Thanks for this podcast. I had the idea to interview Jim myself but never found the time or motivation. So I'm happy you did it.
Great job!

In the end these are just words, nothing concrete at all, their vision was just a Linux box period. You can buy them since a long time so nothing has been missed.

I told you so ...

at least nothing special for the hardware,
no new AmigaOS based on AOS3.1,
no ECS, AGA or AAA

New proprietary video standards would not have mattered anyways, but a new OS would have been awesome.

Good interview, thanks.
I always had a nice feeling about Collas but back then I really did not like the Linux route, I'd much rather see AmigaOS kernel ported to PPC and enhanced.

Looking back now and seeing where we are today the Linux route might not have been such a bad idea. It would have meant readily available HW at low cost, presumably top notch classic emulation and an Amiga OS based on Linux that I might have accepted if Linux had been hidden from my sight.

Wow really long podcast:

Amiga / Gateway:

OS = Linux + a new desktop.
Amiga Objects = Amiga Anywhere (AmigaDE).
Store = Amiga Store / Appel Pay / Google App Store.
Hardware:
CPU = Motorola PowerPC or TransMeta – No conclusion.
GFX, Sound, etc = Off the shelf, main stream products.

A bit like google, or apple.

Really a long way off, when it came to OS.

I liked Jim too, and listening to that podcast I can tell that he was trying to enact a good technology strategy whilst still pleasing the existing community. I remember being excited about AmigaOE but slightly disappointed about the Linux base. If you look at what Apple have done with OSX, that's largely what Gateway-Amiga would have done with AmigaOE (ie. more Amiga, less Linux). Whether there would have been any backwards compatibility is another matter.

Effectively Jim was going to do what Apple have done, before Apple did it (with some elements of what Microsoft is now attempting with Windows 10 - way too late). This could have taken the world by storm, OR Apple could have swept in and out-done Gateway-Amiga before it got off the ground. We will never know.

With the intervening years, "Amiga" needs some sort of big leap to get back in the game, and that leap gets bigger as time goes by. I think Jim's suggestion of cheap hardware which performs a niche function and attracts people back to "Amiga", before building on the technology is a reasonable one.
Some of his comments also echoed my Amiga OS4-based retro console suggestion, which was shot down by certain people.

Interesting interview anyway, thanks.

A great interview, really nice to hear from the guy, I really liked the original vision with QNX involved wasn't all that keen when they switched to linux, but can kinda understand why they did it. I still love the AmigaMCC case, I wish I knew what happened to that foam/mock up they made.

Funnily enough, it was up for sale on ebay last week. Not sure if it sold, it seems to have gone now.

It's on ebay at the moment and can be yours for just 1,250 US dollars.

Amiga MCC mockup - ebay auction

A suspicious person would note the timing of this ebay auction. We've heard nothing for 16 years, but it mysteriously appears at the same time that Jim Collas gives his first Amiga interview since leaving Gateway. Complete coincidence, I'm sure.

It didn't. The above auction is a re-listing.

@kamelit0

If that's your interpretation, you missed the point.

Leveraging a platform agnostic OS kernel would have made a world of difference.

How is it that the Mac community has thrived and grown by making these identical changes and yet Amiga users steadfastly deny change and face extinction?

Oh no... we can't use the x86 chip because it's capitulating to the evil empire! We can't embrace Linux and yet virtually everything new on the Amiga is a derivative of it!

The Amiga was about the experience. Not custom chips, not simply being different.

OMG, so tempted to get it, why he does not offer shipping to the UK, does that guy not know there are world wide fans of Amiga.

I know its nuts, but I loved that case! Dont know if I could really afford it, and doubt that the seller is willing to ship to UK, specially if its heavy. (I have sent a message to him hoping he consider it! plus could only really afford $1000 including shipping, think he go for it?)

I think its no surprise it surface now after all these years when Jim does an interview.

it just nice and a real surprise to see it again, I thought it might been scrapped off.

anyone know the seller?

anyone know another way of contacting him?

anyone help!!!!!

So true...

Funny the guy asks if Microsoft had anything to do with the failed attempt of Jim Collas... The Amiga didn't need anyone to screw everything... I guess that one of the big difference between Apple & Amiga is (was) the lack of a true leader able to force changes, and one and only one direction.

Much like some people only want OCS/AGA, 68k,.. I'm pretty sure there were people against OSX, the switch to x86... But it's irrelevant compared to what has been gained.

I dont know if it was that daft as a question, at the time in 1999, I remember reading stories of Microsoft bulling companies to only sell windows on there machine as they where worried about the rise of Linux back then.
