Nice read. AmigaOne with 4 e5500 cores, that sounds too good to be true.

Once that process is complete an additional batch of boards will be manufactured for a reduced beta test programme, which all being well will commence towards the end of this year. The first Cyrus prototype board was completed at the end of last year

The Cyrus Plus board will also accept the new P5040 when it becomes commercially available in greater volume.

Does this mean it will be socketed so you can remove the "old" cpu and upgrade from a P5020 to P5040
when that time comes?

Good read as usual!

No it doesnt- unless you have a BGA rework station, suitably skilled and wish to void the warranty.

It's unlikely. The length of the conductor to each CPU pin inside a socket makes it impossible to clock the CPU at any great speed. The CPU is almost certain to be soldered directly to the board, it's the only way to get its maximum speed.

given that the current high speed x86 cpus are usually socketed i dont think this is a problem but rhather the lack of available sockets.

I suppose that if the difference regarding pricing between 2 cores and quad cores machines is the price of the most expensive cpu minus the least one then it doesn't matter.
Except if they're not released at the same time and you can't wait.

As I read about the Cyrus project with a certain numbness I pondered the problem of time and the unique concept of "Amiga years". I was struck by the realization that while Amiga development has been going on I've gotten old. I may not live to see OS4.2. However, I've decided to add instructions in my will that my Amiga's are to go to the Amiga community. Due the time-warping aspect of Amiga development, whenever the sad day occurs, it is assured that my Amiga's will remain cutting-edge Amiga technology.

please reconsider or consult a lawyer to determine "amiga community" more closely. your action could cause another serious disagreement or provoke another scam scheme leading to further damages. this, while i hope your intention in not any intentional "scorched earth" strategy. ;D

It's refreshing and pleasant to see such openness about the development process. Worth noting the caveat "if all goes well", before anyone starts stocking up on flaming torches for January.

@amigakit

And also wish to pay 'unit quantity' prices for a P5040.

OT:
I noticed recently that infra-red BGA rework stations are now down to under £100 - sigh. I miss the simplicity of DIL chips with 1.27mm pitch spacing, components big enough to have their values printed/coded on the packaging, and resistors you could anchor a boat with.

Frankly I was stunned to find people still using Amiga in ~2002 when I got back into it (after discovering Ebay, and my childhood dreams available for a pittance ). The fact that there are new developments at all is no minor miracle, let alone someone like Trevor willing to fund hardware development.

PS - It's more than half my lifetime ago since I sold my original Amiga (A500) to pay the deposit on my first flat (1993).

It would be nice to upgrade above 1ghz. Does cyrus have 10gbit ethernet? Is audio going to be delivered via xena? Cyrus seems to have two serial ports at the rear... unless they are atari ports...?

There are both 1Ge and 10Ge on the SoC, which they've used on the board we'll have to wait to find out.

On the X1000 they chose 1 x 1Ge + 3 PCI-e rather than 1 x 10Ge. The p5020 has less SedDes lanes but they are 5G instead of 2.5G, so things may be different.

There is no on board sound on the Cyrus - as there is no southbridge. You'll need to plug a card in.

It looks like those are serial ports on the back, and each seems to have a RS232 converter chip , so they may have hardware handshaking.

We should have a better idea after Amiwest!

Regards
Darren

Serial port enables one to use legacy RS232 stuff and that's a very good thing.

"There is no on board sound on the Cyrus - as there is no southbridge. You'll need to plug a card in."

xena can do the audio (it could use one thread per audio lane, some threads to calculate 3D audio parameters etc etc...) I'm pretty sure that certain xcore/audio wizard could do the SW for that ... if time/money permits. Extra HW could come onbord with rev3 board or as a card for xorro.

About x2000 ... I might be able to pay 1500eur for a prebuilt 2..2,4Ghz dualcore system. Otherwise I need to find cheaper upgrade for my SAM440.

UPDATE:...
x2000 might have another xcore, because it could be that 2 core xcore chip (500MHz XMOS XS1-L2 124) might not be available any more. So, it might have 4core chip as minimum...

Hey man, don`t be that negative unless you are really seriously ill, in which case I am really sad
to hear such things.

Does it really have a full serial port?

That will be just great, that way I wouldn't have to boot into Linux
just to play around with my hardware experiments,,, which is what I
do most of time now. Of course the next phase(?) will involve also a
parallel port and............. well we'll see.

Not too sure about xena/xorro. Right now all communication with xena
must be synchronus. Again, maybe the new board will solve some of that.

I can understand having a serial port for debug on the prototypes at least (motherboard header would be cheaper though) but couldn't you use USB>serial adapter for hardware experiments (ie once the OS is loaded)?

Already tried that. Problem is that one of the serial ports is being used in a non-standard way and usb keeps dropping out. I imagine I
may have the same problem with the way I'm thinking about using
a parallel port.

AND...I don't want all those cords everywhere. Hard ports are best.
