Sorry about the extended outage.

We suffered a failure in the raid subsystem on the server on Friday and it took quite some time to repair and restore.

Please let us know in this thread if you experience anything odd since there were quite a few errors on the volume and we might have lost some data along the way

Great that your back. Maybe if you used unRAID and a hot swappable server drive could be replaced in an instant with nothing to reconfigure or copy.

Tried to be back.

Then used Raid as there where some ants in our floor.

Is this worrying like Amiga or only technical problems?

Thank You Very Much and as Allways humour is included.

What is the reason, you host this website on your own?

I do not really understand... I do a lot, a lot of websites - even really big ones.

All is hosted by professional Hosting Companies. I never ever had a problem in over 10 years...

But probably, there is a good reason, why not using a professional Hosting...

I doubt such reasons really exists. Professional hosting has usually uptime 99.9x, daily automated backups and so long outage would not happened... And the price? 3 maybe 3 and half beers a month

We're running on our server for various reasons, one of them being that we don't slot into a standard setup of any hosting company because we're using a lot of very old and customised stuff that still works with ancient browsers and quite a few custom made admin tools that are a big part of the day to day operations of the site.

The other being that we also run other services, such as the IRC network, the Services part of the IRC network, Radio Broadcasting services for AmigaWorld.NET radio and so on. We don't easily fit into a simple hosting environment with that setup, so we'd have to give up some of that flexibility. We also obviously try to minimise the cost of operating the site since donations and ad revenue barely covers the operational expense as is.

Right now the server is located on a fairly slow (by modern standards at least) server CPU wise, with a non-hardware based mirrored raid. We do take the backups off-site on a regular basis but the work in restoring the server was mostly getting the team at the provider to boot the server in recovery mode and work on restoring the raid to a working setup, which required a few attempts with long waiting periods between them

Of course we could get a professional hardware based raid server with full KVM access and that would enable us to do all of this possibly even without downtime, it's just a matter of cost and who is going to pay for it.

I'd also like to point out that we do all of this work on a volunteer basis and that I have a full time day-job that I'm actually paid to do, as well as raising 2 kids under the age of two, so there are other things on my agenda than just restoring amigaworld.net to a working setup.

If we wanted to migrate to some CMS from this Century we probably could but we would lose a lot of the custom made tools that have been added over the years and the work of porting the site is significant.

If you want to volunteer to port the site and all the admin tools to a modern CMS, please feel free to contact us, the other option is offering money to have someone else do it.

If you want to do neither and feel that the service we provide to you for free isn't satisfactory, you are of course free to peruse other forums.

In terms of the DNS; yes I made a push to have that fixed since we had to work on this anyway.

Really great news! It was worth the outage to bring the fix to fruition sooner

if this is true that it runs on a3000ux then it works surprisingly well i must say. however i understand now all the blacklisting and maintenance problems as well.
