestream is also still being worked on, I think there was an update on that recently, can't remember now.

I'd like to see Photogenics and Wordworth updated and ported to OS4. Wordworth I think is in 68k asm so unlikely to ever be native (but an update would be nice), Photogenics I'm not sure about but it definitely needs some bugfixes if nothing else.

I cant really see why Amiga users expects everything to be freely available for an unlimited period of time.
Maybe why no developers stick around?

zzd10h recived a similar reaction to his program pack, so not really suprised.

The difference is zzd10h pulled software that was always intended to be free, whereas PPaint's Aminet release was more of a free gift, as it has always been a commercial product. It doesn't make sense to leave it there if they're trying to sell an updated version.

I can see the reasoning for both, although I agree more with the PPaint removal.

The headline of the official press release doesn't "celebrate that fact" either?

You obviously thought that the Aminet removal news was more important than a new Classic version being developed. Why advertise a negative headline when the news is very positive for Classic users?

now, there was a free version of commercial software. it has now been withdrawn. there is polish saying " him, who gives and then demands gifts back.." i think i dont need to complete the sentence, do i?

it would make sense to leave it as a teaser, as it is widely practiced. but in order for it to make sense is that the commercial version provides significant additional features.

Is it? What's the price for the 68k version? What are the new features? And, last but not least: How would a 68k user get his hands on it without purchasing OS 4.1 first?

All we know about the 68k release of 7.3 is that you apparently think it wouldn't sell enough if the 20 year old 7.1 release was still available for free download. Maybe you have a different definition of "good news"?

You were given the chance to provide input to my news item - you chose not to. Now it's too late, sorry.

Who doesn't have Personal Paint already? I have it on CD and should have 2 magic pack copies somewhere. I've no doubt that the people making the fuss do too, although I'm sure I'll be told that's not the point.

edit

It won't stop me buying a copy of the latest version either.

Wait a little bit longer for AmiStore/OS3 or buy AF with 7.2?

+1+1+1
as good as personalpaint is (or was)... but a more modern software like arteffect or pagestream would have been much better imho.
the current status of pagestream is a shame. it was (and still is) such a nice and good program. i really liked to use it. the latest (beta) versions are next to unusable unfortunately.
but it really was fun to design some pages/documents and have them printed high quality. really.

regards...
michael

Wont Personal Paint and Sketchblock compliment eachother in that regard?

I see people call for mainstream software, but Sketchblock seems to come along nicely.

@amigakit

Are there any differences between OS3 and OS4 versions of 7.3? I wonder which to choose. I may also buy both if there is reasonable discount.

No differences between the new builds for OS 3 and OS 4 versions except they are natively compiled for 68K and PPC respectively.

If you buy the OS 3 version on AMIStore for full price, the OS 4 version is discounted by 33% and vice versa.

Really guys, this is good news!

Earlier this year we commissioned Andy Broad to complete the first update to Personal Paint for many years. He did an excellent job which resulted in a new 68k version Personal Paint 7.2 which Cloanto bundled with its latest Amiga Forever release. As part of the agreement with Andy, he also worked on a major upgrade of Personal Paint for both the Classic AmigaOS and a native PPC version for AmigaOS 4.1. These are now available to purchase through AMIstore.

In case you missed the news, the Personal Paint 7.3 Classic (and PPC) version has the following features:-

● Works with the Classic AmigaOS and AmigaOS4.1 and and emulation under WinUAE and Amiga Forever
● Totally integrated with the AmigaOS Workbench
● Supports AmigaOS screen dragging
● Smoother interaction with the OS4 screen dragging system
● True colour animation frame thumbs in the StoryBoard window
● High resolution gadget imagery and thin borders style GUI option for a more modern look
● 9 new built in brush shapes
● 100 new Custom Brushes
● Pressure sensitive drawing
● Dithered transparency
● New Airbrush Linemode
● Extended paint functionality with image processing tool

Our acquisition of the rights to Personal Paint means that we will continue with its ongoing development in the future. Also we will make historical version of Personal Paint available for free download.

