software Classic   software Classic : A-EON Technology Acquires Personal Paint
   posted by amigakit on 27-Nov-2014 15:33:19 (23098 reads)
A-EON Technology is pleased to announce that it has taken over the development of Personal Paint from Cloanto. The two companies had already started to cooperate in 2014 which resulted in the release of Personal Paint 7.2 and 7.3. These are the first new versions for several years, with the latest native versions available now on AMIStore for both AmigaOS 4.1 and AmigaOS 3.x.

As part of the agreement A-EON will exclusively develop and own all future AmigaOS versions of Personal Paint (including possible MorphOS and AROS ports). Additionally, A-EON and Cloanto will share joint ownership of Classic Amiga versions up to version 7.2, while Cloanto may continue to work on future non-Amiga versions.

Matthew Leaman, A-EON Managing Director, said, "A-EON Technology is proud to conclude this agreement with Cloanto. Personal Paint always had a strong following with Classic Amiga users and we are excited to drive it's future." Trevor Dickinson, A-EON’s co-founder added, "I've been an avid user of Personal Paint for many years. It became the leading easy-to-use Amiga program for bitmapped graphics and animation and was one of the first to support AGA and RTG graphics. These advanced features allowed Personal Paint to replace Deluxe Paint in Commodore's Amiga computer software bundles."

Personal Paint was the first commercial Amiga graphics program to break the 2Mb chip RAM barrier and to support PowerPC CPUs. However, it also included numerous other unique features which made it a favourite with many Classic Amiga owners. These included: professional colour reduction and merge, multiple brushes, filters, animation, file format plugins and stereograms together with PostScript and 24-bit printing. The constant reinvention of the possible applications of animated GIFs (also thanks to the expiration of related patents) helped drive continued demand for Personal Paint's exceptional support for palette based modes and optimised GIF code.

Cloanto's Michael C. Battilana commented on the transfer, "I am delighted to see future Amiga Personal Paint development efforts in the hands of an extremely motivated and talented team. I would also like to pay special thanks to Trevor. Without his generous commitment, the Amiga community wouldn't be as alive and kicking as it still is today."

Christoph,

As I posted above, 68K users will be able to purchase the latest 7.3 upgrade via Amistore and the new features are also listed. Since AMIStore is not yet available for Classic users we are arranging for AmigaKit to stock a new retail version and we will make a Digital ADF Classic AmigaOS version available on the Amistore website. (Details to be provided).

BTW I did contribute to your news item and I was also a little surprised by your headline, but never mind that now, I just want to re-confirm that earlier Classic versions of Personal Paint will be available to download free of charge from the A-EON server.

I really really hope that old version will be available from web for everyone even if being on other servers, and not requiring internet connection and store app.

Today you can download X program from aminet or any site with the PC/mac, save it to a floppy, SD or whatever and install it on the amiga.

and what was exactly the reason to remove the download from aminet, if it doesnt collide with what aeon intends to do?

@jpv

MEGAQUOTE!

Lots of good sense in your post.

Can't agree more or suggest better than as you did with your comment...

@wawa

I am with your points too...

And personally on PC I am using DeLuxe Paint clone called ProjectDogwaffle (now PD Pro).

It is stable at version 9.2 or 9.5 but they leave free for download version 1.2 with only limit of saving in TARGA fileformat.

Why? So people could download and test how is good their program and could then purchase it.

Last week I had pleasant surprise that they give free version 8 of program for people who don't use PDPro for commercial purposes.

They are very smart and aggressive with their free software campaign in order to enter the market of PC Paint software that is really sature, and I want to see such a behaviour from an Amiga firm...

Else this move could be perceived as nothing than greedy, and maybe worse, as removing PPaint from Aminet, it could give false impression to public that A-EON is not sure that their new software release is a "real" advance from 7 and offers "real" benefits than older version that was freely available, so they removed it to make impossible to new customers to make comparisons between old free version and new commercial one.

I don't want to believe that Trevor Dickinson wants to give this awful impression to public.
He always acted as good guy and smart enterpreneur.

Which is exactly the way he wants it to stay like.

But this would not be the case if A-Eon decides to lock the download inside their proprietary AmiStore program, forcing the user to run the software on an Amiga or AmigaOne with an internet connection, register a store account, enter credit card details to make a "purchase" for something at a price of zero as is often the case in such environments, etc. (I have not had the chance to try out the store software myself yet, tbh :) )

I am sure that A-Eon does not wish to generate such unnecessary bad PR though. A good approach would be to provide a normal HTTP/FTP download and also a PPaint.txt on Aminet with this URL and information on how to obtain newer versions of the software.

