Amigaworld.net News   Amigaworld.net News : Odyssey Web Browser Endianess Bounty Open
   posted by Raffaele on 8-Feb-2016 13:10:15 (6962 reads)
Hello dear fellows Amigans!

It took to me some amount of time to understand how to create Bounty on BountySource and I must first join Deadwood Odyssey Web Browser project on GitHub, in order to create an official ISSUE report, but at least I succeded.

(Without official issue report from developers site, BountySource does not start any bounty! Strange but true!)

Now Bounty is Open!

https://www.bountysource.com/issues/30646188-odyssey-web-browser-solve-ppc-webkit-javascript-engine-endianess-problems-inherited-from-webkit-x86

This is truly a call to arms for all us Amigans!

Donate to let developers being awarded for solve all endianess issues that afflict PPC Odyssey Web Browser Webkit Javascript Engine.

A browser flawlessly working is necessary condition to let PPC processors continue being used as productive desktop machines!

I created the bounty and just starting collecting money by donating the first 10 US$.

Now it is up to you to let our platform survive!

Donate! Donate! Donate!

Webkit Javascript Engine for PPC has a great number of endianess issues, so we need a skilled developer (or a joint team of developers) to perform a hunt search&destroy party of all issues by finding it one by one. It is a tedious job to do, so it needs to be properly rewarded by a reasonable amount of money, hence the cration of this bounty. If we Amigans want next release of Odyseey Web Browser being usable with all sites featuring new versions of Javascript, we need: 1) Skilled developers to get this task assigned. Are you there? We need also... 2) Money to keep alive our platform, so donate, donate, donate!

is this the bounty description text? did you consult this with anyone? where/what are the exact conditions for the bounty to be considered fulfilled and to be paid out?

the description is so unprecise that Deadwood certainly is not involved. The nice thing... it can easily be paid out without violating rules because of the unprecise definition...

which version of webkit, how is it tested that it works, how is code integrated in official svn or the version deadwood is working on?

Deadwood tried to create one bounty to remove endian issues but no interest so it was not proposed

also, who is in charge to decide that the money is to be paid out? is there any info on that? i think it is mandatory. we know that power2people has a strict and dependable procedure on that, we know who is in charge, and it always has been handled the right way.

@wawa
That bounty will fail, at least in that form. Anyone who send money for that one, on their own. Imho money will collect dust. Problems with that bounty from Rafaell:

1. no person who agree to works on
2. its is not power2people involved, so we don't know how things will be done
3. there is no final summ known, as there is no developer who know how much he want
4. fail , sorry :)

while this is apparently only someone elses individual initiative.

Yep, no one was involved even for discussion about. Fail :)

Sure none involved in it. I even first time heard about it too. That bounty will fail, as it all done wrong :)

@thread

As usual Amiga users start blabbering instead than taking action.

Well I took the action and started bounty.

If we continue talking without starting concrete actions we will end in going nowhere...

Are you unsure what version of Webkit supporting? Well it is up to developers keeping the repository decide what release to support.
They will communicate it to community and I will indicate it in the bounty references... It is just a matter of logging in and edit some text...

Are you afraid that solving the issues will benefit AmigaOS camp over MorphOS or vice-versa? Then ask developers to be sure their efforts in resolving Javascript issues will be machine indipendent or easily replicable from a system to another. It is easy if you start a joint effort between camps.
If you continue spreding zealot hate between users of different flavours of AmigaOS it will end only in a general battle-royale with no any winners, and we will keep all issues still alive and making impossible developing any further release of Odyssey!!!

Do you want developers being interested in get the job assigned? Then give them a reason to spend their precious time in solving this issue, by collecting enough money to reward their effort.

Are you complaining that Bounty description and bounty terms are too vague?

Well I could edit it anytime with the help of Deadwood and/or Kas1e and/or Fab, by just logging in and edit the description text...

There is no impossible solution and no extreme difficulties. It is just a matter of good will, and the patience to edit things any time it will be necessary...

So then, are we capable to stop this endless nonsense chatting and being united at least one time for the sake of the platform?

we are all in your debt. but did it really take all these weeks of your hard work to put together these few emotionally loaded phrases that serve as bounty description?

have you talked to them in advance? or to someone else in question? (there are people like olaf around here experienced with succesful bounties) seems it occures to you just now that you could have. because once a bounty is opened and the people have donated towards it, it would be very questionable to alter its conditions.

A worsely written bounty I never read. As a user I would not contribute to it, as a developer I would not deveope towards it. It has no clearly defined goals. It doesn't even explain what the issue to be solved is in precise terms.

Are these endianess issue bugs to be fixed or a complete drop / removal of support by the upstream developers? The first is doable I'd think the second would be a much bigger amount of work, and long term maintenance night mare.

It makes you wonder why the description written by deadwood wasn't used:

As usual, there are plenty of critics and few participants. BSzili has provided a link that might be a good starting point. Raffaele has stated that he can edit the bounty and I think it can be improved with some help.

Great, you are Amiga Hero now. Take some of this criticism and try to understand it as you lack of humility.

@Raffaele
I give you a ++ for initiative and suggest you check out the link that BSzili provided. Maybe if you open a topic here at AW and post some proposed changes, some knowledgable people can suggest some additional helpful changes, additions etc. that you can add to your original post. If it just turns info another critic fest, then you'll know it's hopeless and we'll never see an updated Odyssey.

if you give him a++ for this initiative (strangely forgetting who actually deserves credit for bringing up the original bounty idea along with a valid description, none of you expressed interest in) and consider this thread a critic fest, then why sou you even propse to change the content of the bounty? i mean if we are all wrong nitpicking then go ahead, dont listen to us.

I talked to Deadwood the other week and he is not interested in fixing the big endian issue, bounty or no bounty.

@Rafaele

I suggest that you remove the name "AmigaOS" because, if I understand correctly, this is a problem for ALL bigendian platforms.

@thread

Did you read about the PPC port of v8?

I think most of us know about the PPC V8, but unless you volunteer to port it along with Blink, it's not relevant to the current discussion.

Why it was specifically addressed to Odissey, while we are speacking of a worldwide product (webkit) problem that should be intersest of other ppc comunities to be solved.
In this way we are limiting the userbase from which get the moneys.

looking forward we do need to solve this problem, for me a modern working Web browser is a must on any platform. For now Odyssey is working fine but my worry is will it be in 5 years time if it doesn't get another update?

However I agree with most of the above, the key current developers should of got together and discussed what it will take to solve the problem. I'm hoping at the very least this bounty gets the discussion going, maybe the money could be just paid out and moved to Power2people if developers are not happy with this one. So I'm holding off backing this until these issues are hopefully sorted.

I agree that we should make this a non-Amiga thing as this problem affect all PPC systems. I bet some PPC Mac users would be interested as well, and maybe they even have someone willing to take the bounty.