TrevorD

Note: AMIstore for AmigaOS3.1 should be available soon. Two more weeks come to mind.

I really really hope that old version will be available from web for everyone even if being on other servers, and not requiring internet connection and store app.

Many Amiga users don't have network connection on their Amigas and there are many retro users who just want to be productive and use computers in oldskool way without net. For example most of demosceners just run certain apps on plain systems for pixeling, music making and coding. They won't bother for network card and extra stuff to run store programs. And opposite to other scenes, demoscene has steady count of newcomers from other platforms to Amiga too. It's been easy for them to grab PPaint from Aminet, and what would be better advertisement than their work? Amiga has always been famous of its pixel artwork. Old version available easily for everyone would be a good demo and drag people to buy newer versions more than having everything hidden to some app which would be like shooting your own leg.

Sorry, I could help pointing out that to access the web means you need an internet connection.

I've purchased Personal Paint with the Amiga Magic pack. Do I need to buy the new version separately or is there a free upgrade?

Quote:
there is polish saying " him, who gives and then demands gifts back.."

"Freely you have received, freely you shall give" comes to my mind in bit dufferent sense than the original context that since you got it for free (to aminet), so what if you need to give it back free as well. (from aminet to AEON).

But to look it otherwise too. I have also felt that people tend to be greedy. If you dont pay from it you dont value it, and when you get something, you tend to take it for granted that it is your right to have it always.

If you received a physical item, then your polish saying isnt that bad, since you might actually be counting on having that item and have invested time and effort on it etc.

But in case of PPaint, the idea is that you were able to copy it from certain destination for free. If you didnt take it when it was free, then that is your own shame, and i dont think that polish saying is meant for Ppaint kind of case.

Even if Aeon havent pulled Ppaint back, it could have happened, that whole Aminet went down, and you would be in same situation still, that you wouldnt be able to get free Ppaint anymore.

Plus, I would like to point out Back2roots.org, It has lots of commercial Amiga games in there for free. However, most of the games have been given exclusively to back2roots, not to aminet, not for you to spread around etc.

reason why they are doing it that way is, that at point back2roots have asked them, they havent seen any commercial value on their games, and they have wanted to serve public, but in case situation changes and they suddenly become valueable again (like have happened before with for example with both silent era as well as black and white movies), then they have reserved the right to have possiblity to pull it back from back2roots. This is normal business sense.

And if you look at today, suddenly Amiga Games have got value again for example thorugh Amiga incs Amiga games attempt, and you can also notice that they are actually selling emulated cinemaware games now at goodoldgames.com.

Hence having done this way in the first place to give aminet PPaint for free for now, makes perfect commercial sense.

It also makes perfect commercial sense for AEON to pull it off from aminet as well as (possibly) put the free versions available from their own servers, since then they get traffic to their own sites, where they can also market their own products, like current commercial versions of PPaint or even other stuff they are selling.

As example me myself. I currently dont use amistore, nor do i visit Aeons website almost never. Why? Because I havent seen any reason to do so.

However, i was only this week looking for PPaint (you can even see i asked about that in another - ppaint7.2 - topic), and had i knew right away that AEONs website had been hosting PPaint there, i would have simply went there and grabbed it for my amikit, and they would have had chance to market me to for example downlaod Amistore by telling me it is so much easier to install PPaint through Amistore and i could also get all other useful stuff from there for so easy.

But now they missed that chance, why? because they pulled that aminet version and made ppaint available from their website too late.

And actually, Aminet missed me too, since i didnt know previous ppaint version had been available from there until this topic informed me it had been took off.

But all in all wawa, really. Someone decides to give you something for free for now and reserves the right to pull it off, and since they didnt use that right until 15? years later, is that really so bad thing? Now which ones the bad guy, the one who feeds for free, or the one who complains when he doesnt get the free meal anymore?