Install WinUAE and install OS3.5/3.9 on your PC, Download the files using AmiStore 68k version and then copy the SDCARD or Floppy, if you insist on doing the hard-way on your PC/Mac, or upgrade you classic Amiga to get online, that's that simple.

Way you need a PC to get online in 2014, when you can do it on Amiga, is beyond me, we have good web browsers NetSurf and OWB they work fine on AmigaOS.

@all the moaners and whingers...

Rant mode = on

GET A LIFE GUYS.

This is a 'good thing'. So what if A-EON want to host the program they own on their servers? The only problem I can see is for people who use classic amigas only who don't own or have access to a windows/mac/linux/android device as they're stuffed when it comes to accessing the site.

I hope they carry on. Personally I'd like to see native versions of TVPaint and ADPro and updated to use more formats, eg. png.

@djnick

If you like adobe style software please stay on osx or windows and leave the amiga alone.

I hate adobe and their awful programs, their instance that you upgrade all the time (even if it means you have to buy new hardware to do so). A-EON support the classic systems, if they ran the business like adobe you would all be forced to buy X1000's if you wanted to run their 'free software'.

Rant mode = off

Trevor Dickinson from A-EON states that they "plan to offer free downloads of historical Classic versions in the future".

Well, why don't leave it on Aminet if they intend to release it freeware in the future.?
And why in the Future if it was already freeware from many years on Aminet?

This is an unclear operation on a freeware software that A-Eon declares it will be released freeware like it was now!

this in not the problem. the problem is removing the download available elsewhere.

That is not a problem, it is the copyright owners choice. Name any other business that would not take down a 'free' product they own from a third party website to host it on their own site, still for free and generate more site hits? Most would take down the old version and lose it so people have to buy the latest version. A-EON is a business not a hobby, treat them as such.

What about 1 to 6? what if your 7, 8 ,9 whatever version becomes corrupted? can you still get the old archives easily? but that's not the point. adobe do nasty things like flash... I have 10.x on my mac but as soon as 10.x+1 came out (that no longer supported ppc) every flash website stopped working, even sites that hadn't updated anything for years and happily posted that you need version 8 to use this site. forcing the user to upgrade is very bad specially when the vast majority of sites would still work quite happily.

An 'Industry Standard' just means they're the biggest bully in the playground who wants to take your lunch money.

It was already available for free, from Aminet. So why remove it in this case? Clearly you are giving a false reason. At least it would have made sense to upload it to the A-EON server *before* deleting it from Aminet.

Anyway, it's still available here: ftp://ftp.exotica.org.uk/mirrors/aminet/biz/cloan/PPaint.lha Get it while you can because I believe A-EON are lying and it will never be offered as a free download.

Sorry, I could help pointing out that to access the web means you need an internet connection.

I also said "AND store app". And naturally many users access the web with their main system, which in most cases isn't the classic Amiga, and they transfer the files with CF cards etc to the Amiga. So far it's been looking like that Amistore isn't going to be available on all platforms, for example to mainstream operating systems, but correct me if that's a wrong impression.

@Minuous

It is not nice to talk in these terms to people who are investing their time to do something for the Amiga's world, don't you ?

>You are really not serious are you?

I was, but that was according to the logic of "if they wanted continuous availability of it, why would they delete it from Aminet now, when they aren't hosting it at their site now?" But you say in the amiga.org thread that the deletion was Cloanto's fault, which changes the situation. Therefore, I have no reason not to believe you now. We will see if it ever appears on the A-EON site, I'm not sure why the delay...

And of course, if it will require a specific app/OS (eg. AmiStore app, running on only certain platforms) and/or credit card number to download, that's not really freely available.

>investing their time to do something for the Amiga's world

And I'm not doing the same?

It's "not nice" to remove software from public file repositories without notice. It seems I was blaming the wrong company, as mentioned above. But surely you can concede that the Amiga community is entitled to be angered when software disappears from public file repositories like this, regardless of the reasoning. Cloanto were happy to take the acclaim when they uploaded it to Aminet, there was no mention that it was just a temporary measure until they decided they wanted to gouge the community some more.

It's good to have the peace of mind that files on Aminet and OS4Depot, especially those that have been there for years, will remain available for the forseeable future. This is so that every user doesn't have to download the whole thing as a preemptive measure, which is impractical on a limited connection and probably expensive to the repositories involved.

I just hope the new free download won't require any app (store) or account and will be as easy as to download than the aminet one (ie: an open site, a download link: you're done).
