I can't speak much for Dot4 myself. What printers use it? What features can it give us?

It gives the feature of enabling the computer to talk to the printer, without which you can't even attempt to print anything.

The treshold value has no effect on how dark colors are printed... To my understanding, threshold is only for b/w printing ? However I was not able to do a coloradjustement at all with included Workbench Postscript Printerdriver.

@terminills

Great stuff! I'll test it out on my HP1012 (Dot4) this afternoon on my net book running AspireOS

Thanks

I was thinking of the HP driver when I asked this as that uses the value to determine how dark the printout should be.

Threshold may be intended for B&W printouts but each driver can use it for it's own purpose.

Well that's strange. The reason I brought it up is that I set my driver to PS and could adjust it!

I opened Printer Prefs. In Printer Type tab I set driver to PostScript. I went to Settings tab and could slide the Threashold as I saw fit.

@ terminills

just tested on my AspireOS powered netbook and got no errors and one page printed out fine (aros logo at bottom of page) from my HP LaserJet 1012 (DOT 4) printer via USB !

Great work as I was never able to properly print (text & gtaphics) from this printer via USB from either AspireOS or AmigaOS4.x till now

@terminills

How do I know if my printer is a DOT4 printer?

Drat, don't see the HP Deskjet 2210 on the list. HP is no help whatsoever in helping me to determine exactly how that particular printer communicates...you'd think their specs would help, but no.

@scabit

most probably its a "USB printer class" device. It uses PCL3GUI command language. Those devices are AFAIK all usb printer devices, not DOT4. The DOT4 ones use other printer languages like LIDIL, PCL3 (not PCL3GUI) or are GDI-like printers (mostly. I just know of lots of such devices, but there is no PCL3GUI driven printer that I know of that is using DOT4 printer communication protocol).

Another information source is hplip linux printing library. If a device is listet with "DJgeneric..." its not DOT4.

Just plug it to your OS4 machine. If printer class is shown in USBInspector, its not DOT4.
