News   News : Next FCUG meeting - Sunday, Dec. 18
posted by RobertB on 14-Dec-2016 9:40:05 (1982 reads)
Merry Christmas, C= and Ami aficionados!

The Fresno Commodore User Group has its next meeting from 11 a.m. to 2+ p.m., Sunday, Dec. 18 at --

Bobby Salazar's Mexican Restaurant
2839 North Blackstone Ave. (corner of Blackstone and Michigan)
Fresno, California
(559) 227-1686

For discussion, we'll talk about the 35 year history of our club and show early FCUG newsletters.

Because it's Christmas, naturally we'll look at holiday demos and games for the Commodore 64 and Plus/4. For the VIC-20, we'll try drawing Christmas pictures with Minisketch, 8K ram expander, and a Flexidraw lightpen. And because one of the VIC-20's has a R65C02 processor, we can finally try out the cartridge, MOSES: The Assembler of the Ages (which requires a 65C02). In Amiga matters, I'll bring in the AmigaOne XE G4 with OS 4.1 Final Edition and Radeon HD 4650 video card. (Hmm, what Christmasy item can I run on the A1? :) ) As usual, we'll try to get to the items that we did not cover in the November meeting.

Truly,
Robert Bernardo

P.S. If I can get 5V out of the C128, there will be a demonstration of Jason "Pyrofer's" new RGB digital-to-VGA adapter that goes directly to a multi-scan VGA monitor without the need of a scandoubler/flicker-fixer.

Hope it was a good meeting. Just noticed you have an XE with a Radeon 4650, would love to know that compare with the same machine with a Radeon 9xx0 card.

@Rob

O.K., the XE formerly had a Radeon 9700 but now has the HD 4650. What are your specific questions?

Merry Christmas,

GfxBench 2D would probably be the best place to start.

http://hdrlab.org.nz/benchmark/gfxbench2d/OS/AmigaOS/

It can automatically upload the scores to Hans' site automatically but there no search function so if you could paste the results into this thread I'd be very grateful .

Real world applications I can think of that can measure the performance are all games. Since you are limited to 2D then the best tests would be Mace, Santa's Shootout and Wings Battlefield (the compositing version should work on your 4650). Demo versions are available and they all have an fps counter so are ideal for the purposes of testing even if the games themselves don't appeal to you.

The Mace demo is available here. The frame counter is enabled from the config program. The fps counter is quite small and difficult to see when the game is playing but it can be seen clearly on the menu screen and should be sufficient for our purposes since there's a scrolling background on the menu screen.

Santa's Shootout can be download from here. the fps counter is enabled the same way as with as with MACE but can be seen quite clearly when the games is running. You need to start the game to see the FPS counter in this one.

The direct download for the compositing version of the Wings Battlefield demo is
here.
The fps counter can be enabled from the icon's tooltypes. (SHOWFPS=1) should already be in the tooltypes so just remove the brackets to enable the in game FPS counter.

Select a high resolution like 1080p for all of the games since this will stress test the system properly. If MACE and Santa's Shootout run at 60fps at this resolution you could untick the VSync button and the the frame rate will be as fast as the system can go. For example, on my X1000 R9 280 and running at the monitors max resolution of 1920x1200 the FPS counter on MACE displays between 200 and 300 fps on the menu screen depending how complex the background scrolling past is at that time. If I run it at 640x480 I get between 800 and 1400fps
