Good work A-eon / Amigakit, I got the package, the only slight issue I have is that Candi does'nt seem to play animated background on fresh boots or restarts, and a few little issues with Warp3d Nova, which I havent looked into to be fair, but other wise liking the improvements.

A-eon and Amigakit should be congratulated for keeping up the momentum with the OS4 market without them I think OS4 might be on the way out.

I'm just worried about the pace of Hyperion and the OS4 team, like many have said this kinda of update should of perhaps been OS4.2 really, but clearly resources and man power must be tight. It also seem to be taking a long for them to be finishing updates for OS4.1FE on X5000 and A1222 I am beginning to worry a bit about the future of AmigaOS4 and maybe FE (Final Edition) had more meaning to it than we all thought.

Here hoping they surprise us at the next Amiwest, but I'm not holding my breath.

Well,

What good is MorphOS, AROS, Amikit, Vampire etc compared to any mainstream OS's or hardware?

Virtually nothing.

So, why do we use the it?

Cause we enjoy it..?

Vampire will do very little to improve anything but my own personal enjoyment of the Amiga 600 I got sitting in my office/nerd dungeon.
Im still looking forward to the performance boost it will give AOS 3.x.
Then people like Britelite will say "eeeh.. why dont you just use Windows if you want better performance? I enjoy Amiga for its limitations, not bastardized versions of it!!?!"
Its a fair comment, but we all find enjoyment in different aspects of OS's and hardware.

Same goes for whatever AeonKit produces (or Individual Computers, Kipper2k etc); if I find it to enhance my enjoyment of the Amiga, Im positive to it.

Given that the platform has been dead since the mid 90s with regards to mainstream appeal, I find it laughable that people make the pace of AeonKits program development an argument against them.

Olaf; you have alot of knowledge of Amiga, and are atleast a productive person with regards to AROS for example, but you should look in the mirror before throwing rocks.
I could ridicule YOU for wasting your time with AROS. Dont get me wrong; I dont, and I hope you keep developing it as long as you find it enjoyable.
But the rocks you throw at AeonKit can be thrown at you.

And I know some people STILL have unrealistic expectations as to what can be accomplished on the Amiga platform; those are beyond help

@Overflow

it seems you did not understand me (seems to happen often unfortunately )

I did not critisize the package or prize, people can look at it and who is wanting to have it and willing to pay should buy it

I critisize the sensation-style in the announcements and making promises they cannot keep. I cited "Personal Paint" and what happened after. People should buy the package like it is if they want it but not because of high expectations regarding developments. Other than that everyone is free to waste money and time on its own.

If you are upset about the sensationalization of new Amiga software, then I present to you the standard of all future packaging of new Amiga software:

@amigakit , please feel free to use my new images at no cost :)

I see no problem with updating software here or developers being payed for their work. My problem with the current system is that the OS is now all over the place. So now you have to buy the OS plus a driver plus this disc to keep things up to date. It shouldn't matter to the user who pays the developers behind the scenes but the user should be able to buy one central OS package with everything included.

As a comparison MorphOS includes this in all one package. The user doesn't have to buy the OS in seperate modules. And then install them all to get the complete OS.

OS4.0 was complete. All drivers included. In fact OS4.1 was complete until FE came out. Since then the OS is split up. AmigaOS4 wasn't exactly perfectly clean but now it is becoming a mess.

Please pardon the off-topic question:

Has anyone figured out the difference between the two versions?

I'll probably get the "+" either way, as a show of support.

About having to "collect the parts" for an OS, it is what it is.

You can buy AmigaOS and run it "clean", no problem there.
If you want to add a high-end graphics driver, we all know
where to get it, and what it costs.

The classic Amiga experience did not charge extra for a graphics driver.
it came with a "standard" driver that could handle the ECS/AGA options well enough.

If you want to add a RadeonHD 7900 series graphics card to your classic Amiga..
Well, _I_ don't know that it's possible.

So we don't get high end radeonHD drivers for free. That's reality. We have options:
Don't use a high-end RadeonHD card.
Write a letter to ATI and demand free drivers for AmigaOS.
Write a RadeonHD driver yourself, then give it away for free to everyone!
Or pay the extremely reasonable charge to A-Eon and in doing so help to support THIRD PARTY EXPANSION of your favorite OS.

It's not Hyperions "fault". It's not A-Eons "fault". It is simply a choice.
And a choice I am damn happy to have available.

Half the time complaining about what we do NOT have, the other half complaining about what we DO have. Some people just can not be happy.

