Amigaworld.net News   Amigaworld.net News : Upgrading the server operating system
   posted by sibbi on 27-May-2017 22:59:39 (1695 reads)
Hey,

The current release of Ubuntu running on amigaworld.net is EOL and we need to upgrade to a supported version.

I'm working on the upgrade as we speak, the site will become unresponsive for a while and will then hopefully return without much fuss.

The forum system Amigaworld.net runs is very antiquated so there might be issues that arise from the upgrade. If you notice something strange please reply to this thread so we can take a look and see if we can fix it.

Kind regards,
Sibbi

I guess it's somewhat implied that moving to a different, modern forum engine would be too difficult or basically not worth the effort, right?

I appreciate that this forum has kept its engine lightweight and compatible with real Amiga systems. One of the last ones and I like it. So hopefully moving isn't in mind :)

@sibbi

Seems something wrong with including of images ? I.e. check hollywood's news item about GLGalore, there was some tasty color image , which is now disappear and from front page, and when you press on "read news" as well.

EDIT: from plus side, seems those "your ip is banned" messages which appear for me 1 of 3-4 tries to login or to post , disappear at last.

Not really,

The situation is thus:

1.) There was quite a lot of add-on work done for various admin tools that are used to admin the site
2.) The Site as is, still works on very ancient browsers including ones that run on Classic Amigas, something that was once an issue, but perhaps not any more
3.) We don't have any developer currently on staff

If anyone wants to volunteer to do this that would be great but it would involve getting a new portal system up and running, coding some additions to help us manage it, and porting the current content over to it.

I could help a little, but I don't have the time to do all of this work myself.

@tlosm

We have fixed most of the code so it now runs on modern versions of PHP and MySQL.

The latest thing to break now is Xoops code that is using call-by-reference, I've fixed a few issues already but there might be more, hopefully not a lot.

@kas1e

Oddly the news item appears to be empty now. There are images in other posts so I'll strike it up to an oddity for now.
