Software News   Software News : Odyssey Web Browser Public Source Code Repository
posted by deadwood on 6-Jan-2016 18:44:55 (9181 reads)
I would like to invite interested developers from all platforms to join the Odyssey Web Browser development.

The repository is public, available to everyone and located on GitHub:

https://github.com/deadwood-pl/OdysseyWebBrowser

The repository contains the latest version of Odyssey (1.25) which:

- is a continuation of Fab's 1.24 code base
- is rebased directly on WebKit engine (no longer uses Orygin proxy layer that 1.24 used) for easier integration of new engine versions
- uses WebKit revision 187682 (end of July version)
- is rebuild to support multi-platform development in build configuration and source code

If you are interested in developing a feature in Odyssey, no matter how small, or fixing a bug, no matter how trivial, contact me via email at deadwood@wp.pl. Don't worry - everybody had to start somewhere! I will help you understand the code base, build process and development approach.

Please spread the news

I think projects like that just too big, its nightmare to setup the cross compiler.
Maybe I try to compile it if got preconfigured VirtualBox Linux image with everything.

The big solution a big bounty to develop the browser for all systems, not only for onem AROS, MorphOS or AmigaOS4.x. And a serious bounty.

@NutsAboutAmiga

Exactly. Setting up the compiling environment and get it to work is usually a lot more work than fixing whatever bug, or add whatever feature I like to fix/add.

If someone can make a working click-to-install package, or maybe a complete Linux distro with all the shit it might be worth taking a look at it.

OS4 Odyssey is starting to show its age more and more. I'd rather have a slow but new JS engine than one that doesn't work at all.

How much community should prepare cash for this? Developing browser from scratch or port something else not based on WebKit?

Seriously?

After Amizilla (allegedly some 12000 Euro), Sputnik (3050 Euro), Timberwolf (7000 Euro), Odyssey (7500 Euro + donations to kas1e for two ports) you really think throwing money at this will solve the problem?

Odyssey will be not outdated if somone will deal with JS big endian problems. It for sure much better than to recreate wheels with new browsers. There is anyway only one deserve be normal browser : netsurf port by chris, but lacking html5 and js .. it will take again years. Only solution is to fix JS endian issues.

The problem is who make the port? Also you don't forget the port of VPDF from MorphOS to AmigaOS 4.x, never realesed but neither returned the money to donors.

Good question how we can find guy that can fix JS. The best when it will be fixed in official WebKit, not only for our systems? And true Odyssey is very good program it will be nice to continue work on it.

NetSurf is missing HTML5 and JS only in our world or in other systems as well?

Finally someone talking some sense. It's baffling why everyone suddenly wants to port new browsers, instead of fixing the existing one.

Odyssey is based on the Webkit engine, which is the biggest and most up-to-date engine on the planet.

As kas1e pointed out, it's an endianness issue - their JS compiler doesn't support PPC. You're going to hit that problem with pretty much any engine sooner or later.
