Microsoft execs at last have admitted publicly, at last, that Longhorn will not ship in 2005. Does it matter?

Note: For any and all who have complained how long it has taken for AmigaOS 4.0 to arrive, should compare it to the efforts of tthe multi-billion dollar Microsoft corporation.

nope, M$ will simply sell a XP-SE.

and as usual they will not fix any of the current bugs... but will instead introduce alot more new bugs (or as M$ will say... 'features').

No OS release went by without hickups.

As long as OS4 is out before Longhorn I´m satisfied.

longhorn's are a american type of cattle that has got long horns (DOOH... ) (I think they are the one's used at rodeo's etc.)

as for Windows... it means a project that is getting long in the teeth or a project that has got teething problems... (ask your
wife/sambo/girlfriend about the last one... if you have babies you already know )

Edit: Forget it. I remembered wrong.

Anyway, it's now moved from early 2004 to early 2005 to sometime during 2005 to probably 2006. Keep it up and we'll have a new contender for the vapourware list

Using "voltage" instead of "potential", which leads to inventing new words like "amperage" instead of "current" (I, measured in A) or possible "charge" (amperehours, Ah or Coulomb, C). Sometimes I don't even know what people mean.

It's no surprise really, look how long it took for NT5 (Win2000) to come out. XP was only a minor upgrade really (NT5.1)

In some ways I think it's better for there to be gaps between major OS releases of about 3 years or so.

Looking at the other extreme, Apple will launch MacOS 10.3 soon, charging £99 to upgrade. 10.2 is only a bit over a year old, what I'm worried about is 10.2 not being supported anymore by Apple, and being unable to get new software for 10.2

maybe shorthorn will come instead?

beyond that..it seems even M$ still has bigger problems than anyone else to make an os..., LONG staff , LONG costs , LONG delays ..

now if they only switched to asia....it would have been short :P

anyway i think no one really likes the idea and concept of longhorn anyway, it would make sense for developers and such ofcourse..but not for the market , pc is based atm on piracy and longhorn is aimed at 0% piracy...
so ofcourse i like it alot as it will be the doom of pc but then again...they will probably make an short horn version which makes your terminal into an computer anyway.....OR ?

When you consider the fact that OS4 development has had to include removal of all Amiga chipset dependancies and a complete jump of processor base with the requirement for backwards compatability with the OLD systems (only under emulation, granted) plus a decent upgrade of the OS itself it kind of puts things into perspective doesn't it.

Longhorn may be a substantial update, I don't really know, but I don't think it's as substantial an update as our AmigaOS is getting and they have a full complement of full time Engineers working for them - so really we haven't had to wait that long have we? If we judge ours against theirs, I mean.

That said, our update is way way overdue by about a decade so I suppose our lack of patience is warranted ;) Hey, maybe OS5 will be out before Longhorn is? That would be interesting hehehe

Talking of OS5, it is supposed to be an 64 bit OS as well if I remember correctly, and making the assumption OS4 will be out by january 2004, that give a couple of years to advance the Amiga to 64 bit processors and OS5.
This is good news as it will allow amiga to ride the leading edge of the 64 bit wave which is really only starting to build with the 970 and the AMD offering.
Those two years will also allow alot of time for apps to be ported/written.
In other words, it allows a good chunk of time to allow the Amiga to catch up in both hardware and software arenas to become a fully viable competitor

My girlfiend is rationing me down to once a week, so I'm get the horn longer. Is that what Longhorn means?

MS convinced loads of business to pay more for their new licencing and get free upgrades for 3 years, then decide not to bother with an upgrade for 4 years. classic.
