News   News : MS Hotmail is spaming the spammers.
posted by paulsamiga on 15-Aug-2003 14:28:06 (2480 reads)
Another article from 100% amiga.

Microsoft plans to reduce the billion junk items that clog its Hotmail email service each day - by spamming the spammers.

It has signed up Brightmail to generate 200 million decoy addresses and post them to sites and newsgroups suspected of generating spam. Brightmail's Probe Network will analyse mail sent to the decoys to obtain a profile for filtering out the estimated eight in 10 messages that are junk.

Brightmail will update its software to keep up with spam techniques. 'We look on this fight as guerrilla warfare,' said a spokesman.

Uhhh.. thats not a good thing. My old e-mail address was being used as the "From:" field by spammers, so I would get all the "please unsubscribe me" and "mail delivery failed" messages, even though the spam was nothing at all to do with me.

This could end up sending decoy messages to thousands of innocent users.

Agreed. it's a load of old cobblers. Without actually analysing the spam and getting the perpetrator kicked off its ISP, you're going to get nowhere.

Decoy adresses are only good for detecting dictionary attacks.

Thats why they will post on various sites and forums. Then search bots will pick them up.

They propably won´t reply to the spam they get. But rather track the worst spammers down by analyzing the mail, their routes and the ip´s they get and then spam the real sender.

In new versions of windozer you will get a warning before posting your mail adress to various sites ;)

I think the spamming in the title is about spamming the email adress bot that goes round collecting email addresses, and then harvesting the information sent to to those email accounts to block the incoming spam.
For instance if the spam is found always to have penis in the subject. then emails having penis in the subject would be given a certain spam score, If the email contains several likely spam strings or identifyiers it gets over a certain spam threshold where it can be automatically binned, or just deleted.

I mean MS is dumb but not that dumb.