So if you want to expand your Amiga, please do!
If you don't want to expand your Amiga, feel free to go that route too.

If you're just looking to complain about something, try this:
Move to the United States right away, and join in to the ongoing discussions about who should be our next president. THERE"S a topic with lots of angst to stir up!

@m0lebrain

I like the presentation, it's very direct.
But I see a problem. If I distribute a CD with the hole that far off-center, it will probably go to shrapnel before it's done loading.

Hmm, sounds like a workable copy-protection plan..
write an installer script to slow-load the file, then speed the drive up to 56X or something. With an off-center CDROM it should make quite an impact!

With floppies gone and optical drives thinning already, we may have to go USB for physical media soon. Or just download everything and skip the hardware completely!

It sounded like a pretty honest assessment to me.

To be fair you got the drivers you paid for. Back then people thought it was enough or even good. Gfx cards was for professionals only at the time.

Also to be fair Hyperion did promise HD 3D drivers for years and they never came. On the other hand it is to A-Eons credit that they do release drivers at all, even if they cost a lot as a consequence. Because the alternative would be no drivers at all probably.

But it does change the whole "get a full OS for only 30€" thing, doesn't it?

@Yasu

What does "full OS" mean tho?

With rapidly changing hardware being available to the mainstream, what is considered standard 10 years ago, is now horribly outdated.
This post is written on my I7 wintel machine, and I would be suprised if AOS ever reached the standard my current PC got now.

Its why I never purchase on promises/expectations, but merely on the standard of what is available right here and now.

Good point. But working 3D drivers is nowadays pretty standard at least.

RadeonHD driver but it looks like an older version is included on this CD. However it's stil unclear as it talks about HD and has no mention of the AmigaOne XE type models using non-HD AGP or PCI cards.

That's the thing. I'm not talking about a HD Radeon card. In my case I'm talking about using the 9250SE on my AGP bus of my AmigaOne XE.

Since installing FE I found my VGA cable was non-DDC and OS4 refused to display anything except a boot logo. I changed the cable and thought I had it working but then found it was flaky and the black screen returned. I played around with the boot shell. Deleting the screenmode prefs. Opening up ScreenMode and making sure the monitor was set to detect settings automatically. By the end of it I am back on the black screen. No sense in the debug buffer.

In all previous versions, be that OS4.0 and OS4.1 up to Update 6 this was not a problem. But when I installed FE fresh I lost my display

On my X1000 my hardware is crippled as the OS only goes up to 1024x768 using the built in driver. But I can understand why there. I have an older 4xxx series HD card. IIRC screenmodes were fine using included Update 5 CD but would need to check.

Now, FE is obviously a budget priced version of the OS, given the price and good value considering it accumulated all updates up to that point. And can only do a fresh install. I supported all OS revisions including FE only to be rewarded with crippled screenmodes. And AFAIK loss of 3d compositing. Well no screen modes on my A1 in fact. Even FakeNative doesn't show up BootVGA disappears.

It's also unclear what extra driver I need to buy to bring my OS back to pre-FE standards. I don't know of any fix for my A1 at present.

I think there is some confusion here. Let me clatify some things:

1) All original AmigaOne X1000 customers have access to the RadeonHD v1.0 driver FREE of charge from the A-EON website and heavily discounted V2 upgrade path.

2) OS4.1 Final Edition is supplied with a special cut down RadeonHD Lite Edition so it can boot in an Emergency to an XGA screenmode- this driver is only for RadeonHD cards and of course will not R200 cards such as the 9250. Once the system is installed with the Lite driver, installing the full driver from AMIStore, A-EON website or Enhancer Software CD will restore full screenmodes.

Quote:

3) Sorry this is wrong: the Enhancer Software does is supplied with the very latest full RadeonHD v1 or v2 (depending on whether you buy Standard or Plus editions)

If you read about each version of the package, you'll see that the standard edition has v1 of radeonhd and the plus edition has v2 of radeonhd driver. In order to get full usage of this package you need a radeonhd card.
I'd go for the plus version.

That's unfortunate, was it the original card supplied with the A1 or fitted afterwards? Perhaps there's something funny about your particular model of card. Not all cards with the same GPU behave in exactly the same way, as can be seen by comparing reviews of the same GPU from different vendors. It sounds like you could simply stick with Update 6 if that was working for you, or perhaps there's a way of using the 4.1u6 drivers with FE. It's the same card as I have in my A1-XE, and not only does it work perfectly from the word go, but it even behaves better with my KVM than my Linux PC.
