Good for Thomas.

It is hard to remember that your goal was to drain the swamp
when you're up to your arse in alligators.

@Thread,

I am not sure I understand all of the comments being made here and on the actual Natami Forum site.

What really puzzles me is the name change? Why change the name, unless there is some pressure from somewhere to give up the name. Or if the Natami name no longer matches the original intention of Thomas, and/or was not his original choice, but instead was a team decision and Thomas is retreating from the team to do his own thing.

This is sad news if it means that the Natami project is going to be substantially delayed, or possibly even canceled.

As the OS4.x, MorphOS, and AROS efforts seem to continue to drift further away from the original Commodore Amiga designs, either out of necessity of hardware choices, or desire to include more modern features, I had hoped that the Natami would succeed and be available for production and purchase within the next year, or 18 months. Personally, I have little to zero interest in OS4.x, MorphOS3.x, or AROS on x86, or ARM hardware, and would just as soon move backward toward the Natami on a variant of the Motorola 680x0 hardware, instead of moving my Amiga like experience to x86. I already have AmigaForever, AmiKit, and WinUAE for that and if I want more on x86, I would choose AROS/AEROS, or Icaros.

To me, the Natami is the closest project to what I consider a "Real Successor" to the original Amiga computers and I had high hopes for it to begin production.

I hope that these latest announcements are not the end of the Natami, or what ever it will be called in the future.

I hope the confusion will be cleared up and Thomas and the rest of the Natami development team will not grow apart with this recent announcement by Thomas wanting seclusion.

It does not sound promising.

edit: strange only that the project author has now to seclude from the group that has gathered around him and even give up his original project name, even though he is the one who did the actual work.

To my understanding there was one developer (Thomas) and dozen managers pushing poor guy.

However, it is none of our business to question Thomas' motives.

I think that this is the usual story of announcing something while working on it and the frenzy kills the project. No blame on Natami team, just this is how it always happens.

I believe the best thing is to give Thomas some space to do his thing and when he is ready he can come back and share it, I wish him well and I know the results will be cool.

To be honest I've not been keeping many tabs on the NatAmi progress. It's been more of a sort of "I'll pay attention when there's something to pay attention to" kind of thing.....

I can't say I'm surprised though. It seemed as an outsider, that it started off as an Amiga clone in an FPGA, with some bells and whistles. Then over time the feature-creep set in and before you know people are throwing numbers and features around and claiming it's going to beat the AmigaOne X1000 and have everything including the kitchen sink, and yet nothing was ever shown.

I think Thomas did the right thing - get back to roots. Worry about walking before running, get something done and out there so people can get involved and interested. It always seemed like it was trying do NatAmi version 10.0 before version 1.0.

But then like I say, I've not really been watching it. Just saying from an outsider's point of view, that's all.

Kudos to Thomas for doing this.

Its all in begining was too ambitios for hobby project which started from scratch. Just take a look at aos4, morphos or aros = everything going by the same route in time line, problems with resources, problems with raw power (exept aros here), and so on. And even (if ever) natami will be out in some form, there will be no software, not programms, the same "goals and plans" which will never materialized just because its hobby projects, and not enough human resources. Just take a look how much time it take for all NG , and where they are. And imagine what can do one man, with help of some others, and bunch of fanboys who belive in second coming still.

As for me, everything was very very expected from the begining of all those superaga introducing and anything new, who no one will programm ever from 3d party devs today.

@Spirantho

"it's going to beat the AmigaOne X1000"

That were speculations outside, it was never intended to beat X1000 (or any PPC or X86 equipped system). It was targetting to be the fastest 68k computer available with some new features like better sound (16bit), CHUNKY pixel, 24bit and a faster chipset (compared to AGA) and better hardware (Network, USB...). Some of this was reality already, others not. CHUNKY pixel (and as far as I know 24bit) f.e. not, as far as I know they were testing and working on AGA modes (256 colors). Perhaps expectations were too far already.

I do not comment it further, it is now official that it is the work of one person who will decide the faith of the project. On a commercial scale there will be certainly no special developed games or applications for it because it will be certainly no interesting market (not big enough) for software companies or developers (at least when they are thinking commercial).

2 good things came out of this: AROS 68k development was updated and the Apollo core will be available commercially for anyone.

I think that's a large part of the problem NatAmi had from the beginning to be honest.

Feature creep, I know a thing or two about that....when I was making the 1541U case I asked what people wanted to see in it...ouch!

I love the Natami, I really hope they can finish it...

Never ask the question...

They want of course everything and of course cheap and immediately...

"they" is not precise, i would say "he". Thomas does most of the work (SAGA...). The only exception is that some were working 68050 core and some were working at drivers. But I do not know if the work there has stoppped or not.

Who is it that's licensing that Apollo core now?

You might want to ask matthey on a.org. He's been posting about it.

I read this from matthey there. Just wondering if it's accurate:

Quote:
Gunnar has talked about releasing the Apollo core source to specific customers under a strict license (and for a hefty fee).

@jorkany

No idea.

After all "has talked about" is a pretty common amigoid phrase. heh.

Is that even allowed? Wouldn`t Motorola have something to say about it?
