Ok, im warning you, take what i say with a grain of salt!

This is stupid! Stupid STUPID!

EA are never going to do this. And lets say that for some stupid reason they wanted to get back into the Amiga Market, do you think it would be with DPaint? And do you think we would want them to do it with DPaint?

Sorry, but it seems like a silly idea. If the petition was to "Release the source code as open source for DPaint" then i'd sign it and be "all for it". But to try and get THEM to port an old application with no market is insane.

I dont mean to be rude, but i can tell why anyone would think why they would port it. They're not going to.

Why would we want them to port it when, in the forum, bloodline showed us a screen shot of UberPaint under AROS and its open source. The whole conversation about the petition should have stop there! We have an open source DPaint program! Isnt that enough?

Sorry for my yelling and stuff... it just seems silly... Ohh and i've had a few now :)

Use PPaint, support Cloanto, EA jumped ship as soon as they could, Cloanto still supports Amiga Software.

Make the good Choice, choose the more advanced program, choose PPaint.

Maybe someone should petition Cloanto to release PPaint for OS4, then at least we'll have more chance of results.

I agree, DPaint is the wrong software to ask for a port of.

I'd rather see some modern, portable software updated with some of DPaint's features...

I mention what I like in the forum thread http://amigaworld.net/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=2064&forum=14

There's one thing you're all overlooking here - it's not totally about DPaint. Huh? Let me explain ...

This petition gets going for DPaint, but at the same time it's going to show EA that the Amiga scene is on it's way back, and people are interested in THEIR products - no matter how old.

So even if we don't get DPaint, the chances are that they will atleast take a look at what is happening with Amiga again, which could in turn bring in some new software in the future

I didn't start this petition, I just found a link on Amiga.com and reported it (Well, I think it was os.amiga.com).

Hold on a minute, folks.

I've made a part of my living with DPaint for 12 years now. I've spent tons of time starting with version 2. I've even played with #1 for fun.

I regularly use versions 4.1 & 5 professionally. With the HAM requesters & retargetability issues cleared up, the 24bit mode would rock for certain things.

I own and use PPaint. I even bought and registered the Suite in the silly metal can. I do not use it nearly asmuch as DPaint. Like all software, each does some things better than the others. Neither one is ImageFX, or even Photoshop. They never claimed to be.

Today I made some signs & banners here at work. No one beats DPaint at handling Colorfonts. And, I've yet to find a gradient fill system as fast and flexable.

I still find new uses for featrues in DPaint. Today I used the 'merge in front' option to turn some black & white clip art into attractive gradient enhanced pictures. I don't remember ever using that function before.

Even if EA would not be interested in developing their old Deluxe line again, maybe we could get them to release that code. It sure can't hurt to ask.

DPAint isn't really dead, just under appreciated.

I'm amazed at the number of signatures there now... it's up to 284. Not alot in the greater scheme of things, but concidering I just signed yesterday sometime and I was #16, it really has caught on...

Oh yeah, and as someone else mentioned already, this could also prompt EA to at least look at the fact that OS4 is appearing for new (modern) hardware....it could also inspire them to "test" the market with a single product to see how it sells... You never know... I remember the old original EA who were very ambitious and saw the potential of the Amiga, and committed to it long before any other companies did....

That's exactly what I was thinking. EA is beyond applications and they know that there is no money to be made in consumer desktop applications.

Asking them to open source it now that would be smart. That way someone could make both a blue and red versions.

The "Amiga scene" as you put it, wont be back for at least 5+ years! Look at Apple for example, they're market share has hardly increased and their OS has been hailed as the best OS ever produced.

Lets see how their G5s are going, but seriously, the only way the Amiga is going to survive in the next 5 years or so is on the back of geeks, such as our selfs!

In the same way that Australia used to ride on the sheeps back, as many would have told you thats how it was. The Amiga now rides on the geeks back!

[EDIT]

Also, if you want a cool art related package, one of which there should be a market for, one of which is still be developed today, one of which got its start on the Amiga and till this day runs on multiple OSes, why not try and get the latest release of Cinema4D ported to OS4?

I found this cool history type thing on Cinema4D

I got both DPaint and PPaint. I still prefer DPaint way of doing things.

Amiga version DPaint should be ported to AOS4 (by someone else than EA or made open source perhaps).

OK, I just signed the petition as well as I guess there's no harm in trying.

To see that over 300 have signed the petition already is IMO pretty impressive.

Yeah this would be great, as I am hoping for a proper AmigaOS4 replacement for Adobe Photoshop.

Photogenics is at the top of my list though.

At least the community isn't asking for it for free (which would be the case if they asked for it to go open source) This way it may carry a greater impact than if they were. In other words people are more or less saying that they would be willing to pay for a new version.

I'm sure that EA (if they aren't interested in developing it further) could figure out that it might generate some goodwill for the company if they release it as open source.

Imhoh I think it's better to let them figure that out for themselves. Give them greater satisfaction!

As I said in another thread DPaint would kickass as a std paint package on the amiga compared to another famous os!

Considering Cloanto organised the Italian OS4 on tour show in July (and I'm still sick as mud that I couldn't go to it because mine was on the same day), I wouldn't worry too much about Cloanto supporting OS4

I know Elwood has set up an association to help developpers creating or porting apps to OS4, and I'm sure I'm not the only dealer with plans to help creators distribute their products once they start flooding in.

And of course, nothing prevents you getting an Earlybird system (OS4 beta available really, really , soon now I'm promised ) and starting on that C code now, ready to compile on the A1 itself

I've just signed up as #516.

I'm dubious it'll make EA consider a port, but worth a shot and in the worst case it'll bring the Amiga back to EA's attention. Open sourcing would be the more likely option to succeed, IMHO.

On a related matter, when you buy software for any platform, take a look at registration card under the options for the "What computer/console do you own?" question - there's usually an Other box. Guess what I fill in there? Likewise for magazine and consumer surveys.
