Software News   Software News : Unreal Tournament for the Amiga ?
   posted by Eric_S on 7-Oct-2003 22:05:36 (2730 reads)
AW.org has an interesting news item on their site about the possibility to port Unreal Tournament to the AmigaOS. Nothing has been decided yet, but the idea is there.

f you didnt know. AW.org is now in good talks with Virgin and Hyperion. How it all ends, well. You will be able to find it out here.

AW.org is a magazine, and we asked for fun Virgin if there will be a Amiga version of Unreal Tournament. Yes! And we sent Virgin lots of screenshots of AmigaOS and more. Our first repply from Virgin was negative, wich also included info about the Linux version of Unreal Tournament.

Well, we at AW.org wrote back to Virgin, and told them lots about Hyperion, wich have been porting Shogo, Heretic 2, Freespace, Quake 2 and more for Amiga. Then Virgin suddendly changed their minds and said to AmigaWorld that if someone is willing to do a conversion of Unreal Tournament for Amiga (as they didnt have the resource to do it), why not...

So now its been all up to Hyperion if they have time to do a Unreal Tournament port for AmigaOS4. That should give AmigaOS4 lots of new users, and just because of the title also. Marketing is the key for Amiga!... Or?

Unfortunately I think Hyperions resources will be tied up with OS 4.0 development for a little while longer.

Half-Life modication. It's a WWII game, great fun. Many beers have been connsumed playing it, many swear words have been uttered and typed whilst playing this most addictive game.

Well, as I read it, there seems to be open communications to anyone willing to port it. But that will likely take a license fee as well. I'm hoping it does come to OS4, because only good could follow. Like porting other modern titles like UT2003 and Star Wars: Jedi Outcast, Half Life, etc.... It has to start somewhere, and UT is still a very active game. Nice place to start.

Depending on the deal that get's struck it may not be a license fee but they get a certain % per copy sold. It all really comes down to the contract negotiations, but thats what Hyperion are good at.

ValvE don't give the licence to port Half-Life... so no Counter-Strike, no Day Of Defeat, no Natual-Selection.... no to the most online played games

errr. What has Virgin got to do with it? Atari are the publishers of the UT series (Atari/Infogrames)...

Virgin Interactive don`t even exist any more...

Ironically as Vigin Interactive ceased to be, Mastertronic came back into being... (for those who don`t know, Mastertronic had problems, got bought by Virgin creating Virgin Mastertronic, which became Virgin Games which became Virgin Interactive, which basically went belly-up).

Now if someone had a letter from Atari or the developers of UT (whom I can`t remember right now...) then great, but UT2004 should be the game to port - its time to look forwards, not back.

Well, I wondered that too. As I recall the names Epic Games, Digital Extremes, Legend Entertainment, and Infogrames are the ones listed on the UT cover (actually on the cover of "Totally Unreal" which includes both games)... But I think that Epic and/or Digital Extremes are the ones you would have to negotiate with.

Not to mention developing OS4.
